Bidding Begins on Lost Distillery Collection from Speyside’s Best Kept Secret, Caperdonich – Scotch Whisky News

Bidding Begins on Lost Distillery Collection from Speyside’s Best Kept Secret, Caperdonich

The legacy of one of Speyside’s most elusive lost distilleries, Caperdonich, will live on from today (Friday 30 October) as bidding begins on one of the largest collections of Caperdonich to ever come to auction on whiskyauctioneer.com, the world’s leading platform for buying and selling whiskies at auction.

The auction is now live and will end from 7pm on Monday 9th November.

Over 70 rare bottles from this lost distillery feature in Whisky Auctioneer’s current auction, 63 of which are from a single owner’s private collection. Highlights from the sale include independent bottlings from Jack Wieber and Prestonfield House, over 40 expressions aged for over 35 years and a unique private cask blend of which only five bottles were ever produced

All lost distillery histories are laced with sadness and intrigue when they depart the whisky world, but the Caperdonich story is one of Speyside’s most eventful tales.

The distillery was the first of the ‘extension’ distilleries built next to the original Glen Grant    plant when demand began to rise back in 1897. Then named ‘Glen Grant Number 2’, the distillery changed its name to Caperdonich in 1967, meaning ‘secret well’, after its water source. After several acquisitions, the distillery was closed for good in the early 2000s.

Demolished in 2011, the Caperdonich distillery will never distil again and it is this scarcity that has led to expressions from Scotland’s lost distilleries becoming some of the most highly prized and sought-after possessions for collectors in recent years.

Joe Wilson, Head of Auction Content at Whisky Auctioneer, said:

“The history of Caperdonich is truly captivating and these bottles are rare sightings on the secondary market. A collection of this significance from a distillery as elusive as Caperdonich in a single auction is an exciting discovery and offers a unique opportunity for our global audience of whisky enthusiasts, and in particular, collectors of whisky from Scotland’s lost distilleries.

“Independent bottlings like these offer a fascinating insight into the secrets of a Speyside distillery that otherwise could so easily have only been a footnote in the story of Glen Grant distillery. Over recent months, we have witnessed an increase in the demand for liquid from Caperdonich and so we are sure that these bottles will attract a huge appeal.”

This single malt collection is not the only ‘lost’ distillery highlight of the online whisky sale, which also welcomes sought-after bottlings from ghosts of the whisky world including Glenugie, Dallas Dhu, Port Ellen and Rosebank. Other stand-out bottles in the sale include incredible aged and limited edition expressions from The Macallan, including the newly-launched Red Collection and the stunning 72 Year Old Lalique Genesis Decanter.

The auction also welcomes another presentation from Pat’s Whisk(e)y Collection, the largest private whisky collection to come to auction, with a spotlight on over 130 whiskies from The GlenDronach distillery.

Whisky Auctioneer’s auctions are world leading and record breaking. Unmatched in auction volume, variety of bottles offered, prices achieved, global reach, service standards upheld and broadness of knowledge and expertise, the company is truly a global authority.

Sotheby’s and The Macallan Unveil The Red Collection: A New Collection of Six Classic Aged Single Malt Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News

Sotheby’s and The Macallan Unveil The Red Collection:

A New Collection of Six Classic Aged Single Malt Whiskies

from The Macallan Distillery, Launching Today

*Featuring The Macallan 78 Years Old,

The Oldest Aged Whisky Ever to be Sold at Auction*

Sotheby’s to Offer a Complete Set with Hand-Signed Labels by

Spanish Artist and Illustrator Javi Aznarez

*The Only Artist’s Label Set to be Released by The Macallan*

– Auction in London on 31 October 2020 –

*Proceeds to be Donated to Food Charity, City Harvest*

LONDON, 15 October 2020 – Sotheby’s and The Macallan today unveiled The Red Collection, a new classic aged collection of single malt from The Macallan Distillery. The complete set of six whiskies is anchored by The Macallan 40 Years Old, The Macallan 50 Years Old and The Macallan 60 Years Old, which are joined by two further highly aged bottles at 71 Years Old and 74 Years Old. The sixth and final bottle in this collection has been matured for 78 Years, making it not only the oldest bottle released from The Macallan Distillery, but the oldest age statement whisky ever offered at auction.*

An extremely rare, complete set of The Red Collection is set to be auctioned by Sotheby’s in London on 31 October 2020, after being gifted by The Macallan to City Harvest to raise funds for the food charity which redistributes surplus from the food industry to vulnerable people across London. Estimated at £200,000-800,000, the unique lot will open Sotheby’s first annual sale of Spirits to fall on day that Halloween is celebrated around the world, The Ultimate Whisky Collection Part II + More.

