Macallan Lalique Six Pillars Collection Leads the way in Record Breaking Online Auction – Whisky News
Macallan Lalique Six Pillars Collection Leads the way in Record Breaking Online Auction
PERTH, SCOTLAND – Bottles from The Macallan Lalique Six Pillars collection have broken auction records after being sold in a recent auction by Whisky Auctioneer (www.whiskyauctioneer.com), achieving a collective hammer price across the four lots of £296,500.
This price surpasses the previous record from November 2018, when four bottles from the same series sold at auction for a collective hammer price of £272,000 according to Rare Whisky 101.
The Macallan Lalique Six Pillars Collection is one of the most exclusive and desirable ranges of whisky in the world. Featuring in the auction was the 50 Year Old, 55 Year Old, 57 Year Old and 60 Year Old. These lots prompted an enormous amount of interest and bidding activity from across the globe with over 140 bids placed across the four lots. The eventual winners were located in the US, Asia and the UK.
The bottles also played a contributing role in an even larger record being broken. With a total value in excess of £2.6 million, Whisky Auctioneer’s December Auction itself is the highest value online auction ever. Close to £850,000 of this £2.6million came from sales of bottles of The Macallan alone.
These records not only indicate the continuing global demand for buying and selling whisky on the secondary market but also the increasing use of online auctions as a means for private collectors and investors to access old, rare and iconic whiskies.
Iain McClune, director of Whisky Auctioneer, said: “We are beyond delighted to feature these exceptional bottles in our auction. They represent the absolute pinnacle of rare whisky collecting and investing.”
“Our most recent auction result illustrates that the very highest end of the secondary market, which was once the preserve of the traditional auction house and its attendees, is now accessible via online auction. A positive development that makes the buying and selling of whisky an easier and more straightforward process that is open to all.”
It was not just The Macallan that broke records either: Other record-breaking bottles sold within the same auction include the Hibiki Arita Decanter, that achieved a hammer price of £17,500 and the Bruichladdich 1960 Sherry Cask 100 Proof, that achieved a hammer price of £10,000.
It is not unusual for the Perth based company to see records broken in their monthly auctions however the large number witnessed in their most recent auction speaks of an exciting year ahead both for Whisky Auctioneer and the industry as a whole.
The next auction goes live on 25 January and will close on 4 February.

Happy New Year from Scotch Whisky Auctions!
New Year’s Greeting from the SWA Brand Ambassador, Kate Johnston.
‘It’s been a real joy to meet so many of you this year. My first six months in the job have been non-stop, but the welcome I’ve received has been nothing short of warm. Seeing the auction grow to just short of 10,000 bottles in November was quite astounding. A particular highlight of mine from 2018 was hosting our food and whisky provenance evening at Cafe Strange Brew, in Glasgow. Amazing food and amazing whisky!!
One really lovely part of my job is getting to meet so many of our lovely clients from across the country. We’re so grateful for all of you and from both Tam and the whole team we want to thankyou.’
So what’s new for next 2019?
‘Well we will have plenty to keep us busy with a few new schemes up our sleeves, as we creatively strive to make your experience better. I’ve quickly learnt we don’t like staying still at SWA, stagnation being somewhat of a forbidden word – that just makes it all that more exciting doesn’t it! Happy New Year One all!!’
Have you enjoyed using SWA this year? Why not tell the world and leave a wee comment on our Facebook Page (the link is at the bottom of this email). Alternatively, if you’ve got constructive comments we would love to hear them too. Drop us an email with the subject ‘2019 improvements’ to mail@scotchwhiskyauctions.com.

