WHISKY REVELLERS CELEBRATE AS SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE WHISKY FESTIVAL RETURNS – Scotch Whisky News

WHISKY REVELLERS CELEBRATE AS SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE WHISKY FESTIVAL RETURNS

Over 2,000 ticket holders celebrated the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Limited Edition when it made a welcome return last week after the pandemic.

The world-famous Speyside region – the global epicentre of Scotland’s national drink – drew in both local and international crowds, paving the way for a stellar line up of events in 2022. The local economy also received a welcome boost after such a long period of lockdown in 2021.

The festival featured new and existing events. One which proved to be popular was the Scottish Aperitivo Hour, hosted at Craigellachie Bridge by the John Dewar’s & Sons brand ambassadors, Matthew Cordiner, Gary Ross and Mike McGinty. New and old friends shared a dram of Aultmore or Craigellachie while embracing the beautiful views of Speyside.

Now in its 22nd year, the six-day festival followed a virtual event lineup back in April due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year marks the final chapter of James Campbell’s 10-year reign as chair of the festival. George McNeil will now officially take over the position and is working with the team to plan an action packed calendar of events for next year which will see the festival return to its usual format from 27 April to 2 May 2022.

Speaking of the festival’s success, George McNeil, chairman, commented:

“With over 260 successful events it has been fantastic to bring the best of our iconic whisky region to the public.  It’s been a challenging time for everybody and to see people celebrating all things Scotch in person rather than just via a screen has  been incredible.

“We are now even more excited for the 2022 festival which will take place next spring.  We have plans in place to make that the biggest and best programme of events yet, so watch this space.

“I’m also very proud to officially take the reins from James Campbell who has achieved so much, getting the festival to where it is today.  I wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours and will look forward to catching up with him over a dram at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2022.”

James Campbell added:

“Spirit of Speyside is always about whisky, music, food and fun and brings together so many of our local companies to create an amazing selection of events.  This, combined with the renowned Speyside hospitality has proven a winning formula over the years.”

There were a multitude of events across the Limited Edition programme. Chivas showcased cocktail skills providing five freshly made cocktails at its Strathisla Distillery Cocktail evening and distillery manager Keith Cruickshank held a tasting at Gordon and McPhail to showcase the new Benromach 40 Year Old which ticket holders described as a remarkable dram.

The Dowans Hotel chefs constructed an afternoon tea on the flavour profile of a Glenallachie 12 Year Old, this consisted of strapatsada, butternut squash and chilli soup with a herb cracker, along with scones, rhubarb and ginger cupcake, coca cola pie and a burnt butter caramelised and chocolate almond blondie.

A new addition to the festival event selection was Drams in the Dark hosted at Glen Moray Distillery. Ticket holders explored the distillery at night and listened to production stories around an open fire to set the atmosphere.

LONDON, 10 November 2021 – Online bidding opens today on The Distillers One of One sale, ahead of the live auction at Barnbougle Castle outside Edinburgh, Scotland on Friday 3 December 2021. For the first time since the announcement earlier this year of a six-year partnership between The Distillers’ Charity and Sotheby’s to host three biennial auctions under the name The Distillers One of One, the contents of the inaugural sale are now being unveiled in full. In total, the auction will present 42 lots of ultra-rare and unique Scotch whiskies and experiences, ranging in estimates from £1,000 upwards to £500,000 – all to be offered without reserve.

The highest value lot in the sale is a Talisker Cask of Distinction 1978, donated by Diageo and selected on account of its outstanding quality (est. £350,000-500,000). The 43-Year-Old cask of still-maturing Talisker single malt Scotch whisky is paired with a cask-end that has been turned into an original work of art by acclaimed Scottish artist and Turner Prize nominee Callum Innes – revealed here for the first time. Once the successful bidder chooses to bottle the cask, they will become the sole owner of one of the world’s rarest and most highly respected whiskies, with dedicated packaging featuring the artwork of Callum Innes, a first for Casks of Distinction.

Also newly revealed is the striking, hand blown black glass vessel housing 1.4l of the first ever 51 Year Old released by Bowmore along with a 100ml tasting sample, taking its inspiration from the terroir of its island home on Islay. This exceptionally rare and entirely unique single malt, matured in a barrel from 1970, is an encapsulation of time, with over half a century of craftsmanship, quality and character embedded in its genesis and story (est. £100,000-180,000).

A recent addition to the line-up is The Glencairn Ruby Tribute Blended Scotch Whisky. This Ruby encrusted decanter contains a one of one whisky blended by Richard Paterson – The Dalmore’s Master Blender – using contributions from some of the world’s most revered master blenders. All component whiskies of this blend were matured to in excess of 18 years and the final blend uniquely captures a true moment of whisky history (est. £5,000-10,000).

A one of one bottling of Littlemill Testament – incorporating stone from the original distillery and set in a unique case with hand blown 18th century glassware – is the distillery’s oldest release to date, with the liquid taken from a single distillation date of 4th October 1976. From this liquid, 250 numbered bottles were released, however a further four bottles were retained to create unique one-off editions that integrate either slate, glass, wood or stone from the original distillery into the release (est. £10,000-16,000).

