YAMAZAKI’S ONE-OFF SINGLE MALT WHISKY JUNSHIN EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATION AT BONHAMS HONG KONG SALE – Japanese Whisky News

YAMAZAKI’S ONE-OFF SINGLE MALT WHISKY JUNSHIN EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATION AT BONHAMS HONG KONG SALE

Yamazaki Junshin Single Malt Whisky

Estimate: HK$250,000-300,000

Sold for HK$750,000

HONG KONG. – One of the only 200 bottles of Yamazaki Junshin, privately released this year as a special one-off single malt whisky, sold today at Bonhams Fine and Rare Whisky sale in Hong Kong for HK$750,000, tripling its estimate.

The Junshin, which means “pure” and “true” in Japanese, is marketed as Yamazaki’s special one-off single malt whisky and presented to convey the essence of Japanese whisky and its industry to globally-renowned master blender Richard Paterson. It was only available to Suntory’s VIP clients and today’s sale marks its debut at auction.

Formulated by Fukuyo Shinji, Suntory’s Chief Blender, the Junshin takes its tasters down the memory lane of the distillery’s 100 years of whisky making. A unique combination of Yamazaki single malts aged in Mizunara oak casks, Spanish sherry oak casks, and peated malt matured in an American oak Puncheon, all aged for more than 20 years with some of the oldest Yamazaki single malts in existence matured over 50 and 60 years in Japanese Mizunara casks. The label, made with the traditional Echizen washi paper, features the word Junshin by famous calligrapher Takeda Souun. This also marks the very first time calligraphy has appeared on the label of a Yamazaki bottle. The terms “pure” and “true” were chosen to describe the whisky-makers’ pure intent for their craft.

Commenting on the result, Diego Lanza, Bonhams Senior Whisky Specialist, said: “The Junshin excited a great deal of interest before the sale, resulting in spirited bidding today. Once again, the market responds robustly to fresh materials of top quality. Junshin is the perfect embodiment of that and the top price it has achieved was well deserved.”

Other notable sales include:

Scotch Whisky Auctions 137th Auction Review – Auction Whisky News

Our 137th auction was a roaring success with high prices achieved on many of the best bottles that were up for grabs.  The bottle deadline for our next auction is this Friday (the 18th), so if you want your bottles to fly this month then now is the time to get them to us.

Balvenie 1962 56 Year Old DCS Compendium Chapter 5

This stunning Balvenie sold for a whopping £36,000 last month, which is as far as we can tell the highest price this bottling has ever achieved at auction.  A remarkable achievement which goes some way to suggesting the sustained value of whisky investing in spite of ongoing global economic uncertainty.

Macallan 72 Year Old Lalique Genesis Decanter

A truly incredible bottling, which sold for an astonishing £80,000 in our last auction.  A whisker away from taking the record of highest price ever achieved here at Scotch Whisky Auctions, this bottle is now making its away to its new (and very lucky) owner.

Scotch Whisky Auctions ‘Mid-Auction Highlights’ – Scotch Whisky News

Our 137th auction is progressing nicely, with bids coming in thick and fast.  With over 8000 bottles in this month we thought we’d take the opportunity to highlight a few fantastic bottles you might have missed.

Balvenie 1962 56 Year Old DCS Compendium Chapter 5

The Balvenie DCS Compendium Series has produced 25 amazing single cask whiskies in celebration of the life’s work of David Charles Stewart, the famed Balvenie Malt Master.  This is a 1962 vintage, a year holding special significance as it is the year in which David first started working at William Grant & Sons, at the tender of age of just 17.  This whisky is somewhat older, having spent an incredible 56 years aging since it first ran off the stills.