This set differs from the standard release and can be identified by its exclusive labels, which are illustrated and signed by Spanish artist Javi Aznarez. Only two sets contain these labels: Set #1 will remain in The Macallan’s archives and Set #2 is being presented in the Sotheby’s auction – as such, it is the only complete set of its kind to be made available to collectors around the world. The Sotheby’s set also uniquely includes two exclusive display cases and two bespoke tables.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Spirits Specialist, said: “We are thrilled to partner with The Macallan to offer The Red Collection, alongside our second offering of The Ultimate Whisky Collection, as part of our inaugural Halloween Spirits sale. This is the only opportunity for whisky collectors to own a truly special Red Collection set with labels hand-signed by Javi Aznarez. This unique event also marks our third charity-related partnership with The Macallan in recent years, following record-breaking prices for The Macallan M Constantine and The Macallan in Lalique Legacy Collection in Hong Kong. We look forward to continuing this success with the sale of The Red Collection, the proceeds of which will benefit City Harvest London, which has enabled quality surplus food to be redistributed for free to those unable to access food during COVID, providing support for vulnerable people across the city.”

Inspired by the significance of the colour red throughout the history of the brand, The Red Collection captures The Macallan’s deep respect for tradition and craftsmanship. Distilled decades ago, in The Macallan’s signature copper stills, each expression in the collection has been matured in the distillery’s oak casks under the watchful eye of several generations of whisky makers. Over time, they developed into extraordinarily elegant aged whiskies.

The colour red has deep and long-standing significance for The Macallan, beginning with Alexander Reid, the farmer and teacher who founded The Macallan in 1824, whose surname means ‘the red one’ in Scots and was originally associated with red hair.  In 1903, owner Roderick Kemp launched The Macallan Choice Old range, which was reportedly shipped in cases labelled with distinctive red print to distinguish it from The Macallan’s existing whiskies, which featured black labelling.  Almost eight decades later, in 1980, red was to feature strongly in the release of The Macallan’s then oldest vintages, dated 1938, 1940 and 1950. Allan Shiach, chairman of The Macallan at that time, tied a red ribbon around the sought-after bottlings to denote their age and value.

These three characters are featured in an animated film created to introduce The Red Collection in collaboration with Javi Aznarez, acclaimed for his striking graphic art which has featured in several films, including director Wes Anderson’s forthcoming feature, The French Dispatch. The animation is set to music recorded by Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti, one of the most sought-after classical musicians of her generation.

Each bottle in The Red Collection is encased in a hand-crafted oak presentation box created from the same sustainable European oak used to craft The Macallan’s oak casks. These boxes are beautifully upholstered with sustainably sourced soft red leather from Scottish supplier Bridge of Weir Leather, which creates upholstery for leading luxury car brands across the globe.

Three of the bottles in the collection are also hand-signed by Kirsteen Campbell, who was appointed Master Whisky Maker at The Macallan in 2019 – the first woman to occupy the role in the history of the brand. The remaining three bottles – The Macallan 71 Years Old, The Macallan 74 Years Old and The Macallan 78 Years Old – are hand-signed by Sarah Burgess, Lead Whisky Maker for The Macallan.

The Ultimate Whisky Collection Part II will bring together whiskies from renowned distilleries in Scotland, Ireland and Japan. Last October, Sotheby’s made history in the world of collectible spirits when the sale of The Ultimate Whisky Collection achieved £7.6 million ($10 million), the highest total for any whisky collection ever offered at auction. Headlined by a bottle of The Macallan Fine & Rare 60-Year-Old 1926, which set an auction record for any bottle of wine or spirit at £1.5 million ($1.9 million), the sale was 100% sold, with all 391 lots snapped up by collectors eager to acquire sought-after and iconic bottlings. Assembled by a private American Connoisseur over some 20 years, it was the most comprehensive catalogue of whisky ever to be offered by a single owner in a single auction. Featuring a roll-call of over 35 distilleries, this year’s offering is estimated to bring in the region of £800,000. The forthcoming sale will also include further lots from other important collectors.

Notes

*A whisky’s ‘vintage’ refers to the year the spirit was distilled; its ‘age statement’ denotes length of time it has been matured for in oak casks.