Proceeds from The Distillers One of One auction will benefit the Youth Action Fund, which has been created by The Distillers’ Charity to transform the life chances of 16 to 25-year-old people in Scotland, empowering them to create positive change in their lives and communities. To achieve this, the trustees of Distillers’ Charity commissioned the social enterprise, Inspiring Scotland to undertake a detailed scoping report. They have curated, on behalf of the Distillers’ Charity, a small portfolio of charities for the Youth Action Fund, including:

Aberdeen Foyer, a charitable organisation supporting people towards independent living, learning and work.

The Alcohol Education Trust (AET), which works across the UK to keep young people safe around alcohol.

ENABLE Scotland, which delivers a range of support services across Scotland, including the ENABLE Works service which provides employment and skills support, assisting people with disabilities or other challenges into employment.

Street League, which uses the power of sport to support young people living in some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities into work.

A full list of lots with estimates is attached.

The Distillers: One of One sale will begin at 13:30 GMT on 3 December.  Online bidding starts today, 10 November.

About The Distillers One of One

Launched in 2021, the Distillers One of One is a biennial series of auctions of Scottish whisky in aid of disadvantaged young people in Scotland.  Led by The Distiller’s Charity, the philanthropic arm of The Worshipful Company of Distillers, and in partnership with Sotheby’s, the Scotch Whisky industry has gathered together to support philanthropy. Participating distilleries are donating ultra-rare whisky and experiences for sale at auction aiming to raise in excess of £1 million during the initial 3 December 2021 auction.

In order to help transform the life chances of young people in Scotland post pandemic, The Distillers’ Charity  has created the Youth Action Fund. The proceeds from the Distillers One of One auction will be disbursed from the fund to a number of charities that focus on empowering Scotland’s young adults to create positive change in their lives and communities. Sotheby’s will also donate a portion of their buyer’s premium from the auction to The Distillers’ Charity.

About The Worshipful Company of Distillers

Whisky of the Month – Mortlach 20 Year Old at The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

MORTLACH

20 YEAR OLD
COWIE’S BLUE SEAL

70CL | 43.4% £165

WAS £195 SAVE £30

BUY NOW

An elegant 20-year-old single malt from Mortlach, offering a more refined look at The Beast of Dufftown (the distillery’s nickname). Matured exclusively in sherry casks this whisky finds a balance between rich sherried fruits and oaky spice.

The elegant oldie in the Mortlach range, channeling The Beast of Dufftown (the distillery’s nickname) into a more refined form. Matured solely in sherry casks, the whisky has been crafted to match rich and dark sherry character against old, refined oaky notes. It’s one to take time with, well-balanced and complex, with much more going on than you might expect.

TASTING NOTES

  • Tasting notes from Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • NOSE

Olive oil, sultanas and green apples to lead. Warm, oily engines hide right at the back, with soft fruity notes pushing forward – sweet apples, raisins and mixed peel. Tropical notes begin to emerge: pineapple and candied papaya. Brown sugar and toasted oak slowly builds.

    • PALATE

Demerara-sugar dusted apples, olive-oil sponge cake and a bowl of mixed sultanas and raisins. Darker flavours slowly develop, with dark chocolate, dates and prunes balanced against fresher apple and pear orchard fruit notes. Hints of honey and menthol appear towards the end.

    • FINISH

Honey and menthol to start – lemon Lockets without the lemons – with nuts and vanilla to follow.

    • COMMENT

Harking back to the elegance of the Mortlach 25 Year Old from the previous range, this layers on sherry notes and adds extra depth to that dram’s more gentle character. A marriage of traditional sherry with old Mortlach’s more delicate and frarant side. More a pussy-cat than The Beast of Dufftown, and that’s no bad thing.

  • Producer’s Notes

    • NOSE

Super dense and rich, with touches of floor polish and much more of the waxy, earthy, meaty element seen in the previous examples. This has real elegance and complexity – and little intrigue. There is an added oiliness which you only get from mature whiskies. This in turn moves into varnish, leather oil, wood resins and even a touch of dubbin. The sensation is like being in some ancient, mysterious, library. There are dried fruits, a touch of scented wood, fir trees, cedar, Moroccan leather, slightly foxed books, floor polish, and some ink. It grows in the glass, moving towards chanterelle mushroom/cep mushroom even some of the wax crayon also seen on the 12-year-old. Huge, highly complex and contemplative.

    • BODY

      Robust and rich. Palate clinging.

    • PALATE

The mature depth seen on the nose comes immediately into focus, but before it goes towards the dark there’s a refreshing lift of aromatic and overripe fruits (quince especially) and a touch of spiciness. It then expands as the fruits dry and the oils start to coat the tongue. The meaty element comes in quickly here, full-on grunt with animalic edges, cured leather and light bitter notes that bring to mid nutshell, espresso crema, damson jam, cacao nibs all balanced with some hedgerow berry fruits meaning that the back palate has a brighter lift than you might expect from something which is so dense and meaty (think of a berry sauce with venison). As it develops so this back palate shows more roasting tin elements, some bark. It continues to extend into dried fruits.

    • FINISH

Quite dense. It carries on seamlessly from the progression seen on the palate with liquorice and dried fruit.
