Glencairn Crystal proudly supports

second Distillers One of One Auction

The Scottish award-winning glassware company, Glencairn Crystal, is proud to support the second edition of the world’s most distinguished ultra-rare whisky auction; The Distillers One of One as a sponsor. The family-run business also created bottles and decanters for 11 of the 39 lots of extraordinary, never-to-be-repeated whiskies from distilleries around Scotland.

The auction will take place at Hopetoun House near Edinburgh on Thursday 5th October in partnership with Sotheby’s.

Internationally recognised by the industry as one of the finest crystal decanter and glassware manufacturers, Glencairn Crystal has over four decades of pioneering expertise in the industry, and its skilled team has hand-crafted nearly a third of all the beautiful vessels containing the whiskies up for auction; ranging from special bottlings to stunning one-of-a-kind bespoke decanters.

Handblown, exquisitely hand-engraved and decorated, many of these decanters hold incredibly unique whiskies from the oldest and rarest casks, spanning decades of whisky history, some over 50 years old. Several of the very special auction lots housed in Glencairn decanters are expected to raise tens of thousands of pounds, and in one case well over £100,000.

The Distillers’ Charity, the philanthropic arm of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, along with Sotheby’s organised the inaugural Distillers One of One auction in 2021 and its record-breaking hammer prices across over 40 different lots raised over £3 million. Over £2.4 million was donated to the Distillers’ Charity, principally to the Youth Action Fund, which aims to help disadvantaged young people in Scotland.

This year’s Distillers One of One auction will again raise money for The Youth Action Fund to transform the life chances of Scottish young people aged between 16 and 25. The Fund’s portfolio of six charity partners each bring their expertise and experience in achieving sustainable employability outcomes with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. These charities include; Aberdeen Foyer, Action for Children, ENABLE Works, FARE Scotland, Street League and Alcohol Education Trust.

Paul Davidson, Managing Director at Glencairn Crystal said:

‘Glencairn Crystal is proud to support the One of One auction and is delighted to have been asked to create so many of the unique bottles and decanters for the rare whiskies up for auction. We, at Glencairn, are keen to support the aims of the auction in as many ways as we can and wish them well raising money.’

Our 148th auction is now live! – Scotch Whisky Auctions News

A warm welcome everyone to our now live 148th auction!  Now the nights are fair drawin in this is the ideal time to pick up a few bottles of warming spirit to fortify you against the impending cold of winter.  With literally thousands upon thousands of bottles to choose from we have picked out a few interesting lots to get your started on your monthly whisky journey.

Macallan 1950 Tales of the Macallan Volume 1 Lalique Decanter

First up is a truly breath-taking expression the Macallan 1950 Tales of Macallan Volume 1 Lalique Decanter.  Before we even get to the tremendous whisky contained within it is worth pointing out the exquisite and bespoke Lalique decanter which is itself housed (Shawshank Redemption style) in a hefty leather-bound almanac, a weighty tome if ever there was one.  The whisky itself is a 1950 vintage Macallan which was finally bottled in 2021 giving it decades upon decades of maturity to call upon.  One of only 350 produced this is a must have for any Macallan collectors.

Tullibardine 2003 18 Year Old ‘Kibblecask 4’ Whisky Broker

Next we have a bottle which is available as a ‘Buy-it-Now’ on the site this month, the Tullibardine 2003 18 Year Old ‘Kibblecask 4’ Whisky Broker.  A thoroughly interesting dram it is punchy and herbaceous at the front of the palate, mellowing out into a warming sherried sweetness finish.  Priced at only £49 you’d be doing well to find an 18 year old single cask of similar quality in today’s market.

Springbank 12 Year Old 100° Proof 75cl

If only we’d all had a crystal ball, I don’t know what this Springbank 12 Year Old 100° Proof 75cl retailed at when it was available to buy, but rest assured it was a whole lot less than what it achieves now in the secondary market.  An old-style bottling like this is always a favourite here at SWA (what can I say, we are suckers for nostalgia), with its understated and elegant labelling, not to mention the tremendously well-balanced old-style whisky contained within.  If you collect Springbanks then this is a great opportunity to purchase an older style bottling still in excellent condition.

Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Card Three of Hearts

This quirky dram is the Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Card Three of Hearts.  Given there were only 17 years of whisky production at the now defunct Hanyu, their whisky stocks are not only attractively collectible but also limited and scarce.  The marketing masterstroke that is the Malt Card Series features a different playing card on every label, allowing people to easily remember their favourites and encouraging collectors to complete the full deck.  If you are missing the Three of Hearts, now is the time to strike!

Glasgow Distillery 2016 Single Cask #51 for Scottish Fire & Rescue Family Support Trust Centenary Bottle #1

And finally, we have the Glasgow Distillery 2016 Single Cask #51 for Scottish Fire & Rescue Family Support Trust Centenary Bottle #1. Distilled by Glasgow Distillery and drawn from an ex-bourbon cask this is bottle number 1 of 223 produced, with all proceeds from this sale being donated to the Scottish Fire & Rescue Family Support Trust.  As the oldest fire service charity in the UK the Family Support Trust has a proud tradition and commitment to providing care and support to serving and retired fire personnel and their families at times of greatest need, be it bereavement, illness or stress.  A noble cause if ever there was one, so we have high hopes the hammer price from this exclusive bottling will provide them with the funds they need to continue their excellent work.As always, we charge no sellers commission and only 10% buyers premium and we have some truly excellent drams in the auction this month, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We have a wide range of drams with something to suit everyone, so now is the time to wade in and start picking out your own personal favourites for your watchlist.  Best of luck to everyone in the auction, and as always………..don’t lose your bottle.

