Diego Lanza, Bonhams Whisky specialist said: “These bottles are part of Bowmore’s legendary 1964 trilogy (the third was matured in Oloroso casks).1964 is widely considered to be the distillery’s Wonder Year and these two single malts certainly bear that out. They were matured in the Number 1 vaults at Morrison’s Bowmore Distillery’s – the oldest in Scotland and the only vaults below sea level. Each release was restricted to 300 making them scarce and very desirable to collectors.”

Sotheby’s to Offer The Timeless Whisky Collection – The Highest Value Whisky Collection Ever Offered in a Single Auction in the US

The Highest Value Whisky Collection Ever Offered in a Single Auction in the US:

Sotheby’s to Offer The Timeless Whisky Collection

Featuring 30 Bottles Exceeding 50 Years of Age and Over 50 Magnums,

Led by The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection (est. $400,000-580,000)

NEW YORK, 8 SEPTEMBER 2022 – Amid the surge in demand for collectible whisky, Sotheby’s will offer The Timeless Whisky Collection – the highest value whisky collection ever to be presented in a standalone auction in the US. Comprising 497 lots, and with a pre-sale estimate of $1.6 to 2.1 million, the collection will be offered by Sotheby’s in New York on 23 September, with advance bidding open from Friday, 9 September.

Built over years by a dedicated collector in California, The Timeless Whisky Collection boasts thirty bottles that exceed 50 Years of age and a staggering fifty-three magnums, led by The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection (est. $400,000-580,000), which comes with a bespoke display platform and an exclusive experience offered directly from Lalique. Together with The Macallan, the collection is also represented by Bowmore, Highland Park, Glen Grant, Tamdhu, Glenfarclas, Fettercairn, Glen Mhor, Glenglassaugh, Loch Lomond, Linkwood and The Glenlivet.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirits, North America and EMEA, said: “The Timeless Whisky Collection showcases everything that collectors look for in whisky, from high value, highly aged bottles, to limited outturn and large format independent bottlings. When we first started working on this collection, we were stunned by its scale and value, so we knew we would have to do something special in bringing it to auction. This is why we chose to commission the exquisite burr oak display platform for The Macallan Six Pillars Collection and worked directly with Lalique to offer an experience. The appearance of a collection of this magnitude sets yet another benchmark in the whisky auction market.”

The collector himself welcomed Sotheby’s Whisky team to his house in Los Angeles to perform an inspection. While wishing to remain anonymous, he said: “Whisky has been a passion of mine for many years. While I collect many things, cars, watches and art included, whisky has always been something that has held my attention. I will be sad to part with this collection, but it felt like the time was right for it to find a new home. I have still held back some of my favorite bottles to enjoy over the next few years.”

A recent wave of highly aged whiskies at auction have commanded exceptional prices, as age in the world of whisky collecting has become synonymous with rarity, due to the fact that not many barrels in bonded warehouses in Scotland make it to the age of 50 due to the rate of alcohol evaporation.

Jonny Fowle explains: “Behind age statement is the vintage of a whisky, and, unlike rare wines, vintage is not always declared in whisky as it would require every element of the whisky that goes into the bottle to be from the same year of distillation. The Scotch Whisky industry’s tendency to vat whiskies from different barrels together to achieve their final assemblage means that often whiskies are built using casks from multiple vintages. This collection showcases a huge number of whiskies that proudly bear a single vintage statement.”

The sale of The Timeless Whisky Collection follows Sotheby’s offering of The Three Continents Collection of Scotch, Japanese and American whiskies. Presented across five separate auctions due to its scale, The Three Continents Collection became the second most valuable single owner collection of whisky ever sold by Sotheby’s – second only to The Ultimate Whisky Collection, which still stands as the most valuable whisky collection of all time at auction.*

The Macallan Six Pillars Collection with Bespoke Display Platform and Experience

Est. $400,000-580,000

The result of a unique collaboration between The Macallan distillery and renowned French crystal maker Lalique, The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection was released over a decade, between 2005 and 2016. An exclusive series of limited-edition decanters, each release represents the marriage and mastery of spirit distilling and artistic crystal craftsmanship. The collection celebrates the foundation stones upon which the distinctive character of The Macallan and the distillery’s creation of its rich spirit are built, including Exceptional Oak Casks and Curiously Small Stills. Every decanter encases some of the rarest and oldest Macallan single malt whiskies in the world, ranging between fifty and sixty-five years old.

