Just Whisky October 2016 Auction LIVE! – Whisky News
October 2016 Whisky Auction – Live Now!
This month’s Just Whisky Auction has just kicked off in fine style. The quality and broad range of bottles this month is just outstanding! There are a little over 1,400 Lots, and in amongst them are some real crackers. Let’s take a look …
From Left to Right: Brora 24 Years Old – Rare Malts, Balvenie Vintage Cask 1966, Ardbeg Guaranteed 30 Years Old , Killyloch 1967, Bowmore 30 Years Old Kranna Dubh, Glen Grant 60 Years Old 1952, Ardbeg 21 Years Old, Dalmore 50 Years Old, Glen Keith-Glenlivet Cadenheads 22 Years Old, Laphroaig 30 Years Old. Ardbeg 24 Years Old Sestante, Cardhu 12 Years Old, Talisker 1959 G&M Flower Bottle, Balvenie 16 Years Old Rose 1st Release.
GBP £ Crashes
Asides from the whisky, the big news this month here in the UK is that the Great British Pound (£) has taken an absolute hammering and against the US Dollar it is the weakest it’s been in 29 years (since 1987). While it’s far from ideal for Brits travelling abroad, for whisky enthusiasts outside the U.K. it’s absolutely incredible news and a fantastic time to buy products (Whisky!) from the U.K. In real terms, a £1,000 bottle this time last year would have cost $1,547 USD or €1,360 EUR. Today the same bottle stands at $1,220 USD or €1,100. Similar situations exist with other World currencies including the Taiwanese Dollar (TWD). Why not take advantage of the situation and use it to secure some whisky at the best ever price.

THE GLASGOW SESSIONS – American Whiskey News
Following the success of the London Sessions and the New York Sessions, October 2016 will see the first ever installment in Scotland, adding a third city to the London Sessions map.
The first of its kind in the drinks industry, The London Sessions are the brain child of Rebekkah Dooley, a drinks industry professional with over 12 years experience in the hospitality industry who wanted to re-position “education” within the bar world. Set up as a series of thought provoking seminars with the industry’s most respected professionals, over 24 sessions have taken place since the first one in summer 2015.
With the support of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, the Glasgow Sessions will see three inspirational speakers from the world of drinks take the stage at St Luke’s Music and Arts venue.
It’s only fitting that the day would kick off with a Scotsman… One of Europe’s most acclaimed bartenders and owner of world-renowned Edinburgh venues; The Tales of the Cocktail “Best Restaurant Bar” The Bon Vivant, El Cartel and Devil’s Advocate, Stuart McCluskey will kick off proceedings with a session focusing on entrepreneurialism.
Next up, the formidable Erik Lorincz Head Bartender at The American Bar at The Savoy and multiple Tales of Cocktail award winner; there is nothing about mixology and making drinks that defy expectations this man doesn’t know. Hence, his session will be all around creativity.
Finally, the session will end on a high, with a talk around quality, from non other than Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett. Jeff is the seventh master distiller and has held the coveted position since 2008, overseeing the quality and consistency of the world’s biggest premium whiskey brand.

