COMPLETE SET OF GLENFARCLAS FAMILY CASKS LEADS BONHAMS WHISKY SALE IN EDINBURGH – Scotch Whisky News

COMPLETE SET OF GLENFARCLAS FAMILY CASKS LEADS BONHAMS WHISKY SALE IN EDINBURGH

43 BOTTLES ESTIMATED AT £140,000-180,000

FIRST TIME AT AUCTION

Bottles from The Family Casks 1952-1994 by Glenfarclas. Estimate: £140,000-180,000

A complete set of 43 bottles from the legendary Glenfarclas Family Casks leads Bonhams Fine Whisky in Edinburgh on Wednesday 4 March. Estimated at £140,000-180,000, this is the first complete set ever offered at auction.

Glenfarclas launched The Family Casks in 2007 in an edition of 43 bottles containing whisky distilled every year between 1952-1994 and have released bottles periodically ever since. The whiskies have proved very popular particularly with people celebrating special events like birthdays or wedding anniversaries. The distillery is no longer releasing bottles from some years e.g. 1952 and 1953 because the supply is exhausted.

Bonhams Whisky specialist in Edinburgh Martin Green said: “The Glenfarclas Family Casks presents a wonderful range of tastes, colours and aromas.  The complete, original 1952-1994 set has never been seen at auction before and with some years no longer in production, the sale offers a unique opportunity to acquire a collection that will be increasingly difficult to build up in any other way.”

Online Platform Goes Against the Grain with Whisky Cask Auctions – Scotch Whisky News

The third Cask 88 Online Cask Auction, ‘Against the Grain’ will open on Friday 31 January 12 noon GMT, and end 10 days later on Sunday 9 February 5pm GMT. When the platform launched in June 2019, it was the first and only online platform dedicated to auction of whisky casks. You can view the details here

Scottish whisky broker and award winning independent bottler Cask 88 have announced their third auction, bidding for which opens at the end of the month. When the platform launched in June 2019, it was the first and only online platform dedicated to auction of whisky casks. The third Cask 88 Online Cask Auction, ‘Against the Grain’ will open on Friday 31 January 12 noon GMT and end 10 days later on Sunday 9 February 5pm GMT. Seven lots are featured, representing a range of diverse spirit and cask types, including two casks of grain whisky, two casks of new make spirit from Isle of Arran distillery and malt whiskies maturing in ex-Bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-rum casks. The oldest whisky in the collection is a 45 year old grain whisky cask from Invergordon distillery. All the liquid is distilled and stored in Scotland.

“Our third cask selection showcases the diversity of the whisky cask market,” said Head of Content Sam Laing. “Whisky enthusiasts are not limited by what the major producers choose to bottle and put to market. Whether they love well-matured grain whisky, malts with an uncommon cask finish, or they simply want to observe a delicious new spirit as it matures and develops over time, cask ownership gives them the opportunity to find something unique, and then to put their own stamp on it.”

“We’ve had a great response so far to our cask auctions,” said Cask 88 Director, Patrick Costello. “Our public platform offers full transparency, and an innovative way for our clients to engage with the whisky cask market. It has even given a boost to our traditional sales, as auction visitors, curious to learn more, approach us for our weekly cask list. We look forward to welcoming more sellers and buyers to the platform in the coming months and years.”

The Cask 88 Online Cask Auction platform only lists casks from private individuals, with careful consultation with the seller. Lots are always publicly visible on the Cask 88 website, and each cask undergoes a verification process to confirm ownership and provenance before going online. All casks over three years of age must have been regauged within the last 18 months to be considered for the auction. A sample from each cask is reviewed by the Cask 88 in-house team, who, among them, have sat on tasting panels for, and advised, top names in whisky, such as the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the Waldorf Astoria, the Peninsula Shanghai and The Scotch Whisky Experience.

Potential bidders will need to register before they can view active auctions and receive authorisation to bid. The final hammer price includes the cost of the cask and the first two years of storage. All other costs related to storage, removal from bond, insurance, regauging, sample withdrawal, transportation and bottling will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. This includes VAT and any UK excise duty. A buyer’s commission of 10% is added to the hammer price of all lots. Cask 88 accepts payment via bank transfer/BACS and all major credit and debit cards.

