SOCIETY RELEASE AND TASTING UPDATE

With the continued uncertainty surrounding live events and large gatherings due to the pandemic, we made the difficult decision to cancel our Malts Festival in Campbeltown for the second year running. 

In October 2020 we held our first online tasting events over five evenings focusing each night on one of the group brands. With the success of this, we have decided to arrange our Online Tasting Week 2.0 and are pleased to share the dates with you. We hope you will be able to join us!

Recently we sent you details for the next society bottle and online tasting event plans with corresponding tasting pack for our members.

We are pleased to say that we are making good progress on resuming shipping to EU countries and we are optimistic that we will be able to launch these in the near future. You will be notified by email with instructions on how to enter the ballot for a chance to buy a bottle and tasting pack. The details are included below for the attention of all new members.

We will be hosting an online tasting with four unique drams, carefully selected from our 1992 stocks. Society members will have the opportunity to watch our online tasting and provide their feedback on which of these casks they would like to be considered for a future Society bottling.

Each pack contains 4 x 2cl samples.

• Springbank 28yo Spirit Drink – Rum Barrel – 38.1% ABV
• Springbank 28yo – Oloroso Sherry Hogshead – 51.3% ABV

We will confirm the date and time for the tasting when we launch the ballot online. You will receive further instructions and information prior to launch by email.

PLEASE NOTE:

• Both the Society Bottle and the Tasting Pack will be allocated via a ballot, all instructions will be provided by email soon. Please read this carefully to enter.
• Each Society member will be able to enter the ballot for a maximum of one bottle and one tasting pack.
• At the time of writing, we are not currently accepting any entries to the ballot, nor can we accept orders in any other way.
• If you need to contact us for any reason please email society@springbank.scot. Our team are currently working from home and therefore we will not be in the office to answer any phone calls.
• Although we will be able to deliver your order to your home address, due to the current Covid-19 situation throughout Europe, we will not be able to ship items to any Cadenhead’s shop. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Each release digs into a different aspect of whisky making, showing off what the Macallan team can do. All six have flown off the shelves and this is a rare chance to try them all.

What’s next?

It’s all go on the events front, with recent announcements giving us hope that we should be able to start running in-person tastings again sometime soon. In the meantime, we’re still putting together plans for April and beyond.

This week also sees Whisky Show: Old & Rare landing on Facebook. All of the tasting packs have now sold out, apart from the last couple for the Longmorn tasting, but even without the whiskies you can still watch the classes for free on Facebook. The Dram Team Partners With 6 Inspirational Whisky Women for Charity Tasting Event

The Dram Team, a Bristol based leading whisky tasting subscription company, has teamed up with six inspirational women from the whisky industry to host a one-of-a-kind virtual whisky tasting. In celebration of International Women’s Day falling on the 8^th of March, this special whisky tasting set features 6 whiskies where women played a key part in their creation. Tasting set boxes will be available throughout March, and all proceeds will be donated to charity.

The Women in Whisky virtual tasting will take place on Wednesday 10^th of March at 8pm on The Dram Team’s Facebook and YouTube channels. Dram Team Head of Marketing Harri Sharman will host the event and be joined by an impressive array of (female) representatives from Nc’nean, Compass Box, Tamnavulin, J.J. Corry, Penderyn, and Cardrona.

The tasting offers participants a rare chance to meet a wide range of whisky pros, ask questions, and taste six high-quality whiskies, all from the comfort of their own home.

Not only that, but everyone who takes part will be supporting two charities tied to the Women in Whisky theme, with the Dram Team donating proceeds equally to Bristol Women’s Voice – an equality focused charity local to their offices in Bristol – and The Drinks Trust – an industry charity supporting hospitality workers throughout the pandemic.

One of the tasting panel guests is Annabel Thomas, founder and CEO of Nc’nean Distillery. She says, “I’m so excited to be participating in this event – both to be supporting two fantastic charities and to be part of an awesome line up of whiskies. Looking forward to sharing some stories and a dram!”

Chris Borrow, founder of the Dram Team, believes whisky should be enjoyed by anyone: “People who work in whisky know that women are very much at the heart and soul of the industry, but a lot of daft, sexist myths still persist despite this. The Women in Whisky box aims to dispel these myths and send a clear message that whisky is for everyone.”

Harri Sharman, who will be hosting the event, agrees. “This event, to me, is not just about recognising and celebrating some of the amazing work that women are doing in the whisky industry, it’s also a fantastic whisky tasting in its own right. I was so excited to work on this project because of the great quality of the whiskies, the variety of flavours, and the talent of the women involved, and I think the two charities we’ve chosen do so much to support all types of people in both the whisky industry and the wider world.”

The tasting is open to all, but those interested in tasting the whiskies as well can pre-purchase their whisky tasting boxes for £34.99. They’ll also have the option to make an additional donation to these charities should they wish.

We are delighted to have been awarded the Highly Commended (runners up) recognition in this years Icons of Whisky Awards 2021!

In what has been a tumultuous year of ups and downs, to finish the year with this accolade has been a huge reward for the hard work our team has put in since we opened in 2015.

It is certainly the pinnacle of our achievements so far, since the start of our little business half a decade ago. While we have also achieved a Specialist Retailer of the Year award and Businessman of the Year Nomination in local business recognition awards, to be recognised by those in the Whisky Industry in one of the biggest ceremonies within the secotre, is truly humbling.

We must put a shout out to the winners, Michael Hanratty and his team at Carnegie Whisky Cellars who have endured the drought of tourism on who they depend. To not only persevere but to enhance their business is no mean feat in the current climate – congratulations!

The Awards, for those who have not heard of them before, are an annual recognition awards ceremony that are chosen by the team behind the UK’s biggest Whisy Magazine – ‘Whisky Magazine.

“The 2021 Icons of Whisky awards honours those who have worked tirelessly for the growth of the industry.”

To simply be in the final against such great names in Whisky Retail such as The Whisky Shop Dufftown, Gordon & MacPhail and Robertsons of Pitlochry was an unexpected honour, however to come Runners Up is simply outstanding.

We now have a target for the year ahead, to maintain the standards we have set and to prove that this was not a flash in the pan. We are now more determined than ever to create a host of new adventures for the Inverurie Whisky Shop and the Aberdeenshire area.

Our team has grown from 3 to 5, such is the success of our Virtual Tasting events and our Online growth, and we cannot wait to bring you, our loyal customers more great events and news in the coming months.

We could not have done this without every one of you, and we cherish every single order that comes in from you, either to be delivered on our doorstep, or sent through the new trials of the European Customs system. We do a little dance every time.