The Isle of the Unexpected? Jura Relocates to London – Scotch Whisky News
The Isle of the Unexpected? Jura Relocates to London
Jura takes its island to central London, as it learns that 70% of Londoners don’t know where it is
Jura Whisky announces that it is taking its remote island home to London – as it reveals that more than 70% of Londoners don’t know where it is, geographically.
While almost half knew of the island’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a massive 72.5% of 1,000 Londoners surveyed didn’t actually know where to find it on a map – with 12% thinking it is somewhere in England, 10% thinking it is in Hungary and 14% of those surveyed unable to guess at Jura’s location*.
Now Jura wants to put its island home in the spotlight, giving Londoners a unique chance to explore its incredible coastlines, community, culture and craft without leaving the city – with a new experiential event created in collaboration with immersive art duo Art of Disappearing.
From 13th October, The Isle of the Unexpected invites Londoners to join an interactive, mystery adventure to help a fictional film director, Eric, find the inspiration he needs to finish his script. The answer lies on the island of Jura, which ticketholders can access through a secret door in The Looking Glass bar in Shoreditch. Londoners can expect to discover the island over a dram or two as they are guided by audio headset through physical sets, experience virtual reality flight and hunt for clues.
Nestled in the Inner Hebrides just off the West Coast of Scotland, the isle of Jura is as beautiful as it is remote. It has just one road, one pub, one shop and one iconic distillery, which employs 10% of the island’s population to craft Jura’s single malt whisky. Jura is just over half the size of central London, except with a population of just 200 people, who are vastly outnumbered by over 6,000 deer which roam the island.
This isn’t the first time Jura’s location has caused confusion – in 2013, it made headlines as it fell off Google maps. And while the general population in London might be unsure of its whereabouts, Jura’s remote location and dramatic coastlines have certainly made an impression amongst the cultural community – author George Orwell wrote 1984 while living there and the KLF notoriously burned one million pounds on the island. Jura has also served as a writing retreat for a number of musicians, most recently the Glaswegian band Errors, which wrote tracks for the album Lease of Life there.
Graham Logan, Jura Distillery manager, said:
“People don’t know exactly where on the map you can find us. I’m not surprised as it can take up to 16 hours by train, plane, ferry and car to get from London to Jura and back again – but I’m proud of our award winning whiskies, which are enjoyed across the whole world.
Our island, distillery and community is full of wonderful stories just waiting to be uncovered, and it has inspired many authors and artists over the years. We welcome hundreds of visitors to the island every year, though The Isle of the Unexpected is the next best thing for those who want to discover the different sides of Jura and can’t make the long trip!”
The Isle of the Unexpected, 13-15 & 19-22 October, The Looking Glass, 49 Hackney Rd, London E2 7NX, £5 plus 50p booking fee (includes two drams of Jura Whisky)

NOTES
About Jura:
Jura is an island nestled off the West Coast of Scotland. With only one road, one pub, one distillery and 200 people, Jura is as beautiful as it is remote. The distillery was established in 1810 and reborn in 1963 to revive the community. Inspired by our history and our island home, we create single malt with a true passion for the craft of whisky making.

WOODFORD RESERVE PRESENTS THE WOODFORD ALLIANCE:
SIX BARS. THREE NIGHTS. ONE LOCATION. ONE BOURBON.
Imagine a world where you didn’t have to travel hundreds of miles to experience the best New York cocktails, or most exciting Amsterdam serves. Woodford Reserve, the small batch craft bourbon, brings you ‘The Woodford Alliance’, a pop up experience designed to make this a reality. As part of London Cocktail Week 2016, The Woodford Alliance will take place in Shoreditch in early October, bringing six of the world’s best bars together over three epic nights.
Each evening Woodford Reserve will partner with two leading bars, one from London and one international, combining the best-loved elements of each bar in one venue. Compare the pencil portraits and modern cocktails of New York’s Suffolk Arms with the wooden panelling and punch at London’s award winning Punch Room at The London EDITION … And that’s just Wednesday evening.… Each night the dressing, experience, staff and bar menu will change, with the drinks list including two of each bar’s most iconic Woodford Reserve drinks. Light bites, based on the bars’ menus, will be served, whilst specially curated music playlists from the bars run through the evening.
On Tuesday consumers will be treated to a partnership between London’s epochal hidden away speakeasy, Nightjar and Stockholm’s New Orleans-inspired Little Quarter. Wednesday will host TimeOut’s ‘Bar of the Year’ 2016, The Punch Room, with New York’s Lower East Side cocktail bar, inspired by the typical British pub, The Suffolk Arms. Finally, Thursday will pair the quirky and experimental Peg + Patriot, with the rich history of Amsterdam’s finest offering, The Tailor.
Woodford Reserve will also run masterclasses at the event, demonstrating how to make their signature serve, The Old Fashioned. Masterclasses are priced at £15 and include two drinks on the night and a take away gift.
The events will take place at the White Rabbit Studios, 471-473, The Arches, Dereham Place, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3HJ on Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th October from 5pm.