184 bottles of this 30-year-old Scotch whisky are available, priced at £1,470. To ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to own this piece of whisky and royal history, we are conducting a ballot.
The ballot will run until 27 January 2019, and you must enter before then for a chance to purchase one of the bottles. All proceeds from the sale will go to The Prince’s Foundation charity.
BONHAMS ONLINE WHISKY SALE LEADS WITH CERAMIC COLLECTION ARITA & KUTANI – Whisky News
BONHAMS ONLINE WHISKY SALE LEADS WITH CERAMIC COLLECTION ARITA & KUTANI
Hong Kong – Bonhams headlines its upcoming online Whisky sale in Hong Kong with a Hibiki-21 year old Ceramic Collection Arita & Kutani. Paying tribute to the art of traditional Japanese ceramic, Suntory release this limited edition every year in handmade ceramic bottles from the Arita and Kutani kiln containing Hibiki-21 year old whisky. It is a very rare opportunity to acquire a full set of the collection from the first release in 2001 to the latest in 2014. The collection includes 28 ceramic bottles and is estimated to fetch between HK$600,000 and HK$800,000.
Bonhams online sale will start on 24 December 2018 and end on 20 January 2019, and will feature a collection of 440 lots ranging from HK$3,000 to HK$600,000, offering a price point for all level of collectors.
The sale presents a Macallan Lalique-55 year old estimated at HK$500,000 – 650,000. This 55 year old Macallan in a Lalique decanter was released in 2007, with only 420 individually numbered decanters made available worldwide. Inspired by Lalique’s classic Paquerettes tiara perfume bottle, this decanter is a nod back to the designing power and influence of Rene Lalique in 1910. Made in varying amber coloured crystal to reflect The Macallan’s natural colour, the decanter stopper embodies Lalique’s mastery of crystal and is one of the most difficult colours for crystal makers to achieve.
Over 20 bottles of collectable single malts from the late legendary bottler Silvano Samaroli are featured in this sale including a bottle of Glen Cawdor-1964, one of 360 bottles and estimated around HK$80,000 – 110,000. Inspired by the reference to the Thane of Cawdor in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Silvano used the name for some of his bottlings without revealing the real distillery. According to his memory, it is believed to be a Springbank 1964.
Other notable highlights include:
- Macallan-1972 by S.Samaroli, one of 460; estimated at $50,000-70,000
- Yamazaki-1979-#RF1037, one of 294; ; estimated at HK$90,000-130,000

BUMPER YEAR FOR BONHAMS GLOBAL WHISKY DEPARTMENT – Whisky News
The Macallan Valerio Adami-1926-60 Year Old (left). Sold at Bonhams Edinburgh for £848,750, October 2018
Bonhams Fine Wine and Whisky departments have enjoyed a highly successful year with combined global sales of more than £15million.
Highlights included:
- Breaking the world record for a bottle of whisky sold at auction on three separate occasions. First in Hong Kong in May when a bottle of The Macallan Peter Blake-1926-60 Year Old sold for HK$7,962,500 (£751,703) only to be surpassed an hour later in the same sale by a bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami-1926-60 Year Old at HK$8,636,250 (£814,081). That record was, in turn, broken in Edinburgh in October by the £848,750 paid for another bottle of The Macallan Adam
- Setting a new world record for a bottle of Japanese whisky sold at auction – a bottle of Karuizawa-1960-52 Year Old The Dragon that sold for HK$2,450,000 (£231,035) at the Wine and Whisky sale in Hong Kong in May 2018.
- Selling the world’s most valuable hogshead cask – an American hogshead cask from Macallan Distillery, 1996-22 year old, which was bought for HK$3,430,000 (£342,271) – at the Fine Wines and Whisky Sale in Hong Kong in November.
Bonhams Head of Whisky in Edinburgh Martin Green added. “The world records were, of course, the highlights of the year but all our sales – both in Hong Kong and Edinburgh – performed consistently well. International demand for Bowmore, Glenfiddich and other expressions of the Macallan remained buoyant and whiskies from closed Japanese distilleries again proved particularly attractive to buyers in Asia.”
Whisky sales are held four times a year in Edinburgh and four time a year in Hong Kong.
