Old Pulteney 30 Year Old at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Old Pulteney 30 Year Old Description

One of a pair of extraordinary, aged whiskies released to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Pulteney Distillery, each shaped by the briny sea air and deep commitment to craftsmanship that have defined the distillery since 1826.

Pulteney is one of the most northerly mainland distilleries in Scotland, its location in the harbour town of Wick and highly individual stills lending its whisky the distinctive, coastal character that inspires its nickname: The Maritime Malt.

The 30 Year Old is crafted from casks hand-filled by Distillery Manager Malcolm Waring himself towards the beginning of his career with the distillery, with Waring describing the finished whisky as “the pinnacle of my work”. An intensely complex and refined, highly collectable dram, and a magnificent marker of a defining moment in Old Pulteney’s history.

Matured in American oak casks, finished in European oak and presented at its natural strength of 50.4% abv without artificial colour or chill filtration. Limited to 1000 bottles, each presented in a crystal decanter inspired by the necks of Old Pulteney’s unique stills, with a driftwood-inspired, bespoke outer casing.

The whisky is both intricate and elegant, with sugared almonds, sweet oak, orchard fruits and citrus on the nose sailing into an initially bright palate, with fresh orange and pear notes soon softening into salted caramel and baked apples, all underscored by the gentle warmth of cinnamon and nutmeg. A long, graceful finish, with a fine balance of sweet and salty notes harmonising beautifully with delicate tannins.
