RABBIE BURNS AND H.M. THE QUEEN AT BONHAMS CHRISTMAS WHISKY SALE – Scotch Whisky News
RABBIE BURNS AND H.M. THE QUEEN AT BONHAMS CHRISTMAS WHISKY SALE
Bottle of Black Bowmore 1964, estimated at £5,000-6,000; The Macallan Robert Burns Semiquincentenary (1759-2009), estimated at £1,500-1,800
Two bottles of Black Bowmore 1964 lead Bonhams annual Christmas Whisky sale in Edinburgh on 7 December. They are estimated at £5,000-6,000 each.
One bottle is from the Second Edition of the Black Bowmore 1964 that was bottled in 1994 and limited to 2000 bottles; the other comes from the Final Edition bottled in 1995 of which there were a total of 1812 bottles. Morrison’s Bowmore Distillery produced three editions from 1993-5.
As usual, the Christmas Whisky sale has some bottles with fascinating histories and associations including:
- The Macallan Robert Burns Semiquincentenary (1759-2009) which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national poet. (£1,500-1,800).
- The Macallan Diamond Jubilee bottled in 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (£1,200-1,500).
One of the most intriguing lots is the Bruichladdich Château d’Yquem Finish 20 year old (£750-850 for three bottles). The whisky has been aged for 15 years in a Bourbon cask and then finished in a cask that previously contained Chateau d’Yquem, the most famous Sauternes from one of the finest wine-producing areas in the world.
Bonhams whisky specialist, Martin Green, said, “Bonhams December whisky sale has something for everyone, from limited editions of cask-aged whiskies aimed at the dedicated collector to modestly priced malts that will help get the Christmas season off to a flying start.”

HIGHLAND PARK CELEBRATES SOLSTICE WITH MIDWINTER SOCIAL OLD TRUMAN BREWERY | 24-25 NOVEMBER 2016 – Scotch Whisky News
HIGHLAND PARK CELEBRATES SOLSTICE WITH MIDWINTER SOCIAL
OLD TRUMAN BREWERY | 24-25 NOVEMBER 2016
Highland Park Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the ‘Orkney Single Malt with Viking Soul’ distributed by Maxxium UK, is taking over The Boiler House at London’s Old Truman Brewery for their Midwinter Social. Taking place over two evenings, the events will celebrate the longer nights in anticipation of Winter Solstice.
An important time of year in the Nordic calendar and at Highland Park’s home on Orkney, Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year and is typically celebrated with good friends, bonfires, music and dance.
The Highland Park Midwinter Social at The Boiler House on Brick Lane will bring to life the brand’s magnificent Viking heritage through the following:
- Music from Kipps on Thursday 24 November and Friday 25 November
- A live set from DJ Finnebassen on Thursday 24 November
- Eelke Kleijn will provide live music on Friday 25 November
- Highland Park infused cocktails
- Nordic inspired food curated by Root + Bone
- Highland Park whisky tastings around a fire pit
- An interactive photo “bothy” for guests to enjoy
- A chance to meet Highland Park distillery workers from Orkney
The brand is extending its Solstice celebrations with activation in key trade accounts in and around Shoreditch including Bull in a China Shop, Cocktail Trading Co., The Culpeper, Translate and Looking Glass. Supporting bars will feature creative Highland Park serves and the top selling accounts will also have the chance to win a trip to the Highland Park distillery on Orkney.
Highland Park is also supporting the trade activation with a consumer photography competition on Instagram. Consumers will be encouraged to share a photo of themselves enjoying a Highland Park serve at participating bars using the hashtag #VikingSoul.
Thursday evening’s event will be broadcast to a global audience via Facebook live, and will feature live music sets from Kipps and Finnebassen, as well as a whisky tasting with global brand ambassador, Martin Markvardsen.
Mike MacKenzie, Highland Park brand manager said: “We are looking forward to celebrating Highland Park’s Viking heritage once again at our Midwinter Social, following the success of our Midsummer Social in June this year. With a bigger venue and more immersive experiences, the Midwinter Social is the perfect opportunity for guests to celebrate winter with friends. A big part of this celebration also involves our key trade accounts with Shoreditch bars featuring a range of creative Highland Park serves on their menus.”
Tickets for the Midwinter Social on Thursday 24 November and Friday 25 November can be booked here or visit http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/ and search ‘Highland Park’.

