Whiskey Obsession Festival Presents the Pappy Van Winkle Flight and Dinner

with Whiskey Expert Tom Fischer

The Whiskey Obsession Festival in conjunction with Spirit Guide, Inc. is thrilled to announce the Pappy Van Winkle Flight and Dinner with Tom Fischer of the Bourbon Blog, Friday, November 2, 2018 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Francis in downtown Sarasota, Florida. This is the first time on the Gulf Coast of Florida that the entire range of these rare and expensive American Bourbon whiskies will be available to sample. For the whiskey fan, it’s a once in a lifetime event.

The Van Winkle line is composed of five fine Bourbon whiskies – Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year, Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year, Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year, Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year – and the Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 Year Rye. Cost is $295 per person and includes four course dinner. Tickets are limited to 35 guests.

Our speaker is whiskey expert Tom Fischer, founder of BourbonBlog.com, the country’s premier resource for American Whiskey and Bourbon commentary. He is the creator of the world’s first ever Whiskey Sommelier Program with students from around the globe. Tom was one of the first to report on the intense interest in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon that began over a decade ago and he continues to follow this premier brand. Tom is also a Kentucky Colonel, an honor bestowed on him by the governor of the state.

The Seventh Annual Whiskey Obsession Festival (WOF) will be held April 10 to 13, 2019 in Sarasota, Florida. Whiskey Obsession is the largest world whiskey festival in the U.S., with four days of classes, tastings, lunch and dinner pairings, expanded bartender academy, interactive panel discussions, cigars, VIP pours, a fabulous grand tasting with hundreds of whiskies and cocktails to sample, plus free live music street party in the heart of downtown. A portion of festival proceeds is awarded to a qualified 501c3 annually.

Maltstock 2018 “Thank you & see you in 2019!” – Whisky News

Maltstock 2018

Thank you & see you in 2019!

Even if you did not manage to join us this year, please feel invited to join the next. If you order your ticket(s) before the 1st of October 2018 you get a relaxed € 25 discount. Just use the  couponcode “earlybird2019” at the end of the order process.

Maltstock 2019 is 6-8 September

MS3

Relaxed and (a bit more) sustainable

We ran an experiment this year to try and reduce the amount of plastic water bottles used during Maltstock, while keeping up the availability of water. So we arranged for Bottle clips and Relaxed Drinking Water Refill Points.

And… it worked! By doing this we reduced the amount of plastic bottles used by 50%!! That is over 1000 bottles less! So thanks for relaxedly refilling!

WM3

Balblair Single Malt Scotch

Situated just north of Inverness on the coast of Dornoch Firth, Balblair Distillery has stood the test of time with the earliest records dating to 1749, though officially started in 1790! With only a brief 38 year hiatus corresponding with wartime economic downturn, Balblair has hand crafted each vintage to provide the very best the Distillery has to offer for 228 years. Of course whisky making became legal in 1823, but we won’t tell if you won’t! Known for their core characteristics of apricots, oranges, spices, floral notes and green apples, these give way to heavier oils and lipids, and then finish with a leathery, nutty and full-bodied whisky. Distillery Manger, John MacDonald, waits for each whisky to reach its ‘optimum maturation’ aka ‘the peak of perfection’ before he allows it to be bottled. Therefore Balblair ends up as a vintage release, rather than a 10 year or 12 year old, for example. If you want to know the age, you have to know when it was bottled and then consider the vintage, do some math, and voila! All three Texas shows feature some delectable vintages from Balblair this September.

WM4

Jim Beam Bourbon

With a 200 year history, Jim Beam not only is one of the oldest Bourbon makers in America, they are also one of the few still being made by the same family after 7 generations! Jim Beam is one of the best selling whiskeys around the world, often being the #1 Bourbon sold by volume! Bourbon was originally made from excess corn that farmers had to grow as part of their agreement to gain free land from the US government as they went west! Bourbon can be made in any state in the US and is defined by being at least 51% corn and aged in new oak barrels which are charred. The charring originally started before the barrels had to be new, as a way to get the other tastes out of the barrel. Originally called Old Tub, the name was changed to Jim Beam to honor the man who brought the distillery back to life after prohibition! Subsequent expressions also are named in honor of the family members who continue to make this great whisky, like the eponymous Booker Noe, for Booker’s Small Batch Bourbon.

WM5

Penderyn Welsh Whisky

‘The red dragon inspires action.’ A group of friends took Wales national motto and resurrected a sleeping dragon from the depths of Brecken Beacons in 2004 to make Penderyn Whisky, the first whisky distillery in Wales in over a century. The lost art of Welsh whisky took flight with the single malt ‘Dragon’ collection:  Legend, Myth, and Celt. The sweet Maderia finish of Legend, with it’s fresh apples and citrus fruits create a fresh, complex, and well balanced whisky. Perfect for letting sleeping dragons lie. Myth is an ex-red wine and ex-bourbon cask single malt. Just like the sly dragon, don’t let Myth’s upfront sweetness fool you! There’s a refreshing mid-bitterness just before the final pass of flight to its light style. The sleeping dragon has awoken! Rising with fire and smoke, Penderyn Celt, is finished in ex-peated quarter casks. Its light dragon’s breath’s peat smoke rises with sunny marmalade, leaving a long, lingering trail in its wake. Beware of dragons bearing gifts… yet, in this case, you may want to accept this present from Wales, just now available in the US.

