Cadenhead’s London “Small Batch June 2016 Release” – Scotch Whisky News

MEET THE MAKER EVENT

We have a special meet the maker event in London on July 6th 3-6PM when you lucky people can come in and try a dram or two of Paul John. It’s an open house event in the main area of the store so come along anytime between 3PM & 6PM. I can tell you this is a real eyeopener of a tasting that will open minds and hearts to some amazing drams and even better you get to meet the man behind the dram.

HAPPY DAYS – AFTER THE MADNESS

Is it all over? Have they stopped all the talking shouting and spin over the referendum?! If the answer is yes then I think we all need a dram to take the edge off the most damaging period in our history for some decades now!

This is the start of a big summer with new single malts and single grains coming from Cadenhead’s Small Batch range.

Our main focus for this season’s first major release is all about smooth rich single malts with some truly amazing single grains that will blow you away for the smoothness and complexity they deliver across the palate.

So with-out further delay lets get to the big news and a bit of a distillery focus for a few of the new range. I think I am tempted to start off with a rather impressive 11 year old.

AA Cadenhead2

Dailuaine 11 year old 46% Vol Sherry Cask June 2016.

Dailuaine 11 year old 46% Vol Sherry Cask June 2016. This distillery has been a firm favourite with our London Store, This great value dram will prove why it’s one of our top malts.

Dailuaine distillery established in 1852 by William Mackenzie after William passed 1865 his widow leased the distillery to a banker from Aberlour Mr James Fleming. In 1879 Williams son joins forces with Mr Fleming to form Mackenzie & Company with Mr Fleming. After a huge rebuilding of the distillery takes place in 1884 Dailuaine became one of the largest and highly productive distilleries in the Highland’s (Speyside) region. This distillery was also the first to install the now famous Pagoda roof shape in 1889.

The distillery has operated constantly since it was established apart from a fire in 1917, damage was extensive leading to a 3 year closure until it reopened in 1920. Its capacity is over 3.3 million litres. This 11 year old sherry cask is a stunning dram so full of rich flavours it’s going to be hard to put it down. I would caution self restraint as this is an incredibly limited vintage small batch release.

AA Cadenhead3

Now lets look at Glendullan (Speyside)

I am a huge fan of this distillery, our new 19 year old is going to be a fast mover so sit back and enjoy if you manage to grab a bottle.

The distillery established in 1897 had the honour of being the favourite dram of Edward VII. Normally when this 24 June 2016 happens distilleries would normally add the word ROYAL to the brand name Glendullan obviously avoided this path of rebranding.

If you come across the distillery while in the Dufftown area you might be forgiven for thinking it’s a more recent distillery with it’s 1960s look after it was rebuilt back then it seems the idea of keeping its original look was not an option! While the distillery looks somewhat blockish and some say austere the malt it produces is outstanding.

This new 19 year old small batch is delivering across the palate, rich rounded and in my book anyway superb. For more detail notes we have made in London see the web shop.

ABERLOUR 25 1990 This is a rich dram that’s going to be a huge hit in London for sure.

AUCHENTOSHAN 17 1999 A delightful smooth dram with the most elegant taste profile you would ever want from a lowland dram.

BLAIR ATHOL 23 1997 Step back in time to better days with this dram that’s delivering across the palate, another top malt in London no doubt about it.

CREATIONS 23 1992 BATCH 2 Summer in a bottle that goes on and on with rich smooth complexity.

CALEDONIAN 28 1987 RARE SINGLE CASK GRAIN If you like the rare and unusual then this is for you. Its a summer time dream with popcorn and vanilla, creamy chocolate notes, all the aromas of a school tuck shop full of sweets. AMAZING dram that i am more than happy to recommend.

DAILUAINE 11 2004 46% Sherry bomb that explodes with richness from the nose to the finish very limited availability

GLENDULLAN 19 1996 A sit back and relax dram thats rich and mouth coating. Some drams just have to be in a collection.

GLEN GRANT 23 1992 Old style Glen Grant that’s going into my top malts of the month. You guys don’t have to buy this because I will given the chance! It’s delivering old style richness and fruit notes with hints of spice and apple.

GLEN SPEY 14 2001 46% A vanilla and cream dram that will be perfect for those who want a rare dram at a good price for a more thoughtful gift idea. The palate is rich smooth and long well worth having on a warm summer Sunday after dinner.

