The Perfect Blend: History, Whisky and Chocolate – Scotch Whisky News

The Perfect Blend- Whisky Tasting at The Real Mary King's Close 2

The Perfect Blend: History, Whisky and Chocolate

May is Whisky Month and to celebrate, The Real Mary King’s Close will be launching The Perfect Blend a brand new whisky tasting experience in partnership with Royal Mile Whiskies, multiple winner of Whisky Magazine’s Retailer of the Year award.

The Perfect Blend is a unique whisky tasting experience in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Combining Scotland’s most iconic exports, history and whisky, this tour will take guests back in time as they uncover Edinburgh’s incredible hidden history whilst getting to grips with the national drink.

Guests will enjoy five drams of whisky: a grain, a blend, a malt, a sherry cask matured and a peaty whisky. Each one has been specially selected to highlight the diverse nature of Scottish whisky. The tour, as well as taking guests on a journey through history, will provide an insight into the varieties of whisky available in Scotland; why they are different and how the flavours have been shaped by the methods involved in their production. As guests savour a peaty dram, they may find themselves transported to the west coast of Scotland or they may find themselves doing the work of a noser as they try to work out the different components of a blend.

Each nip of whisky will be accompanied by a sample of award winning organic craft chocolate from local suppliers, Chocolate Tree. Guests will be able to taste how this combination of flavours works together to enhance the subtle nuances of each specially selected whisky. From Madagascan Sambirano 72% dark chocolate to sea salt and caramel, each craft chocolate has been chosen to bring out the individuality of the whiskies. As the chocolate and the whisky combine, guests will be able to experience the flavours transform on their palate.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to work with local businesses to create a truly unique and Scottish event for Whisky Month.” Comments General Manager Craig Miller “It will be a chance for those who have visited the attraction before to come back and experience the Close in a different way and it will also be a great event for those visiting the capital to tick off some of the must-do experiences when in Scotland: taste whisky and discover fascinating history.”

The Perfect Blend will run throughout the month of May and tickets are now on sale. Advance booking is recommended and tickets can be purchased online at www.realmarykingsclose.com/, by phone on 0131 225 0672 or in person at The Real Mary King’s Close.

The Real Mary King’s Close is operated by Continuum Attractions. Continuum Attractions offers a host of cultural visitor attraction experiences across the UK, from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to the story of chocolate at York’s Chocolate Story.

The Real Mary King’s Close

Hidden beneath the Royal Mile, lies one of Edinburgh’s deepest secrets – The Real Mary King’s Close. This warren of hidden ‘closes’ or narrow streets where real people lived, worked and died, lay forgotten and covered by the City Chambers on the Royal Mile for centuries, until in 2003 it opened as a fascinating new visitor attraction for Edinburgh.

Operated by Continuum Attractions, this VisitScotland five-star attraction allows visitors to step back in time and be guided through these famous underground closes to witness some of the most dramatic episodes from Edinburgh’s incredible past.

Chocolate Tree

Chocolate Tree is Edinburgh’s only bean to bar chocolate maker, working in small batches using superior natural ingredients, ethically sourced and organic. Chocolate Tree aims to deliver fine flavour chocolate whilst at the same time offering impoverished farmers better profits and preserving biodiversity.

A variety of Chocolate Tree bars are available in the shop at The Real Mary King’s Close.

Spirit of Toronto 2016: Only 1 More Sleep! – Exciting Whisky News

AA SofT1

Check your calendars—only 2 more sleeps to go until this year’s Spirit of Toronto, and tickets are almost sold out so see you on Saturday or see you in 2017!

This year’s show will be boasting an incredible selection of both whisky and fine spirits – we’re excited for guests to discover Wm Grant & Sons Rare Cask Reserves with the Storas 21 Year Old; a taste of Brooklyn in Toronto courtesy of the Van Brunt Stillhouse; and lesser known Scottish distilleries such as Aultmore, Benromach, Macduff, Royal Brackla, Tomatin, Old Pulteney and Ben Nevis.

AA SofT1

Those of you who have yet to visit Scotland will come close courtesy of The Balvenie, who will be bringing their floor maltings to this year’s show, and Glenfiddich, who will be offering guests a virtual tour. And Instagrammers will not want to miss a chance to get up close and personal with one of only three bottles of Bowmore 50 Year Old in Canada.