Rare and Independent:
Chieftain’s & Chapter 7

This is a very special event; Independent bottlers Chieftan’s and Chapter 7 bring their award winning and extremely rare collections for one free tasting!
Chapter 7: Most independent bottlers go after the much-sought “big names” whereas Chapter 7™ acts as a spotlight for the lesser-known distillery casks with exceptional quality and character. They seek to offer novelty and exclusivity, presenting rare drams with stories as unique as their taste.
Chapter 7’s efforts have recently been awarded the Liquid Gold Award (94.5 Points) by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2016 for their Tormore 1995 Single Cask release (much to the surprise of Jim Murray himself!) and have netted consistently high ratings both from The Whisky Bible and international competitions.
Chieftan’s: Chieftan’s is known throughout the whisky world for producing highly reviewed bottlings from noteworthy distilleries in very limited batches – Each bottling is fit for a King, a Leader or in the Celtic world, a Chieftain.
Released at the peak of perfection, at up to 50 years old, each small batch release is bottled at natural colour and unchillfiltered to preserve the natural aromas of the whisky for a fuller flavour and smoother taste.
These are only a few of the many free tastings planned this month!

Note: The SIA tasting previously scheduled for November 11th has been moved to November 25th. Hope to see you there!

Three Nights of Whisky at the Victoria Whisky Festival 2017! – Whisky News
THREE NIGHTS OF WHISKY!
TICKET PACKAGES AVAILABLE
Thursday January 19th, 2017 – Evening
BC Distillers with Mark Gillespie and BC Distillers
British Columbia is rapidly becoming one of Canada’s centres of craft spirits excellence, with distillers beginning to push the boundaries of Canadian Whisky tradition. BC distillers are building on the province’s reputation for quality to produce spirits including Scotch-style single malts, and while the British Columbia spirits industry is still in its infancy, the future appears bright.
WhiskyCast’s Mark Gillespie will lead a panel discussion and whisky tasting with distillers from eight BC distilleries: Shelter Point, Dubh Glas, Victoria Distillers, Odd Society, Pemberton Distillery, The Liberty Distillery, Okanagan Spirits, and deVine Spirits. Each distillery will bring a unique whisky for this Grand Tasting, including experimental whiskies that may never be available for tasting again.
We’ll look at how recent legislation at the provincial level has made it easier for craft distillers to reach consumers, whether British Columbia’s unique “terroirs” make a difference, and whether “organic” production makes a difference in the final spirit (or just helps in marketing).
Friday January 19th, 2017 – Evening
The Dave Broom Craft Whiskies Grand Tasting
Corby’s craft range is one of the most highly awarded in the world and features; Pike Creek 10 Year Old, Lot 40 100% pot stilled Rye, Gooderham and Worts Four Grain and JP Wiser’s 18 Year Old. However, this year they will release uniquely rare expressions of each of these in highly allocated quantities. The driving principle behind this incredible range is simple; to create the finest collection of Canadian Whisky ever released. This will be the first public tasting of these expressions in the world. Renowned whisky writers and authors Davin de Kergommeaux and Dave Broom will be joined by Corby’s Master Blender Dr. Don Livermore as they discuss what sets Canadian Whisky apart as a category through the lens of these incredible whiskies.

Nurtured in our legendary No.1 vaults, Bowmore Single Malt is widely acknowledged to be among the finest and most perfectly balanced in the world.

THE WORLD’S GREATEST WHISKY BAR, FOR ONE WEEKEND ONLY…
11.30am-6.30pm, 18-19 February 2017 (last pour at 6.10pm) Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow
For 2017, we are adding a new show to our line-up – The Whisky Show: Old and Rare. The show brings together some of the world’s rarest and most sought-after whiskies under one roof – it is the world’s best whisky bar, for one weekend only.