About Sotheby’s Wine

Sotheby’s Wine’s annual worldwide sales in 2019 significantly exceeded $100 million for the second consecutive year, led by a 20% increase in auction sales to a total of $118 million – the highest-ever annual total in Sotheby’s history.

Sotheby’s Wine, with a store located within the auction house’s worldwide headquarters on New York’s Upper East Side, offers a carefully curated selection of wines from the world’s most prestigious producers and important regions. Expertly assembled by Sotheby’s’ experienced specialists, the everevolving selection is built upon lasting relationships with winemakers from across the globe, with prices beginning at just $13.95. With bottles that are ready for immediate consumption, in addition to investment-worthy wines from highly sought-after vintages, each wine is chosen for its expression of its region and value for money. Each bottle selected by Sotheby’s specialist team must pass the brand’s signature “three-glass” tasting guideline, meaning that the tasters must like it enough to want to drink three glasses, or the standard amount enjoyed when sharing a bottle.

The Sotheby’s Wine Store in New York City is located at 1334 York Avenue, and is open Monday through Friday from 10AM to 7PM and Saturday from 10AM to 6PM. Along with a retail location in Hong Kong Sotheby’s Wine also offers all bottles online, 24 hours, at www.sothebyswine.com.

WHISKY INDUSTRY JOINS FORCES WITH DODDIE’S FOUNDATION – Scotch Whisky News

WHISKY INDUSTRY JOINS FORCES WITH DODDIE’S FOUNDATION

SCOTLAND’S whisky industry is set to toast Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir in celebration of the third anniversary of his charity, the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which was set up to raise funds to aid research into the causes of Motor Neuron Disease and investigate potential cures.

The Whisky Shop Auctions has kindly offered to host Doddie’s Whisky Auction online from Wednesday 11th November to Sunday 22nd November, with people invited to register for the event which is supported by the biggest and best-known names in whisky.

A wonderful collection of unique and highly sought-after bottles will come under the hammer to raise funds for Doddie’s charity, which since its inception in 2017 – following his diagnosis with MND – has raised over £7m for research and drug development.

Whisky lovers will be able to register when the auction site goes live on October 22, where the catalogue of bottles will be continuously updated on www.whiskyshop.com/auctions/doddies-charity-auction.

The auction includes a ‘Keepers of Quaich’ rare private single cask bottling of Strathisla, Talisker, Highland Park and Glenfiddich that is likely to attract whisky connoisseurs, collectors and investors alike, while the Worshipful  Company of Liverymen have offered up two bottles of their Master’s Cask single malt, of which only 200 bottles were produced.

An equally rare 38-year-old Royal Salute ‘Stone of Destiny’ will attract interest from both home and abroad, as will a bottle from one of Speyside’s iconic distilleries – Balvenie Signature Batch No.1 from 2007- alongside some exceptionally rare Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glenrothes and Glen Moray. Highly sought-after single malts from Scotland’s island distilleries are well represented, with rare bottles from Tobermory, Arran, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Jura and Kilchoman.

All major parties in the distilling trade, including Diageo, William Grant & Sons, Chivas Bros, Whyte & Mackay, Edrington, Glenmorangie, Ben Nevis Distilling, Distell and Loch Lomond, along with several independent brands, have also generously contributed.

Scott Dickson, Marketing Director of The Loch Lomond Group who hatched the concept of ‘Doddie’s Whisky Auction’ said; “I watched Doddie last year on the BBC Sports Personality of The Year Awards and I made a commitment to myself to raise some awareness and more importantly funds for Doddie’s Foundation. I felt there was no better way than mobilising the scotch whisky industry into helping and with the help of Scott Hastings and Finlay Calder we brought this auction to life. Since starting this project it’s been amazing to see the generosity of the industry coming together to support the auction and proud that we have been able to do our bit and give something back.”

MN5DF founder, Doddie Weir OBE, expressed his enthusiasm and delight at this venture finally coming together.

“I do love a dram myself and for a while, I’ve had this idea of doing something with the various distilleries and brands, in thanking them for the support they continue to give the Foundation, but also to celebrate everything they have done for Scotland over the years,” said Doddie, who celebrated his 50th birthday in July.

“While many have staged individual challenges and events in recent months, the whole Covid-pandemic has greatly curtailed our more public and mass participation fund-raising activities.

