Port Ellen 12 Year Old / Queen’s Visit 1980

Thought to be the only official bottling of Port Ellen released while the distillery was active, this expression was produced to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the island on 9th August 1980. We are honoured to present at auction one of the most iconic whiskies ever produced.

3

Macallan 50 Year Old 2018 Release 75cl / US Import

Like all the great Macallan before it, this 50 year old was matured in only the finest handcrafted, hand-selected, sherry-seasoned European oak casks, all the way from the bodegas of Spain.  Allowed to interact for five decades with this wood, it is sure to have an incredible rich and full flavour.

4

Bowmore 1964 ‘Black Bowmore’ Trilogy

An icon of the whisky world, it’s hard to fathom where whisky collecting would be today without the Black Bowmore. This month we have each of the three releases of the renowned series combined as one lot. What a great chance to own some of the most important spirit to ever grace our beloved industry.

5

Karuizawa Single Casks

Karuizawa produced outstanding whiskies, many of which have received international acclaim. They have released almost 300 single casks which are becoming increasingly rarer and rarer as demand soars. This month we have a fantastic selection of some of their best bottlings.

6

Macallan Genesis

Genesis is a special and highly limited release from the recently revamped Macallan distillery. Released in August 2018, the special edition bottling commemorates the unveiling of the brand new Macallan distillery just two months prior

7

A.H. Hirsch 1974 Reserve 16 Year Old Bourbon

This month we feature two special lots which are the same spirit bottled under different owners at different times. The blue wax seal indicates the original bottling in the early nineties by Julian Van Winkle III. The other is a Buffalo Trace bottling done in 2003.

Record-breaking Laphroaig Fetches £61,000 at Auction

PERTH, SCOTLAND – A standout Samaroli classic whisky – the Laphroaig 1967 15 year old Sherry Wood – has been purchased for a record-breaking £61,000 hammer price in an online auction held by Whisky Auctioneer (www.whiskyauctioneer.com).

This exclusive, rare and highly-regarded Laphroaig 1967 attracted a huge amount of interest with over 65 bids being placed from across the globe with the eventual winner coming from Germany.

The £61,000 hammer price it achieved is up from the last auction sale of a Laphroaig 1967 Samaroli in 2014 for £5,700 (according to rare whisky analysts Rare Whisky 101)– representing an over 240% annual increase in value.

This follows on the heels of the record-setting Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet that was snapped up for a £51,611 hammer price in Whisky Auctioneer’s auction last month.

One of only 720 bottles produced, the Laphroaig 1967 Samaroli 15 Year Old is also signed by Silvano Samaroli himself making this an even rarer bottling and a truly one-of-a-kind whisky collectible.

The Laphroaig 1967 is highly regarded and finds itself a hair’s width away from being top of Whiskybase.com‘s top 1000 whiskies of all time, currently stood just below Samaroli’s other masterpiece the Bowmore 1966 Bouquet.  Serge Valentin of WhiskyFun.com has given the Laphroaig 1967 98 points, one of his highest scored reviews of all time.

Sean McGlone, director at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “The Laphroaig 1967 Samaroli was sure to draw a huge amount of attention and interest.  Chances are few and far between to not only get a hold of this whisky widely regarded as incomparable in taste, but with the added uniqueness of the bottle being signed by the legendary Silvano Samaroli himself.”

“Following on the back of the record-breaking Samaroli from our auction last month – the Bowmore 1966 Bouquet – we are seeing an increase in demand in the market for rare and sought-after whiskies, particularly these admired bottlings from Samaroli.”

The auction is the latest in a growing line of rare treasures to be sold by Perthshire firm Whisky Auctioneer which specialises in auctioning fine, old, rare and collectable whisky. Over the past two years, Whisky Auctioneer has broken auction records on a monthly basis, and in addition to the recent Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet sold for £51,611, standout lots include a rare collection of Corti Brothers whiskies for £52,865, and the world’s largest known collection of rare and collectable Karuizawa whisky from Japan for £770,000.

The next auction goes live on 24 August and will close on 3 September.

Scotch Whisky Auctions “End of auction and office opening hours” – Scotch Whisky News

AA SWA

A quick note about our auction endings (For the benefit of our first-time bidders, this is how it works):

From 7pm UK time the software starts monitoring activity on the site, and at an unspecified time it will shut down the auction. This feature has been designed to beat sniper software.

The auction does not end at 7pm, only the end process begins then. In our experience it is some time after 8.30pm before the auction ends, so there is no need to rush to bid dead on 7pm

If you’re looking to collect the bottles from the office please note that our collection times are 10am – 5pm, due to licensing laws.

We hope you have enjoyed our latest auction.

Kind regards from Glasgow

VERY RARE YAMAZAKI-50 YEAR OLD LEADS BONHAMS WHISKY SALE IN HONG KONG

First edition of Yamazaki-50 year old. Estimate: HK$1,800,000-2,400,000/£175,000-235,000

A rare first edition of Yamazaki-50 year old leads Bonhams Whisky Sale in Hong Kong on Friday 17 August. It is estimated at HK$1,800,000-2,400,000/£175,000-235,000.

The oldest expression from the famous Japanese distillery, the whisky was matured in casks made from mizunara (Japanese Oak) before being bottled and released in 2005. Only 50 bottles were produced, making it one of the scarcest Japanese whiskies.

Bonhams Head of Fine Wine and Whisky in Hong Kong, Daniel Lam, said: “The Yamazaki-50 year old is a very rare and special whisky, and I am expecting a lot of interest from collectors.  It leads a sale which offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire the finest of Japanese whiskies and some of the most sought-after names in Scotch whisky such as Macallan, Port Ellen and Ardbeg.”

Other highlight of the sale, which features more than 620 bottles, include:

  • More than 40 bottles of Yamazaki including the Yamazaki-35 year old (HK$350,000-500,000/£34,200-48,400); and the Suntory-Rolling Stone 50th Anniversary (HK$280,000-360,000/£27,300-35,200).
  • A bottle of Hibiki-Arita-35 year old, produced to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Japanese porcelain production. Only 150 bottles were released (HK$100,000-140,000/£9,800-13,700).
  • The Karuizawa Sumo Trio Distilled in 1981, 1982 and 1983, framed within a crafted humidor designed by Ukiyo-e artist Hachisuka Kuniaki. Only 340 sets were produced (HK$90,000-120,000/£8,800-11,700)
  • A selection of the finest Macallans. Bottles include Macallan Fine & Rare-1937-37 year old (HK$260,000-320,000/£25,400-31,200), and Macallan Fine & Rare-1946-56 year old (HK$250,000-300,000/£24,400-29,300)
  • A vertical collection of Port Ellen Annual Release. 17 bottles from 2001-2017.  (HK$280,000-360,000/£27,300-35,200)