WM6

Douglas Laing Scotch

Established in 1948, Douglas Lang focuses on artisan, small batch and single cask bottlings of fine Scotch Whisky. The company searches for the finest, and often rarest, casks from Scotland’s Whisky regions, offering the consumer a unique experience of high alcohol strength, no coloring or chill-filtration of the spirit in their independently bottled whiskies. They will be a leader in distillation in the future with the announcement of their new state of the art Glaswegian distillery, Clutha, set to open in 2019. The Exceptional Malts Specialize in Single Malts, Single Grain, Blended Malts, and Blended Whisky with six unique expressions coming to Whiskies of the World this fall. The Epicurean is a Lowland Blended Malt, while Scallywag is a Small Batch, Speyside Blended Malt release, named for a family dog and comprised of deliciously sherried drams. Big Peat Christmas, as the name implies, is a peaty dram of malts only from Islay. Timorous Beastie, named from a line in a Robert Burns poem, actually makes an ironic statement being a big, bold blended malt with no mousiness anywhere to be found!  Rock Oyster is a blended malt of only Island scotches, featuring maritime flavors and peat. Gauldrons is a blend of only Campbeltown malts and the name means “bay of storms”, describing the dark coves of west Campbeltown.

WM7

Garrison Brother’s Texas Whiskey

Located in the Texas Hill Country, Garrison Brothers Distillery, founded in 2005, is the oldest legal whiskey distillery in Texas. They grow 65 acres of wheat on property, use Texas harvested organic corn, while barley is sourced from the Pacific Northwest. The mixture is milled and mashed, then fermented for four days before going to the ‘copper cowgirl’, a copper pot still. Once distilled, the bourbon is aged in charred American Oak where it picks up rich, deep aroma of butterscotch, nutmeg, vanilla and coconut. Tasting notes include caramelized oranges and fruit, along with touches of melted butter, whipped cream and oak. The finish is smooth, with touches of toffee, milk chocolate and espresso. I don’t know about you, but my mouth is watering! They have seven expressions, from Small Batch and Private Cask to Estacado, a port finished straight bourbon, and for those looking for Texas adventure, The Cowboy is uncut, unfiltered straight bourbon whiskey at 137 proof! One last note: Garrison Brothers has a wonderful Texas sense of humor! We recommend visiting their website at www.garrisonbros.com for a good belly laugh. Be sure to read the FAQ page.

This is just a small sample of the hundreds of whiskies from which you can choose to try at a Whiskies of the World event. There is something for every taste, and it all comes together in one great evening! Gather your friends, don your kilts, your dinner jackets and party dresses, and come on out for an unforgettable night of food, cigars, and whisky! Tickets are now on sale for our 2018 shows in Texas and Atlanta, and our 2019 shows in California!

Cheers, Whiskies of the World

Canada Distils

a new book from

CWN1

After what seems an eternity of planning, traveling from coast to coast, and writing, Blair Phillips and I are overjoyed that our forthcoming book, called Canada Distils, will be published on the Appetite by Random House imprint of Penguin Random House Canada. Thank you to everyone who has helped and hosted us in our travels so far. We’re not done yet, so don’t be surprised if we call or drop by looking for information.

The book profiles of all of Canada’s operating distilleries, large and small, along with little-known details for visitors and armchair visitors alike. There is so much more between the pages, but you’ll just have to be patient to find out what.

The Strath / Shelter Point exclusives

Two new Shelter Point whiskies, both exclusive to The Strath liquor store in Victoria are well worth hunting down. Shelter Point is really coming into its own and The Strath has picked two of its honeyest honey barrels to release as single-cask whiskies. A Classic Single Malt distilled in 2011 and an Avant-Garde Barley from 2013 are both bottled at 57.3%.

Look for typical lush malty notes in the Classic, underscored by baking spices, citrus fruit and fresh bread. Avant-Garde Barley matured in a Vancouver Island blackberry wine barrel, bursts with jammy fruit, toasted grain and citrus hints.

CWN5

Yukon’s Two Brewers

Meanwhile, in Whitehorse, Two Brewers continue to impress with their latest whiskies including Release 10, their first cask-strength whisky to date. Bottled at 58%, its grassy notes, sweet tobacco and cereals bask in a gentle bed of Werther’s caramel.

A Pedro Ximinez finish adds sweetness and ripe fruity tones to Release 9, which is bottled at 46%.

CWN6

Canadian Rockies 17 Year Old

All the excitement about the recently released Canadian Rockies 21 may have overshadowed another real gem of a whisky. Sourced from Highwood Distillers in Alberta, Canadian Rockies 17 year old is one more example of the glories of slow maturation. Canadian Rockies 17, bottled at 50% abv, delivers all the spiciness, luscious corn and crisp clean woody notes we’ve come to expect in well-aged corn whisky.

CWN7

Banff Whisky Experience

On September 28 & 29, the inaugural Banff Whisky Experience will offer 15 master classes for curious drammers who want to experience new whiskies. My two classes alone include whiskies very few people will have tasted before.

This is shaping up to be one of Canada’s premiere whisky events, and you certainly can’t complain about the location. The complete schedule is now available at https://www.banffwhiskyexperience.com.