Yamazaki 1990 ‘The Cask’ Sherry Butt

Distilled way back in February of 1990, before the current boom in Japanese whisky prices, this Yamazaki sherry single cask is a terrific example of the best this celebrated Japanese distillery has to offer.  Aged in a Spanish oak sherry butt until bottling in June 2008 the whisky has taken on a dark and inviting hue, only adding to the smoothness we’ve come to expect from Yamazaki spirit.  One of only 506 bottles produced this is a rarely available expression of unparalleled quality, and we have not one but two in this auction so you’ll rarely haver a better chance of owning such an exclusive bottle.

Ardbeg 1974 Double Barrel

Contained within this leather Purdey & Sons Gun Case is a collection of treasures any self-respecting Ardbeg collector will covet.  Ardbeg have included two leather-stitched books, the ‘Ardbeg Double Barrel Story’ and the ‘Ardbeg Sampling Register’, an oak and sterling silver fountain pen and one of Scotland’s most prestigious silversmiths, ‘Hamilton & Inches’, has contributed with eight, sterling silver dramming goblets.  However, the whiskies are the real treasure here.  Drawn from two of Ardbeg’s finest casks, #3145 and #3524, these bottles are a fitting centrepiece to an exquisite piece of collaborative craftsmanship.

Glenfarclas 8 Year Old for Whisky Over Ice Festival 2022

Finally we have a tremendous ‘buy it now’ option in this month’s auction.  This 8 year old Glenfarclas was bottled by our sister company, The Real Drinks Company, for the Whisky Over Ice festival in Inverness in 2022.  Smooth and rich and everything we’ve come to expect from Glenfarclas this bottle represents terrific value as well as flavour, an ideal Christmas present with the festive period fast approaching.

As the current auction inches ever closer to its culmination on Sunday night, this is the time to start placing your bids if you haven’t already done so.  There is still time to win that bottle you’ve been coveting, so head over to the site and get your bids in.  Best of luck in the auction everybody.

First 200 casks from new Caithness whisky distillery available in exclusive sale – Scotch Whisky News

First 200 casks from new Caithness whisky distillery available in exclusive sale

— Whisky Hammer partners with Dunnet Bay Distillers to sell Stannergill Whisky casks –

Whisky fans will soon have the chance to own a piece of liquid history as Whisky Hammer prepares to exclusively sell casks containing the first drops of Dunnet Bay Distillers’ Stannergill Whisky.

The Caithness-based distillery, which produces the internationally renowned Rock Rose Gin and Holy Grass Vodka, has just announced a £4m expansion into whisky, partnering with Ellon-based Whisky Hammer for an early bird investment opportunity.

Just 200 casks are available, with investors able to pre-order a 250-litre cask for £4,750. The sale will go live at 12pm (GMT) on Monday 7 November, with Whisky Hammer expecting it to attract buyers from around the world.

This is the second time Whisky Hammer has exclusively sold casks to raise capital for a new distillery. In 2020, its first cask sale for 8 Doors Distillery in John O’Groats saw all 200 casks sell in less than 48-hours.

Daniel Milne, co-founder and managing director of Whisky Hammer, said: “Dunnet Bay Distillers is known for producing high-quality spirits, so we’re extremely proud to be representing the first casks of what we’re certain will develop into an incredible dram.

“Cask investment continues to grow in popularity, with those who purchase a cask of Stannergill Whisky able to see their whisky reach different milestones and develop its character and personality. It’s an exciting process to be part of.

“Our sale represents the only time the Stannergill Whisky casks will be available at this price, so we’re expecting there to be a lot of interest.”

Following purchase, buyers will be able to chart the progression of their cask as it matures into single malt whisky in a dunnage warehouse, where the fresh sea air blowing from Dunnet Bay will contribute to the creation of a smooth, mellow spirit.

Dunnet Bay Distillers expects the whisky to be lighter and fruitier than many traditional Scottish whiskies, influenced by the distinctive coastal location of the distillery.

Claire Murray, co-founder and co-director of Dunnet Bay Distillers, said: “We are excited to launch these early opportunities for people not only locally but across the world to get involved by buying a stake in the new whisky.”