For this auction and to celebrate the significance of The Timeless Whisky Collection, Sotheby’s commissioned a bespoke display platform made of Burr Elm by Anselm Fraser Design. The wood itself is from a Scottish Elm tree which fell at the beginning of the 1980s and had been used as the bar top in a private residence in Scotland for the last two decades, before being reclaimed and re-designed for this collection. The lot is also supported by Lalique, with an offer of a unique experience to the winning bidder and their guest to stay at Villa Rene Lalique in Alsace and dine at their two Michelin Star restaurant.

Notes

For The Timeless Whisky Collection, Sotheby’s worked closely with consultant Mark Littler to bring these whiskies to auction.

Sotheby’s has offered four significant single owner collections of whisky which have been sourced in America, the most notable of which was The Ultimate Whisky Collection, which went on to set the record for the most valuable collection of all time when sold in London in 2019.

The Ultimate Whisky Collection Parts I and II (October 2019 and October 2020) brought a combined total of £8.7 million ($11.2 million) – the most valuable whisky collection ever sold at auction.

The Three Continents Collection was sold over five auctions at Sotheby’s, beginning in December 2021. Comprising 1,455 lots (2,516 bottles), the collection was 97% sold by lot, with the $4.8 million total doubling the low estimate.

Scotch Whisky Auctions 135th Auction Ends Soon – Scotch Whisky News

Our auction is well and truly underway and we have witnessed a flurry of bidding so far on our lots this month.  In case you missed them here are a few more highlights from this month’s selection.

The Macallan 1950 Tales of the Macallan Volume 1 Lalique Decanter

Macallan have really outdone themselves with this fantastic expression distilled way back in 1950.  The Macallan 1950 Tales of the Macallan Volume 1 is presented in a beautiful Lalique decanter which is itself housed in a mightily impressive almanac.  If this is only the first release in the Tales of the Macallan series we can’t wait to see what the next installment brings.

Karuizawa 35 Year Old Sherry Cask #7417

A very old bottling from the now silent Japanese heavyweight, Karuizawa.  This Karuizawa 35 Year Old Sherry Cask #7417 has spent three and a half long decades maturing in a sherry butt which has imparted a rich dark colour and no doubt bags of flavour too.  Not one we see too often so make sure you take this chance to add this incredibly rare bottle to your collection.

Glenfarclas Family Cask 1954 – 2003 Trunk – 50 x 20cl

Finally, this Glenfarclas Family Cask 1954 – 2003 Trunk 50 x 20cl is a truly special lot.  Inside this stylish leather and wood trunk rests a marvelous collection of fifty 20cl Glenfarclas Family Cask bottles including a vintage from every year spanning 1954 to 2003. Also housed in the trunk are a selection of elegant Glencairn crystal pieces: four tasting glasses, four tumblers, and a water jug. To complete the extraordinary ensemble, there are four slate coasters and three leather-bound notebooks.  A fantastic time capsule of Glenfarclas distilling this imposing selection constitutes a complete collection in and of itself. With the auction drawing to a close on Sunday night now is the time to place your bids, and remember with over 7000 bottles in the auction this month if these fantastic highlights don’t grab you there will definitely be something that will.

Scotch Whisky Auctions ‘The 135th Auction is Now Up and Running!’

It’s that time of the month again, our 135th auction is now live with over 7000 fantastic bottles to choose from.  To save you some time we’ve picked out a few great bottles to highlight so without further ado…..

Macallan The Archival Series Folio 1-6 6 x 70cl

The Archival Folio Series from Macallan has been going from strength to strength in the secondary market of late.  This is your chance to snap up the full collection so far in one fell swoop.  With rumours abound of the Folio 7’s imminent release this is the time to get involved in this terrific set of releases.

Laphroaig 1980 27 Year Old Friends of Laphroaig Edition

A really fantastic dram this one from Islay heavyweights Laphroaig.  What better way to complement their notoriously smoky spirit than with the finest European oak Oloroso sherry casks.  One of only 94 bottles this an incredibly rare expression, bottled for the Friends of Laphroaig way back in 2007.

Linkwood 1956 60 Year Old Cask #20 Private Collection Gordon & MacPhail

If well-aged drams are your thing then look no further.  This gorgeous sherry bomb has spent 6 whole decades maturing in oak, which has imparted it with a deep dark colour.  Presented in an elegant decanter within a beautifully crafted bespoke display box this a is piece of unashamed luxury you won’t want to miss.

Macallan 1940 Rinaldi Import 75cl

Finally, we have a rather special Macallan 1940 Rinaldi Import 75cl. This truly stunning whisky was brought to the Italian market by famed Italian importers Rinaldi and is an excellent example of older style Macallan.  Only sold once previously through our auctions this is an incredibly rare expression which is sure to generate considerable interest amongst our discerning bidders.

