Scotch Whisky Auctions “The 137th Auction is now live!” – Scotch Whisky News

Our tremendous 137th auction is now live with over 8000 fantastic bottles to choose from.  That’s a lot of scrolling, so to save you some time we’ve highlighted a few special expressions to get you started.

Glenfarclas 1964 50 Year Old Single Cask #4727

This Glenfarclas 1964 50 Year Old Single Cask #4727 was bottled for the Asian market and is a spectacular specimen from one of Speyside’s most celebrated distilleries.  Five whole decades in a sherry butt has imbued this tremendous liquid with a dark, rich colour which is described by George S. Grant the Brand Ambassador as having “heavy sherry power”.  A fitting tribute to a special dram.

Macallan 72 Year Old Lalique Genesis Decanter

This is the quite remarkable Macallan 72 Year Old Lalique Genesis Decanter.  One of the oldest whiskies ever released by The Macallan this tremendous expression is presented in a bespoke crystal decanter made by famed French crystal producer Lalique and inspired by the architecture of Macallan’s new distillery complex.  Distilled in the 1940’s this uniquely rare release is a combination of age, beauty and superior craftsmanship.  Limited to only 600 bottles this is as rare as it is impressive and would make a fine addition to even the most exclusive of whisky collections.

Springbank 1966 Local Barley Cask #481 75cl

The Campbeltown region, once known as ‘the whisky capital of the world’, produces some of the finest single malts in Scotland.  This Springbank 1966 Local Barley Cask #481 75cl is one such dram.  Distilled way back in February 1966 this fine whisky was then held in a single bourbon cask before finally being bottled in February 1997.  The 1966 vintages from the Springbank Local Barley Series have steadily grown in legend and stature in the whisky collecting world, using only local malted barley and bottled at an impressive 55.1% ABV you’ll have a fight on your hands to get a hold of this one this month.

Macallan Fine & Rare 1970 32 Year Old

Finally, this is a rather special Macallan Fine & Rare 1970 32 Year Old.  Bottled in 2002 only 544 bottles of this distinguished old dram were produced from one of only two casks chosen that year to represent the absolute pinnacle of Macallan distilling as they entered the 1970’s.  As with all Fine & Rare releases this bottle represents not only a distillery but a time long since passed and a place of enviable beauty, offering the collector a chance to own a never to be seen again vintage of inimitable character. As well as these top-shelf drams we also have over 8000 other bottles to choose from and with the festive period now fast approaching we’d also like to point out that this auction is the last chance for our customers in the USA and further afield to get their bottles delivered before Christmas.  So if you are in the market for some Christmas drams then this is most certainly the auction to get involved in.

YAMAZAKI’S ONE-OFF SPECIAL BLEND JUNSHIN DEBUTS AT AUCTION IN BONHAMS NOVEMBER SALE – Auction Whisky News

YAMAZAKI’S ONE-OFF SPECIAL BLEND JUNSHIN DEBUTS AT AUCTION IN BONHAMS NOVEMBER SALE

Yamazaki Junshin

Estimate: HK$250,000-300,000

One of the only 200 bottles of Yamazaki Junshin privately released this year will lead Bonhams Fine and Rare Wine & Whisky sale in Hong Kong on 18 November 2022. The Junshin, which means “pure” and “true” in Japanese, is marketed as Yamazaki’s special one-off blend and presented as a gift to pay tribute to globally-renowned master blender Richard Paterson, for his long years of dedication to Japanese whisky. It was only available to Suntory’s VIP clients but is now going to the rostrum with an estimate of HK$250,000-300,000.

Formulated by Fukuyo Shinj1, Suntory’s Chief Blender, the Junshin takes its tasters down the memory lane of the distillery’s 100 years of whisky making. This whisky blends Mizunara malt, Spanish oak malt, and smoky malt aged for more than 20 years with super-long aged malt matured for more than 50 years in Japanese Mizunara casks:

  • Yamazaki Single Malt oldest Mizunara 1960/62 year-old, 1961/61 year-old and 1964/58 year-old.
  • Yamazaki Single Malt Mizunara 1999/23 year-old
  • Yamazaki Single Malt Spanish Oak 2001/21 year-old
  • Yamazaki Single Malt American Oak Puncheon Peated 2000/22 year-old

The label, made with the traditional Echizen washi paper, features the word Junshin by famous calligrapher Takeda Souun. This also marks the very first time calligraphy has appeared on the label of a Yamazaki bottle. The terms “pure” and “true” were chosen to describe the whisky-makers’ pure intent for their craft.

Diego Lanza, Bonhams Senior Whisky Specialist, commented: “Presented as a splendid gift not meant for the secondary market, the Yamazaki Junshin comprises the rarest and oldest – up to 62 years old – vintages ever produced by the Yamazaki distillery, which is something usually only found in their best products, such as the Yamazaki 50-year-old and 55-year-old. It is fair to say that the Yamazaki Junshin is as rare as these trophy bottles. We therefore expect a lot of interest from global collectors, not only because this will be the very first time it is offered to the public, but also ahead of Yamazaki’s 100th anniversary next year.”