NORTH BRITISH 31 1985 A single grain that seems to think its a malt! Delicious rich and elegant with creamy marshmallows to tropical fruits across the whole palate. This dram proves age does matter when we seek a more elegant dram.

SPEYSIDE 24 1991 Another great dram from one of my personal favourite distilleries thats constantly delivering on taste and quality. This dram is a bigger one than the last Authentic collection with fruity notes on the nose along with salted butter, the palate has apples and caramel liquor notes with the finish toffee and cherry.

So that’s it for this week as we settle down with this collection expect news of more vintages to arrive soon. If you are use to the web shop check the news section over the next few weeks as we release some truly limited editions onto the site, I could send endless newsletters to clog up in-boxes but that will bore you all as much as an MP prattling on about what they have not planned following the referendum!

Some of the lines will be as few as 6 bottles so be quick if you see it arrive on the web shop they are all one time only drams.

I will send a new newsletter for the new ranges from Springbank and the new Authentic collection due out soon and of course the big one of the season Kilkerran 12 year old with a special event planned across the company.

So finally what has changed since June 23rd? At the moment very little apart from the arrangements we had set in place to ship internationally sadly we will now have to start all over again as i am sure you will understand any contracts set in place and prices need to enable us to continue beyond the removal of the UK from the E.U

For our E.U customers and friends you can still buy more than 1 bottle per order no limits are in place if this changes in the future we will let you know.

All bottles purchased and on hold in our holding room are not effected and we have no intention of removing those now rare bottles from your collections we will honour all our customers purchases.

It’s been a very difficult time since the shock result last week, we understand concerns from our customers who have contacted us over the last few days but please be assured we have planned as far ahead as we possibly can and as of now NOTHING has changed in anyway.

So until the next newsletter Keep your head high and carry on!

The Glenrothes & Kansas Smitty’s Ask “Which Whisky Sounds Best?” – Scotch Whisky News

KansasSmittys

Which whisky sounds best?

This July, Kansas Smitty’s will play host to an unusual whisky experiment from renowned whisky brand, The Glenrothes, where the question ‘Which whisky sounds best?’ will be answered in a unique tasting and listening experience.

As part of this interesting residency, every Wednesday in July will see a relaxed evening of whisky tasting accompanied by specially selected jazz music played on vinyl. Guests will receive a welcome The Glenrothes julep, followed by the opportunity to taste three whiskies from the award-winning The Glenrothes Speyside distillery. Each dram will be paired with music specially chosen by Giacomo Smith, one of the Kansas Smitty’s house band’s eight founding members. The aim of the tastings is to measure the effect music has on the way people taste whisky.

Amanda Baxter, from Berry Bros & Rudd, brand owners of The Glenrothes commented “the idea was born from the two team’s mutual passions for fine whisky and jazz; we are trying to create a unique tasting and listening experience that is both instructive and also a lot of fun. We think it’s the best way to learn and share a dram!”

In previous studies, relating to wine and other spirits, pitch, tempo and melody have all demonstrated notable effects on our perception of flavour. Assisting with the research is Bjorn Thorleifsson, who is currently studying a MA in Consumer Behaviour at Goldsmiths University, focusing on how music and sound affect consumption. After completing the month of tastings, results will be compiled and studied for correlation.

Kansas Smitty’s has become renowned for bringing its signature combination of jazz and juleps to their intimate bar on Broadway market, Hackney. Thanks to regular appearances on the jazz circuit, swing octet Kansas Smitty’s opened the bar last year, inviting in new talent and established acts alike. From May 2016, Kansas Smitty’s have been partnering up with a collection of exciting drinks brands for a series of monthly julep collaborations.

The Glenrothes distillery, founded in 1879, is located in the town of Rothes in Speyside – Scotland’s whisky heartland. Their vintage single malt is slowly distilled in tall copper pot stills and casked in oak until peak maturity, character and flavour has been reached. The Glenrothes distillery team then carefully marry selected vintages together as reserves, or bottle as Single Vintages. Malt whisky matures at its own pace and at Glenrothes, maturity is valued over age with each cask nosed and tasted many times before bottling to ensure the flavour is perfect.

