BC Distillers with Mark Gillespie and BC Distillers
British Columbia is rapidly becoming one of Canada’s centres of craft spirits excellence, with distillers beginning to push the boundaries of Canadian Whisky tradition. BC distillers are building on the province’s reputation for quality to produce spirits including Scotch-style single malts, and while the British Columbia spirits industry is still in its infancy, the future appears bright.
WhiskyCast’s Mark Gillespie will lead a panel discussion and whisky tasting with distillers from eight BC distilleries: Shelter Point, Dubh Glas, Victoria Distillers, Odd Society, Pemberton Distillery, The Liberty Distillery, Okanagan Spirits, and deVine Spirits. Each distillery will bring a unique whisky for this Grand Tasting, including experimental whiskies that may never be available for tasting again.
We’ll look at how recent legislation at the provincial level has made it easier for craft distillers to reach consumers, whether British Columbia’s unique “terroirs” make a difference, and whether “organic” production makes a difference in the final spirit (or just helps in marketing).

The Dave Broom Craft Whiskies Grand Tasting
Corby’s craft range is one of the most highly awarded in the world and features; Pike Creek 10 Year Old, Lot 40 100% pot stilled Rye, Gooderham and Worts Four Grain and JP Wiser’s 18 Year Old. However, this year they will release uniquely rare expressions of each of these in highly allocated quantities. The driving principle behind this incredible range is simple; to create the finest collection of Canadian Whisky ever released. This will be the first public tasting of these expressions in the world. Renowned whisky writers and authors Davin de Kergommeaux and Dave Broom will be joined by Corby’s Master Blender Dr. Don Livermore as they discuss what sets Canadian Whisky apart as a category through the lens of these incredible whiskies.

The Beam Bowmore Grand Tasting
Bowmore, Islay Single Malt, with its peat smoke and Atlantic sea-salt brininess, every dram of Bowmore embodies the very essence of Islay in a glass. Islay malts are renowned for their peaty smokiness and Bowmore is no exception. We carefully smoke our malt in a peat-fired kiln, just as our ancestors did over 200 years ago. Nurtured in our legendary No.1 vaults, Bowmore Single Malt is widely acknowledged to be among the finest and most perfectly balanced in the world.

Return transportation from the Hotel Grand Pacific is included.
First stop will begin in the Victoria Caledonian Distillery’s visitor’s centre, then past the grist mill where participants can taste some of the various strains of malted & un-malted barley, or other cereals that this craft brewer and distiller experiment with. Then on to the heart of the Brew & Still house through the smells of the mash tun & wash backs, past the gleaming swan necked Stills and up into the warehouse and bottling hall. Return back to the visitor centre for a wee dram from the distillery’s new make and two of the whiskies in the Macaloney Cask Selection series.
Second stop will be the deVine Distillery. At deVine Spirits, join Master Distiller Ken Winchester with his vintage German potstill. Then enjoy a guided tasting of new-make and barrel-aged whisky. deVine is a certified Organic farm, and an award-winning winery & farm distillery. Ken licensed the first distillery on Vancouver Island in 2007, and created the iconic Victoria Gin. deVine’s newly released Glen Saanich single malt whisky is made from locally-grown and malted barley, and mashed & distilled at the farm.”
