Scotch Whisky Auctions “Our 167th auction is now live!” – Auction Whisky News

Here we go, not only have we seen actual real-life sunshine this week, but now we have yet another jam-packed selection of drams to peruse in our now live 167th auction!

We have a really great collection of whiskies and more to showcase this month, giving all you lucky people the opportunity to fill up those drinks cabinets in anticipation of yet more sunshine.  Or more likely drinking whisky indoors to avoid the rain but I digress.  With all the great drams available it is always hard to pick out just a few but pick a few we have.

Our first pick is a genuine rarity and bottle of supreme quality this is the Bowmore White 1964 43 Year Old 75cl.  Sitting alongside the coveted ‘Gold’ and ‘Black’ releases, this highly sought after Bowmore was filled into six bourbon casks then laid down to mature in the distillery’s famous No. 1 Vaults. Distilled way back in 1964 this tasty looking morsel was then left to mature for a whopping 43 years in Bourbon casks before finally being unleashed.

Next up we have a really interesting bottle, this is the Glenrothes-Glenlivet 1947 28 Year Old 26 2/3 Fl Oz.  This must be one of the oldest official Glenrothes bottlings kicking about given its’ 1947 vintage, and it is in remarkable condition considering it was bottled about half a century ago.  And not only that but it also achieved a highly respectable 86 points from the lads over at whiskyfun.com.  For the many among us who enjoy older bottlings for the weird and wonderful taste profiles they offer this little gem is surely a must-have.

Next up is a bottle from one of the most prolific indie bottlers out there, this is the SMWS 27.10 Springbank 1965.  Older Springbank bottles from SMWS are incredibly hard to come by given they were mostly happily drank at their time of release which for this bad boy was back in 1987.  Weighing in at a rather hefty 60.9% ABV this whisky packs one hell of a punch, and offers one lucky punter the chance to try some of Campbeltown’s finest the way it used to be made.

Last but most certainly not least is a bottle from another indie heavyweight, this is the Mortlach 1957 Private Collection Gordon & MacPhail.  Founded in 1895, Gordon and MacPhail has been bottling single malt whiskies for 120 years and by the 1950s it held the largest range of bottled malt whiskies in the world.  This deliciously dark dram from The Beast of Dufftown was distilled in 1957 and bottled fifty years later in 2007, so has some serious ageing under its belt.  One of only 514 bottles produced this is a bottle for the serious connoisseur.

If these beauties are a tad out of your price range then fear not for we have an enormous selection of drams to suit every budget on offer this month, so now is the time to delve into this month’s offerings and start building that watchlist.  Best of luck to everyone in the auction, and as always………..don’t lose your bottle.

  • Craft Producer of the Year 2025 at both the Icons of Whisky & Icons of Whisky Ireland Awards

  • A coveted spot in the Top 50 Most Admired Whiskies in the World, ranking as the second highest Irish distillery on the list

We have released many wonderful Barántúils this year which we have been delighted to see being opened and enjoyed all across the world. This year saw the release of our first ever 5 year old whiskey, along with the launch of our Sagaland Series and a collaboration with The Irish Whiskey Collection at the Duty Free in both Dublin and Cork Airports. We also worked with some fantastic off-sales across Ireland such as Green Acres in Wexford, in which our Barántúil was finished in a bespoke Chambolle Musigny Ex-Pinot Noir Wine Cask from Domaine Bruno Clair.

So what’s next? We have a very exciting few months ahead with many more Barántúil releases coming your way! To kick us off, we are absolutely delighted to announce that a very special collaboration with none other than the iconic Temple Bar in Dublin is soon to be released via The Irish Whiskey Reserve. This particular whiskey spent its entirety in an Ex-Pedro Ximénez Sherry Cask, but more information on this one coming very soon!  We will also be releasing the next instalment of our much anticipated Sagaland series and we can’t wait to share this with you all, as you know, this chapter of our Barántúil is very special to all of the Killowen team.

And just in case you missed our social media campaign, we have an exclusive auction happening from April 30th – May 4th with Irish Whiskey Auctions. This particular auction will feature some Killowen gems from the archives of none other than the man himself, Brendan Carty. Be sure to sign up as it’s one not to be missed!

APRIL 2025 AUCTION HALFWAY THROUGH!

We thought it would be a great time to take a closer look at a few little belters like this; Distilled by the now closed Speyside distillery Dallas Dhu in 1975 then bottled in 2007 by Elgin independent bottling supremos Gordon & MacPhail.

Following the success of the Rare Malts bottlings by Diageo, annual releases of stock from their closed distilleries were then made available in 2002. These rare releases proved to be incredibly popular given the age and rarity of the whisky from these closed distilleries, none more so than from the Iconic Highland distillery Brora. This particular expression was released in 2017, the last of these incredible bottlings to be released. This is bottle number 290 of only 3,000 bottles.

Or how about this pair of Highland Park expressions, both beautifully presented in solid Oak housing, in contrast to the striking but unusual coloured bottles, showcasing the two natural elements they’re named after, ‘Fire’ and ‘Ice’.

Distilled in 1974 and then aged for 28 years before being bottled at natural Cask strength in 2002, this rare bottling of Glen Moray was signed by distillery manager Ed Dodson. Bottle number 292 of only 676 bottles produced!

These are only a few of the old, limited and collectable bottles featured in our April auction, to view more wee gems visit clickwhiskyauctions.com. Register to bid. Remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it! Auction ends Sunday 20th April from 8pm BST.

New Auction Record for American Whiskey – Old Rip Van Winkle ‘Van Winkle Selection’ Sells for $125,000 – Auction Whisky News

NEW AUCTION RECORD FOR AMERICAN WHISKEY AT SOTHEBY’S

Bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle ‘Van Winkle Selection’ Sells for $125,000

Historic Result for the Only Bottle in Existence

NEW YORK, – A one-of-a-kind bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle ‘Van Winkle Selection’ Kentucky Bourbon Festival Master Distiller’s Auction 2007 shattered records at Sotheby’s today, achieving $125,000 and becoming the most valuable single bottle of post-prohibition American whiskey ever sold at auction.* Offered with an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000, this ultra-rare bottle captivated collectors with its unique provenance, likely containing whiskey from the legendary Stitzel-Weller distillery, and its historical significance as one of the highest-proof Van Winkle releases ever produced.

The bottle, which has not been seen in nearly 20 years, was originally created for the 2007 Kentucky Bourbon Festival and hand-bottled at full strength under the supervision of Julian Van Winkle. Its label, designed by Preston Van Winkle, and the glass, signed by Julian P. Van Winkle III and dated 9-15-07, add to its exceptional rarity and desirability.

Zev Glesta, Sotheby’s Whiskey Specialist, commented:This sale marks a defining moment in the history of American whiskey, underscoring the legendary status of Van Winkle bottlings and the continued strength of the fine and rare whiskey market. Bringing such a remarkable piece of American whiskey history to auction is a testament to the growing appreciation for the craft and heritage of American distilling.”

The sale of this bottle further cements Sotheby’s leadership in the spirits market, building on past successes with rare American whiskey, historic Scotch collections, and one-of-a-kind whiskey auctions. With today’s result, Sotheby’s once again demonstrates the increasing global demand for American whiskey and the unparalleled prestige of the Van Winkle name in the world of fine spirits.