“Doddie’s Whisky Auction will hopefully give a great many, from far and wide, a chance to support our work across all aspects of MND, and like the return of International rugby this autumn, show everyone we are back to tackle MND head-on.”

Valuer and broker David Robertson of Rare Whisky 101 added; “Doddie’s cause is one that has captured the attention of many throughout the country, particularly those of us within the whisky industry, whether as distillers, brand owners, retailers or auctioneers.

“Doddie, as a player and a champion of the fight against MND, has mirrored so many of the values we have in the whisky industry, in terms of tenacity, strength, global recognition and, of course, being proudly and fiercely Scottish, and we are all delighted to be joining forces with one of our own in such a great cause.”

Scottish auction site offers rare bottle of 78 year old Macallan from the newly launched “Red Collection”

A rare bottle of the world’s oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan – also believed to be the oldest whisky ever launched by a distillery – from the distillery’s “Red Collection”, is being auctioned by online whisky auction platform, Whisky Hammer. Whisky Hammer is the first dedicated online auction house in the world to offer a bottle of the 78-year old whisky, giving its members the unique opportunity to bid on this super rare single malt Scotch whisky.

Whisky Hammer, a family-owned business in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has launched the online auction (https://www.whiskyhammer.com/auction/current) that will run until 7pm (BST) on Sunday 25 October with a starting price of £10,000 for The Macallan 78-year old. The auction features over 3,000 lots, from everyday drams to investment-grade iconic bottles, and represents Whisky Hammer’s largest online auction to-date.  New members can join to participate in the auction by following Whisky Hammer’s quick and straightforward registration process at whiskyhammer.com.

Given its age, exclusivity and the level of global demand for The Macallan, the new release is expected to prove popular with whisky lovers and investors around the world.

The Macallan Red Collection launched this week comprises 40, 50, 60, 71, 74 and 78-year olds. The producer describes the new collection as “an exquisite range of distinguished and rare single malt Scotch whiskies, shaped by the actions of our founder Alexander Reid and key characters in our history, who have laid the foundations for our single malt today”. It adds: “This collection celebrates the rich range of reds present naturally in every step of our process”.

The 78-year old is described as reflecting “deep respect for time, tradition and craftsmanship”. It is being presented by The Macallan lead whisky maker Sarah Burgess and was laid down decades ago in The Macallan’s “hand-picked oak casks”. Tasting notes describe its colour as “Sunset on the Spey”.

Its oak presentation box is crafted by hand in the UK, using the same sustainable European oak used to make The Macallan casks. The box is upholstered with sustainably sourced, soft Scottish leather from Bridge of Weir Leather.

Whisky Hammer hosts auctions once a month, dedicated to whisky and other fine spirits, allowing buyers and sellers from every corner of the globe to participate at www.whiskyhammer.com. It has auctioned several rare and collectible whiskies – both bottles and casks – since its launch in 2016.  The business has recently re-located to a new, purpose built, facility in Aberdeenshire which is also home to a sister business, Still Spirit – a whisky shop and exquisite tasting room.

Daniel Milne, Managing Director of Whisky Hammer, said: “We’re really excited to be able to offer something as rare as this 78 year old expression from The Macallan Red Collection for auction and we expect a very high level of interest in this lot. The Macallan is one of the most well-known and loved Scotch whisky brands and is regarded globally as the epitome of quality and taste – add to this the thrill of the oldest single malt ever released by Macallan, the end result is a true icon in whisky history.

“As a Scottish family-run business we have seen rapid growth since our inaugural auction in 2016 – today we are one of the largest online dedicated whisky auction platforms globally.  We’re delighted to have been able to host such an exclusive whisky which builds on our growing reputation as a place for whisky lovers and investors to buy and sell these iconic whiskies.”

Tasting notes for The Macallan 78-year old

Colour: Sunset on the Spey

Nose: A fresh fruit medley of apple, peach and grape moving into fresh lime and verbena. Antique oak and soft leather move quickly into a luxurious dark chocolate and dried fruit sensation. The dried fruits are a balance of dates and raisins. Finally, a rich inviting vanilla cake.

Palate: Warming oak spice of nutmeg and ginger open into the rich dried fruits of raisin, prune, date and a hint of almond nuttiness. The oak rich whisky is warming yet dry with powerful treacle toffee and a baked apple sweetness.

Finish: A long thought provoking finish, all of the flavours from the nose and the taste make an appearance in this finish….Remarkable.

ABV: 42.2 per cent

Whisky Maker: Sarah Burgess