Other whisky highlights include:

  • An incredible selection of more than 140 bottles of Karuizawa whisky led by: a complete 10 bottle-set of Karuizawa “Samurai” series (estimate: HK$850,000-1,000,000, imaged left); a single-owner whisky collection featuring a complete 36-bottle set of Karuizawa “36 Views of Mount Fuji” (estimate: HK$1,300,000-1,700,000); five rare bottles of Karuizawa 1965-over-50-year-old “Streams of Time” (estimate: HK$420,000-750,000); and a Karuizawa 1968 50-year-old “Aqua of Life” (estimate: HK$380,000-480,000).

  • The Scotch whisky section is highlighted by The Macallan 55-Year-Old in Lalique (estimate: HK$700,000-800,000, imaged right), The Macallan 1951-Cask #1541/1542 (estimate: HK$250,000-300,000), and a Bowmore 1965 52 year old (estimate: HK$240,000-300,000).

Sotheby’s to Offer Rare and Limited Edition 48 Year Old Single Malt Whisky from The Dalmore Distillery

Sotheby’s to Offer Rare and Limited Edition 48 Year Old

Single Malt Whisky from The Dalmore Distillery,

One of Only Three Bottles to be Created

Luminary No. 1 – The Rare Co-conceived by Kengo Kuma,

Designer of V&A Dundee and Master Distiller, Richard Paterson OBE

AUCTION OPEN FOR BIDDING FROM 1 TO 16 NOVEMBER

LONDON, 20 October 2022 – Launched in September, as part of a unique partnership between The Dalmore and V&A Dundee, The Luminary No.1 The Rare comprises a 48 Year Old Single Malt whisky housed in a striking sculpture designed by Kengo Kuma, the museum’s globally acclaimed architect.  Made of 48 hand-crafted diamond-shaped particles of Scottish Oak, Japanese Oak and polished metal to represent the number of years the whisky was nurtured by Master Distiller Richard Paterson OBE, the concept originated from a quest to discover a point of convergence between the complex skills of design and whisky-making.

Only three bottles and two sculptures have been created. One of these complete editions will be held at the distillery’s Highland home, the second is destined for auction at Sotheby’s in London on 16 November, with an estimate of £95,000-180,000 and bidding online from 1 November. A portion of the proceeds will to be donated to V&A Dundee. The third bottle will be released as part of a compendium release of the series in the years to come.

The sale will mark another milestone in the ongoing creative collaboration between Kuma and Paterson, which began in 2020 alongside the announcement of a four-year partnership with the museum to showcase and nurture exceptional design and craftsmanship. In 2021, The Dalmore donated £100,000 to V&A Dundee from Sotheby’s record sale of the one-of-one, exceedingly rare Decades No.6 Collection at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.

The original designer’s proof of the sculpture and replica bottle will be unveiled at a special event at V&A Dundee on Thursday 20 October, attended by the “Luminaries” Kuma and Paterson, who co-conceived “The Rare”, ahead of the piece going on public display from 22 October.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirits, North America and EMEA, said: “Working with The Dalmore always brings new surprises as their creativity seemingly knows no bounds. The Luminary is not simply an extremely rare bottle, but one of exceptional quality with an exquisite design lovingly put together by Richard and Kuma. This is Sotheby’s third partnership with The Dalmore in recent years and there is no better way to close out our 2022 auctions in London than with this marriage of whisky and design.”

Kengo Kuma, the only architect named in the prestigious TIME 100 in 2021, and Richard Paterson, awarded an OBE in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List for his services to whisky, together bring more than six decades of experience to the Rare, the embodiment of the pursuit of excellence over a lifetime.Kuma’s sculpture highlights the architect’s signature gentle interrogation and intimate understanding of natural materials and negative space, making use of metal and wood to frame the decanter at its centre. The oak diamonds mingle with light reflected from the shiny metal particles to achieve a sense of balance and harmony, in a nod to the art of the Master Distillers who create perfectly harmonious whisky flavours. The Scottish oak wood chosen for the project was sourced from a tree that had fallen on the banks of the River Tay where V&A Dundee sits.

Notes

An auction record for The Dalmore was achieved at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in October 2021 for a one-of-a-kind set of six vintage single malts direct from the distillery, sold for US$1.1 million.

In May 2019, The Dalmore L’Anima Aged 49 Years sold for £108,900 / $140,350. The exclusive, one of a kind bottling was created by The Dalmore and Massimo Bottura, Chef-Patron of Osteria Francescana, voted the World’s No. 1 Restaurant in 2016 and 2018.