Attending the Kentucky Derby Social with Matt Jones? You’re one of the lucky ones that will be going home with a commemorative silver julep cup — #whiskyswag!

AA SofT2

Introducing Distilled…

This year’s Spirit of Toronto marks the launch of ‘Distilled’, a magazine dedicated to exploring the craft and culture of fine spirits. Copies will be available to all guests at the end of the night and we are excited to have on hand some of inaugural contributors including Wayne Curtis, Douglas Ford and Angus MacRaild.

Please do stop by the Distilled pavilion for a first peak at the pages of our new publication, as well as a taste of some of the spirits featured in our premiere issue. Rhum agricole, armagnac, cognac, distillato di birra, shochu and a selection from Scotland’s most underrated distillery, and one of its newest — a new world of taste awaits and we look forward to sharing some of our finds with our esteemed guests at this year’s show.

Some last minute reminders…

A few things to note, particularly if you’re joining us for the first time:

  • The weather will be nice and the terrace will be open so please feel free to take your samples outside by the pool, keeping in mind that it is now entirely smoke-free.
  • Seating in the 7pm and 8:30pm masterclasses are only reserved until 5 minutes before the start of class, so please do not be late! Any empty seats will be assigned to patrons on a stand-by basis, so please check with the usher in the South Lobby if you don’t have a reservation and are interested in attending a class.
  • Blender’s Malt Whisky Glasses: these will be for sale at the show, $10 apiece or a box of 6 glasses for $50 (cash sales only)

Please don’t lose your glass! It’s yours to keep and replacements must be purchased (see above).

WORLDWIDE May Releases ;

Please see below for the worldwide releases that are due out in May ;

Longrow 18 y/o

First up, is the annual release of Longrow 18 y/o.  This 2016 bottling differentiates from previous years where 100% Sherry casks have been used for maturing this classic Longrow.  This year 60% Rum & 40% Refill Sherry casks have been used.  Here are the tasting notes for this years release ;

Nose:  Spicy; cinnamon & ginger. Apple cider spirit reminiscent of Calvados; pastry and pear drops.

Palate:  Very buttery. The ginger is there as the nose suggests developing into marzipan & coconut notes. A thick sweetness of sugar cane molasses and juicy apples.

Finish:  More peat coming through in this years bottling. Spicy with hints of nutmeg and burnt embers.

Springbank Burgundy

Secondly, is the beautiful Springbank Burgundy Aged 12 Years and this will be bottled at cask strength 53.5%vol.  Matured in Fresh Burgundy Casks and will yield 10,260 bottles for general release worldwide.

Nose:  Bold and rich with mineral and dunnage warehouse notes combining with maple syrup, pancetta, cranberry and red currants.

Palate:  A soft velvet like texture with buttered brown toast and chocolate shortbread complimenting light herb & oak notes.

Finish:  A medium dry finish gives up liquorice and mint accompanied woody tannins.

*Your 10% Society discount applies only to Longrow 18 y/o and the Springbank Burgundy will retail at £60.00 from our Cadenhead’s Shops with no discount applicable.

THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY LAUNCHES SERIES OF GLOBAL EVENTS THIS WORLD WHISKY DAY – Scotch Whisky News

FlavourBehaviour_Banner_NOText[1]

THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY LAUNCHES SERIES OF GLOBAL EVENTS THIS WORLD WHISKY DAY

Volunteers to take personality test and sample rare whiskies for secretive ‘Project Flavour Behaviour’ experiment

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is launching its Project Flavour Behaviour events across the world this World Whisky Day, Saturday May 21st 2016. The Society is looking for volunteers to take a written personality test and taste whisky samples, all in the name of science.

Project Flavour Behaviour is being carried out by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in partnership with Dr. Adam Moore from the University of Edinburgh’s Psychology Department.

There will be a series of secretive research experiments held around the world. These events will be taking place in cities worldwide, including Washington D.C., Vancouver, London and Edinburgh.

Participants at the events, which are free, will take a written personality test and then taste several special samples of single malt whisky.

A previous knowledge of whisky is NOT required – an open mind and adventurous spirit is all you need.

The findings from the events will be analysed by Dr. Moore and fed into the ongoing Flavour Behaviour experiment, which will be unveiled in more detail later in 2016.

To sign up to be a volunteer taster, visit: https://www.smws.com/projectfb
