The Whisky Lounge March 2017 Events – Whisky News
Bring your Craic!
Well that got your attention!
I hope you are all well and and good and this old storm Doris is not causing you too many problems. TWL HQ has battened down the hatches in our bunker with 1 weeks worth of coffee and biscuits and 1000 years worth of whisky. Obviously both figures depend on rate of consumption, so could vary massively. Well we don’t seem to be any quieter here and we have events coming up faster than a….proverbial. Our ‘We Heart Islay’ mini-series kicks off tonight in Manchester, our Newcastle Whisky Festival returns in just 2 weeks and we have another new tasting series to tell you about – phew! In fact we have split the newsletter into two parts, with part two ready for you on Monday so that we don’t take up too much of your valuable dramming time
Irish Whiskey – A Celebration!
With St. Patrick’s Day coming up next month, we thought it high time that we focus on Irish Whiskey for our March series. As many of you know, Irish Whiskey has for some years punched way above its weight in terms of recognition and shelf space in supermarkets and bars. However, when it comes to quality, it simply hasn’t competed with its Celtic cousin across the Irish Sea.
This fact is now being rectified as we speak. Distilleries are popping up across the country with the promise of a focus on small batch, quality whiskies, whilst the larger, historic distillers are recognising the need for more interesting and innovative whiskies in their ranges.
This series focusses on two distilleries. Jameson – the most recognised Irish whiskey brand in the world – and The Quiet Man from Londonderry. Jameson has started bottling some incredible whiskies and giving them a push – whiskies that simply are not replicated anywhere else at the moment. The Quiet Man is bottling whiskies of undeniable quality and is an interesting story in itself.

Dr. Jim Swan, 1941-2017
We were all really gutted to hear the news that friend of The Whisky Lounge, Industry legend and all-round nice guy, Dr. Jim Swan passed away last week.
He was responsible for many of the whiskies and distilleries we now take for granted, including Kilchoman, Penderyn and Kavalan as well as newer distilleries such as The Dublin Distillery and The Cotswolds Distillery.
I knew him personally and was lucky enough to spend some good time with him over the last 8 years or so.
Grab a dram, raise it to him and be thankful for those around you and still with us.
I have written a short piece about him – Click HERE
Sláinte!