The Full Contents of the Second Edition of the World’s Most Distinguished Ultra-Rare Whisky Auction, the Distillers One of One, Revealed as Catalogue is Published Today, Ahead of Live Auction in Scotland on 5 October

Unveiled in Full: 39 Lots of Extraordinary Whiskies and Experiences with a Combined Value in Excess of £1 Million

Proceeds to be donated to The Distillers’ Charity, principally to the Youth Action Fund, dedicated to transforming the lives of young people in Scotland

“The highlight of the whisky calendar has finally arrived. The Distillers One of One represents all of the best elements of this industry: the community spirit, the rarity of the liquid, the creativity of the presentation and, above all, the charitable nature. A wiser man than me described this as being ‘The Whisky Olympics’. I cannot wait to be on the rostrum for this auction and see how we can develop this project into 2025.”
Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Spirits, Sotheby’s

LONDON, 14 SEPTEMBER 2023 – While a small selection of highlights from the second edition of the world’s most distinguished ultra-rare whisky auction, the Distillers One of One, was unveiled earlier this summer, now for the first time, the full scope of the forthcoming sale is revealed.

In total, a collection of 39 one-off, never-to-be-repeated Scotch whiskies have been created and donated from distilleries across the length and breadth of Scotland – to be offered at an auction taking place at Hopetoun House near Edinburgh on 5 October 2023. Also today, collectors will have the opportunity to place online bids in advance on each of the lots, which range in estimate from £2,000 upwards to £500,000. Prior to the sale, a selection of lots will go on view in Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries in London from 15 to 20 September.

“The Distillers’ Charity is delighted to be returning with the 2023 Distillers One of One. Through the generosity, commitment and collective endeavour of the Scotch Whisky Industry we hope to continue the momentum created by the Distillers One of One Auction in 2021. Through this collaboration, the Youth Action Fund was established to support disadvantaged young people in Scotland and this purpose has inspired yet another remarkable collection of the rarest and most collectible Scotch Whisky Lots. The generosity, creativity and commitment exhibited here makes you feel proud to be part of this great Industry.”
Jonathan Driver, Chairman, Distillers’ Ventures Limited

The highest value lot in the sale is Bowmore STAC 55 Years Old (est. £300,000-500,000), the oldest whisky ever released by the distillery. Showcasing over half a century of exquisite and skilled maturation, this single malt is housed in a striking and ground-breaking magnum-sized, 1.5 litre, hand-blown vessel made entirely of glass. The concept pays homage to Bowmore’s island home where its inspiring sea stacks became the starting point for the vessel’s design.

Equally striking is Brora Iris, an historic 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky presented in a 1.5 litre decanter, itself suspended within an imposing one-of-a-kind handcrafted stone sculpture (est. £200,000-400,000). This ultra-rare spirit, crafted by distillers at Brora five decades ago, is the oldest Brora single malt that has ever been bottled and will never be made commercially available. The stunning work of art represents the eye of a Scottish Wildcat, the highly elusive native of the Scottish Highlands that is the emblem of Brora Distillery.

From the Glen Grant Distillery comes The Visionary, an exceptional one-of-a-kind creation (est. £50,000-90,000). This rare single malt is aged 68 years and is one of the oldest whiskies to be released by the distillery. The whisky is presented in a singular hand blown battuto-cut magnum decanter, its innovative design capturing the suspension of the spirit within the glass structure as if it was itself a rare plant or flower. A precious stone Malachite stopper and base reflect the influence of copper, celebrating the tall stills which have shaped the spirit.

The Gordon & MacPhail Recollection Showcase embodies the company’s unique depth and breadth of single malt Scotch whiskies (est. £80,000-160,000). Housed in a handcrafted cabinet made of elm and oak, this singular offering features five uniquely engraved Glencairn decanters. Each contains an extremely rare one-off 70cl single malt from a distillery that has been lost or silent for decades – never to repeated.

A unique lot from Glenfarclas – Glenfarclas 55 Year Old Single Casks 1967 & 1968 – combines two vintages from the 1960s in one set (est. £20,000-30,000). Both casks are traditional Sherry Butts aged for 55 years which remain safely sleeping in the dunnage warehouses in Ballindalloch, with just the precious liquid for the lot removed.

AGA, by KANDOBLANC showcases a contrasting duo of rare Scotch whiskies (est. £50,000-100,000). Nestled within the exquisite vessel inspired by Japanese aesthetics and Italian craftsmanship is a delicate and refined Speyside malt and a flamboyant Highland malt. Distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2023, both whiskies are meticulously woven for the one-of-a-kind offering.

Littlemill Decennia is a one-off trio from Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery, featuring liquid from Littlemill’s 70s, 80s and 90s reserves (est. £20,000-30,000). The liquid is showcased in three bespoke 70cl Glencairn decanters – each bearing three delicate cuts in homage to three remarkable decades of whisky-making history – housed in a one-of-a-kind handmade cabinet.

The full list of lots, with estimates, is available to view here.

The inaugural Distillers One of One Auction took place in December 2021, supported by leading brands from across the Scotch Whisky industry, and raised £2.4m for charity of which £2.2m was granted to the newly created Youth Action Fund. The Youth Action Fund was established by The Distillers’ Charity to support disadvantaged young people in Scotland, transform their life chances, and empower them to create positive change in their lives and communities.
