Scotch Whisky Auctions “134th closes this Sunday!” – Scotch Whisky News

134th Closes This Sunday

Our 134th auction is now well underway and bidding has begun in earnest.  Here are a few fantastic bottles which might have slipped under your radar this month.

Glen Grant 1959 Samaroli

This is a fantastically rare bottling of Glen Grant 1959 from celebrated Italian independent bottler Samaroli.  Samaroli bottlings are prized in general, but older examples like this are always coveted. Rich in colour and highly rated by whisky afficionados internationally this bottle is definitely one to keep your eye on in the current auction.

Glenlivet 80 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail Generations with Sample Set

With thousands of bottles every month in our auctions we’ve seen it all, but even for us it’s rare to get a bottle as special as this.  The oldest whisky ever produced when first released this fabulous Glenlivet was distilled way back in 1940 and spent a remarkable 80 years in cask before finally being bottled.  Expensive sure, but a thing of rare beauty and unrivalled exclusivity.

Laphroaig Over 12 Year Old 80º Proof Cadenhead’s

Another older bottling this one, a tremendous Laphroaig Over 12 Year Old 80º Proof Cadenhead’s.  Hailing from the era of Cadenhead’s still being based in Aberdeen this bottling is most likely from the 1960’s and constitutes a piece of Scottish distilling history, marking a time before one of Scotland’s most distinguishged independent bottlers decamped to their current home of Campbeltown.

Macallan 1949 50 Year Old Millennium

We have not one but two magnificient whiskies distilled in the forties this month, and this Macallan 1949 50 Year Old Millennium is a tremendous specimen indeed.  Bottled in 1999 to celebrate the millenium this incredibly rare liquid is contained in an elegant hand-made Caithness decanter and is a marriage of three of the rarest Spanish sherry oak casks.

Whisky.Auction reunites historic John Walker & Sons records with the Diageo Archive – Scotch Whisky News

Whisky.Auction reunites historic John Walker & Sons records with the Diageo Archive

The world-famous Diageo Archive is home to a new piece of Johnnie Walker history thanks to the work of auction house Whisky.Auction and willing donator Andrew Welford.

An historic ledger detailing the transfer of shares in the John Walker & Sons company during World War II was brought to the team at Whisky.Auction by Mr Welford who was looking for advice on the book’s significance and whether it was of value to anyone. Eagle-eyed auction director Isabel Graham-Yooll recognised the historic importance such a record and knew the value this could bring to the Diageo Archive.

She explains: “This is one of those artefacts that holds so much value to a company archive, but little value to an individual, and so it felt right to reunite the ledger with the company owners. We often see old documents and labels from private individuals coming up at auctions and sometimes they simply need to find the right home rather than make money.”

Diageo Archive Manager Christine McCafferty comments: “I was so pleased that this book has been reunited with our Archive collection for John Walker & Sons, which is our pride and joy. I cannot thank Andrew enough for his kind donation and Isabel for seeing the value of having items like this kept within the business which created them. It helps us to build a full picture of our story to date, and we certainly hope to find some interesting stories buried in the pages.”

The ledger was delivered to the Diageo Archive by Andrew Welford who, alongside Isabel Graham-Yooll, was given a tour of the archives and saw the book laid down in its new home.

Scotch Whisky Auctions “The 134th Auction is now Live!” – Whisky Auction News

Our 134th auction is now up and running with a veritable feast of special drams available.  To ease your scrolling burden we’ve taken the liberty of picking out a few highlights from this month’s offerings.

Ben Nevis 1926 63 Year Old 75cl

Described by the distillery as the “peak of their achievement” this Ben Nevis 1926 63 Year Old 75cl is a bona fide collector’s item and will be highly coveted.  After a whopping 63 years in cask the angels had greedily devoured most of the whisky by time it came to be bottled, leaving a miserly 96 bottles.  This, however, has only increased the exclusivity of this marvelous dram from the rarest of casks.

Macallan 52 Year Old 2018 Release 75cl

Another old-timer this one, the Macallan 52 Year Old 2018 Release 75cl.  The rather flowery description from Macallan exclaims this expression to be “an outstanding example of how perfect harmony can be created through the mastery of wood and spirit”, and who are we to disagree?  An extraordinary dram for sure, and a credit to any collection.

Highland Park 21 Year Old Single Cask ‘Best Spirit in the

An unusual one now, the Highland Park 21 Year Old Single Cask ‘Best Spirit in the World’ Celebration Bottling.  This one-off expression was bottled in celebration of Highland Park 18 Year old being awarded best spirit in the world in 2005 and given to Highland Park staff.  This particular bottle was originally gifted to ex-Highland Park Whisky Maker Max McFarlane himself, as evidenced by the accompanying hand-signed letter.  One for the Orkney afficionados amongst us.