Each residency is highlighted with a Julep special, July’s collaboration see’s ‘Joe’s Julep ft. The Glenrothes’ Speyside Single Malt’ grace the Kansas Smitty’s bar. Paying respect to the late, great Joe Temperley, a Julep as sweet as the music he played has been developed using The Glenrothes’ Single Malt, infused with vanilla, cloves, dark cherries, demerara cane, topped with a fresh cherry. Joe, a Scottish born, Glasgow raised jazz musician who made a big impression playing alongside the luminaries of the New York scene, played amongst the likes of Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson and even performed in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. This trans-Atlantic, improvisation fuses together his homeland and the place he made his name, all in one drink.

The tastings will take place on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th July between 6.30pm – 8.00pm.

Hooray for Virginia: Cocktails Now Being Served!

Virginia’s new law takes effect today, which means we can now serve full-sized cocktails at the Visitors Center. This is in light of a new law that increases the tasting limit to 3 ounces per person, per day. We’re adding a full-sized version of our seasonal, the Shenandoah Peach.

We’ve put a summertime twist on the classic whisky sour by adding a hint of peach, the perfect use for all of the delicious local peaches coming from Chiles Family Orchard. Better start planning your trip!

If you can’t make it in to see us, try the recipe at home. It is sure to please friends and family, just in time for the holiday weekend.

This recipe makes one cocktail: 1.5 ounces of Virginia Highland Malt 1 ounce of lime juice 1 ounce of lemon juice 1 ounce of peach simple syrup (see recipe below) Slice of fresh peach from a place like Chiles Family Orchards and a sprig of mint to garnish Combine the ingredients in a glass. Fill the glass with ice and stir. Garnish with a peach slice and mint sprig. Sit back and enjoy! To make peach simple syrup: Bring 3 cups distilled water to a boil in a 2 to 3 quart heavy saucepan over moderately high heat. Add 3 cups of sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and add 4 peach tea bags. Let steep for 20 minutes and then remove the tea bags. You may put leftover simple syrup into a container and refrigerate for up to two weeks.

Now Accepting Private Event Requests:

We’re excited to start sharing the Visitors Center and grounds with guests for private event rental requests. We offer flexible use based on party size and event style, between our interior space and our outdoor patio and porch. In addition, we have room for tent set-ups for larger groups. We can work with caterers and provide assistance with cocktails and the bar elements. If you have a small wedding, family celebration or corporate event coming up, shoot an email to events@vadistillery.com with event details to get rate information.

Scotch Whisky Auctions 63rd Auction Newsletter – Scotch Whisky News

SWA header

This month we have a cracking cavalcade of Scotch, Japanese, Irish and American whiskies to slake your thirst and arouse your interest.

Big Petrie once again gives us a sneak peak of this month’s auction here.

Firstly this month we have a crystal decanter that contains whiskey from Ireland. Distilled in 1943 and bottled by Douglas Laing 42 years later, this is one of only 36 decanters bottled, so the angels were especially greedy with this rare and special spirit.

From across the Atlantic we have a bottle from the ever exciting Pappy Van Winkle. This particular bottle was distilled in 1974 and bottled at 16 years of age.

There are three 50 year olds in this month’s auction. Firstly, from the lost Glenury Royal distillery, is whisky distilled in 1953, then two bottles from the same distillery and same bottler – one distilled in 1936 and the other in 1957. Gordon & MacPhail has bottled both these Mortlachs,o why not buy and try both as a compare and contrast exercise?

Glenlivet brings us a 49 year old bottled for the Italian market and Probably Speysides Finest Distillery pops up twice with 46 and 47 year old offerings. Glenfarclas from a cognac cask bottled at 43 years old is up next and a Pride of Strathspey from 1950 also makes an appearance.

We have a Talisker from 1947, a White Horse from 1937 and a Linkwood from 1938. As well as a Cardhu, 1962, Dalwhinnie, 1957, Glen Lochy, 1967, Springbank,1965, and a 39 year old Littlemill all from the Granddaddy of independent bottlers, Cadenhead’s.

There are two interesting Glenlossies in this month, one from Cadenhead’s and the other from Gordon & MacPhail. The first is 43 years old and was distilled in 1938 before being bottled for the Connoisseurs Choice range. The other comes from 1957 and was bottled after 20 years by Cadenhead’s.

As always we have an array of Karuizawa, Port Ellen and other lost and hard to find distilleries and bottlings as well as this year’s Feis Ile offerings.

Please explore at your leisure but remember, Don’t Lose Your Bottle!

All the best from us here at SWA HQ!