Once they have made their purchase, buyers will be eligible for the same level of service as provided to all clients of Cask 88. Casks are stored in a bonded warehouse in Scotland, and after purchase, clients are welcome to visit their cask and to have samples delivered to them. If they choose to bottle the cask down the line, Cask 88 offers packaging and labelling design services and supports clients throughout bottling and export of the final product. To register to bid and view active lots, visit http://auctions.cask88.com/

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR THE WORLD’S FIRST LIVE ONLINE WHISKY AUCTION DEDICATED TO CASKS – Scotch Whisky News

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR THE WORLD’S FIRST LIVE ONLINE WHISKY AUCTION DEDICATED TO CASKS

Cask Trade is to host the world’s first, live, online only auction dedicated to casks of whisky later this month but the the last chance for people to enter casks in the auction is fast approaching on Friday 10th January.

Sales of whisky have raised record-breaking amounts, most recently £7.6M was raised at a Sotheby’s auction in London including several casks and an auction in Hong Kong in November raised £441,000 for a Cask of Macallan 1989.

World First

In an historic, world first, Cask Trade will host the first ever live, online auction for casks on 22nd January 2020.

Auctionyourcask.com will allow private owners and investors to sell their cask to independent bottlers and other investors all around the world.

A passionate whisky collector for more than 20 years, Cask Trade’s owner Simon Aron, suffered many false promises from whisky investment companies and this drove his ambition to create a real and trustworthy market place for whisky collectors and investors, and bottlers.

“It’s a really exciting time for whisky sales as the recent Sotheby’s auction proved. I was in the room and the excitement was palpable and marked a historic moment for the spirits market. With the launch of auctionyourcask.com we offer a fresh approach to selling whisky by the cask, not just the bottle,” says Simon.

Whisky Price Growth

A mixed portfolio investment of 14 whisky casks purchased for £100,000 would appreciate at an estimated average increase of 13-18% a year (over 4-6 years), generating a target gross return of more than £214,000, an increase of approximately 114%.

Whisky, according to the recent Knight Frank Wealth Report, is 2019’s top performing luxury investment. With an increase of 40% on rare bottle values in the last 12 months, it far outstripped the more established alternative assets such as art, wine and cars.

auctionyourcask.com

The first auction on 22nd January will run until 2nd February (ending 8pm GMT) and feature approximately 24 casks including: Glen Ord barrel April 2015 estimated £2,000-£3,000; Glenrothes sherry hogshead 2009 estimated £9,000-£11,000; Bruichladdich 2007 in a first fill ex-Chateau Margaux barrique estimated £29,000-£33,000 and Springbank 1995 sherry hogshead estimated £40,000-£50,000.

Those looking to register their interest in the auction should visit www.auctionyourcask.com – the deadline for entry is 10th January 2020.

Two tastings of cask-strength whisky will be held for those who register their interest in the auction. The tastings will take place at Cask Trade’s offices on Regent Street on 15th January at 12noon until 2pm and 5.30pm until 8pm. Tickets for both tastings can be purchased from www.auctionyourcask.com/news-and-events (£10/ticket). However if you can’t make the date, a limited supply of samples will be available online after the tasting.

All casks will need to have had a recent re-gauge ready for auction and a full 70cl sample will be drawn so that bidders have the opportunity, wherever possible, to try the whisky before they buy. Cask Trade validate all the sellers and confirm proof of ownership and the history of the cask enabling bidders to safely buy. With complete transparency and no sellers’ fee Cask Trade can offer bidders the actual hammer price. Their low buyers’ fee of 15% + VAT will offer the opportunity to buyers, trade or private, to buy rare casks.

Cask Trade, the company behind of auctionyourcask.com, buys and sells exceptional cask whiskies. The company is unique because it only sells casks it owns outright, and it only sells whole casks: it is not a whisky cask broker and it does not offer fractional sales, as part of a fund.

Hosted four times a year the next auctions will take place in April, July and October 2020.