SMWS 27.40 Springbank 1964 31 Year Old

Finally, a rare find from the vaults of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the SMWS 27.40 Springbank 1964 31 Year Old.  A maiden showing at auction for us this one, and a mighty fine bottle it is too.  Distilled before the moon landing and bottled over 3 decades later this is a magnificent example of whisky-making from arguably Campbeltown’s biggest hitting distillery. We’re lucky to have some absolutely fantastic bottles in the auction this month, but don’t despair if you’re looking for something that won’t break the bank as there are plenty of bargains to be had too.  Happy bidding everyone and best of luck in the auction!

Bourbon Community Joins Forces To Benefit Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the Bourbon Crusaders charitable organization and Bourbon curator Fred Minnick are joining forces again, this time to support recovery and rebuilding efforts from the catastrophic flooding in Eastern Kentucky.

The Kentucky Bourbon Benefit will feature an online auction of exclusive private barrel selection experiences, rare and vintage spirits, and unique tasting and tourism offerings from Kentucky’s signature distilling industry and hospitality and charitable partners.

“Kentucky’s Bourbon industry was there for our Western Kentucky families following the tornadoes, making the single largest donation to that relief fund – and now I am proud to see this industry stepping up once again to support our Eastern Kentucky families affected by the devastating flooding,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.

“I know this will make a tremendous impact for our people and I am grateful for the continued support.”

The partnership raised about $3.4 million in December during a similar auction to help ease suffering and restore hope for residents of Western Kentucky whose communities were ravaged by a tornado outbreak.

“We prayed that we’d never have to get this group together again in the face of disaster, but our friends, families and neighbors in Eastern Kentucky are braving through unspeakable tragedy and devastation,” KDA President Eric Gregory said. “It’s our duty as a signature industry to help.

“We were so impressed and humbled by the outpouring of support for Western Kentucky, and we hope that Bourbon aficionados and bidders show the same unparalleled generosity for the thousands of Eastern Kentucky residents who desperately need our assistance.”

The online auction will begin Thursday, Aug. 11, at noon EST and run until Sunday, Aug. 21, at 11 p.m. EST.  Go to www.kybourbonbenefit.com to view auction items and bid. Westport Whiskey & Wine in Louisville is coordinating collection and distribution of donated items.

All proceeds will go directly to the state’s official Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund to assist those impacted by flooding.  The website to learn more or make a donation is https://secure.kentucky.gov/FormServices/Finance/EKYFloodRelief.

RJ Sargent, President of The Bourbon Crusaders, said, “The core purpose of the Bourbon Crusaders is to make a difference in the lives of others, and once again the state we love so much needs our help.

“When the tornadoes hit Western Kentucky last year, we joined the KDA and Fred Minnick to help raise over $3 million from our generous supporters. Now with the recent flood disaster, many more Kentuckians have had their lives upended. We are joining forces again and hope our friends will step up, too. The Bourbon community sticks together.”

Minnick said, “I wish we didn’t have to do this. But the Bourbon community deeply feels for their neighbors in Eastern Kentucky, as we did for the Western Kentucky tornado victims, and we will do everything within our power to ease the situation for the flood survivors.

“This is about our friends, family and neighbors. We must be there for them.”

Chris Zaborowski, owner of Westport Whiskey & Wine, said, “We were heartbroken to see the devastation brought to Eastern Kentucky with the recent flooding. We knew we wanted to team up with the KDA again to help raise the much-needed funds for our fellow Kentuckians.”

Gregory said many KDA members are once again offering private barrel experiences where Bourbon enthusiasts can personally taste and select their own one-of-a-kind barrel. Each barrel usually yields 150-200 bottles depending on age and proof.

Whiskey aficionados with the Bourbon Crusaders are raiding their collections and donating dozens of limited edition and single barrel expressions of Bourbon, rye and Scotch whiskies. Distillers also are donating rare bottles that disappeared from retailer’s shelves long ago.

Minnick, a best-selling author and expert on all things Bourbon, is using his renowned distilling and celebrity connections to reap a treasure trove of bottles, private experiences and memorabilia to fulfill any whiskey lover’s dream.

Kentucky distillers also are sending tanker trucks and totes of fresh water to Eastern Kentucky, along with contributing thousands of dollars to organizations and relief funds involved in the cleanup and recovery.

“We deeply appreciate the support of all our member distilleries and friends with the Bourbon Crusaders, Fred Minnick and the team at Westport Whiskey & Wine for their partnership in helping our fellow Kentuckians,” Gregory said.

“Bourbon is America’s native spirit and Kentucky is its birthplace. It’s our honor and obligation to step up and help our fellow Kentuckians in times of need. Thank you to everyone who is helping in the recovery and rebuilding efforts, and please continue praying for our beloved Commonwealth and its people.”