I think we can all agree these are some fantastic expressions, but fear not if your wallet doesn’t agree because we have a marvelous range of drams to suit every pocket.  Happy bidding everyone and best of luck in the auction!

For the First Time Ever, The Glenturret Announces a 50 Years Old Release – Scotch Whisky News

For the First Time Ever, The Glenturret Announces a 50 Years Old Release

The first decanter of this highly limited, 50 Years Old expression, will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s as part of their ‘Whisky in Lalique’ auction

Crieff, 30 Aug 2022 – The Glenturret, Scotland’s Oldest Working Distillery, is proud to be releasing a spectacular 50 Years Old whisky, for the first time ever. As a distillery that is celebrated for specialising in small-batch, hand crafted whiskies, The Glenturret is known to have a genuinely scarce volume of whisky available, making this expression a greatly coveted release for any serious collector.

This historic new expression is being produced in an edition of just 150 bottles and will retail for £40,000. Housed in a striking, black crystal decanter produced by luxury French crystal house, Lalique, the exterior truly does the liquid within justice; black crystal – the rarest and most expensive crystal as it is the most difficult to produce, mirroring the craftsmanship and skill that went into producing such an extraordinary whisky. Designed by Marc Larminaux, Artistic and Creative Director at Lalique, barley is the inspiration for the decanter, represented through a tactile smooth and frosted finish on the motif, hand carved into the crystal by Lalique Craftsmen at its sole factory in Alsace which celebrates 100 years this year.

To mark this ultra-limited aged whisky being made available by The Glenturret, Sotheby’s will be auctioning off decanter number 1 of 150 during their Whisky in Lalique auction – the first whisky auction in history to exclusively offer Scotch in Lalique – running from 30th of August – 9th September. The high estimate lot price for this unparalleled bottle has been valued at £60,000 and comes in a bespoke black case with mother of pearl inlays.

This first decanter is the only one to be offered with a unique artwork, devised in collaboration with Method Studio who commissioned Scottish artist Matthew Draper for the project. Edinburgh based Draper works with his hands and his heart, responding emotionally to the landscape; instinctivelycommunicating the interplay between light, water, and land. On this occasion, the artwork titled ‘Loch Turret’ depicts the ancient freshwater Loch Turret that provides The Glenturret Distillery with the water that will become its whisky. This beautiful, one-off collector’s item has been created from pigments and inks that have been harvested by charring and burning the 50 Years Old cask staves – a variation on an ancient ink-making technique based on tannic reaction that is a nod to the values of provenance, prowess, and passion, which The Glenturret places at the heart of its whisky making.

The whisky was drawn from a singular remaining cask which was filled in 1972; it has spent the last five decades maturing in a refill Sherry cask which gives the whisky a beautiful antique oak colour.

Speaking about the release of the 50 Years Old, The Glenturret’s Managing Director, John Laurie, said, “We are so excited to be releasing a 50 Years Old expression for the first time ever. But to do it in partnership with the extraordinary creative talents, Lalique, Method and Matthew Draper, whose values both mirror our own philosophy when it comes to craftsmanship and the importance of making things by hand, is just incredible. The result is a rare and unique collector’s piece, and the work that has gone into this project really does justice to the remarkable liquid that can be found inside.”

Adding to that, Johnny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirts North America and EMEA said, “This 50 year old whisky from The Glenturret represents so much more than just the depth of history at this distillery. It is an opportunity to be the first to collect The Glenturret’s rarest bottles and the only opportunity to acquire the accompanying art piece made from the barrel itself. Glenturret has, thanks in no small part to both Bob Dalgarno and Mark Donald, quickly become the gastronomic centre of Scotland over the last year, and it is a real pleasure for Sotheby’s to be part of this landmark moment on their journey.”

The Glenturret 50 Years Old will be available online at www.theglenturret.com from 12th September 2022.

Home collections are available for those customers sending 10+ bottles or bottles to the value of £1000. Unfortunately this service is not available in London. Collections are limited and by appointment only. If you would like to attend please complete the form which can be found here. Please note deadlines apply for collection requests. It would be appreciated if bottles could be packed for uplift. In addition a submission form and label should be completed. Submission forms can now be completed via your main accounts page. A winner in our auction? We are now offering a delivery (to collection point) service to customers who are dropping bottles off for a future auction. This service is charged at £12 (inc VAT), optional loss and breakage cover is available.
