A Busy Summer – Shelter Point Distillery Update – Canadian Whisky News

Greetings from Shelter Point!

We have been having a busy summer so far, hot on the heels of our 10 Year Old release, we are very excited that the next release of our Evans Family Reserve is now available in our store.

The Caribbean Rum Cask Finish is an absolute beauty. We have been finishing some of our single malt in casks from rum distilleries in Barbados and Martinique. The molasses based rum from Barbados brings a deep richness to the whisky which provides a delightful counterpoint to the light floral notes brought from the sugar cane based rum from Martinique. The combination of these in one bottle results in a spectacular malt.

Tasting Notes:

Honeyed with hints of pear and banana on the nose. The palate is sweet vanilla, caramelised sugar with apples and subtle oak tannins. Exceptionally smooth and well rounded the finish is full of butterscotch, toffee and ginger spice.

The Evans Family is available now in our retail store and online here.

10 Year Old Single Malt

The release of our 10 Year Old has been very successful. It seems that most of the BC Liquor Stores that received bottles sold out almost immediately, the stock that we have here in our retail store has almost sold out as well!  A select group of liquor stores have been allocated some of this release as well. They will start to receive their allocations soon, once we know that these deliveries have been made we will provide you with a list.

Cocktail Idea:

We have been exploring the possibilities of using our single malts in cocktails, and have really enjoyed sharing our Whole Point and Ripple Rock Smash cocktails with people. We were delighted when BC Liquor released this video which showcased our Single Malt in their ‘Coastal Collins” recipe.

Coastal Collins – A single malt whisky cocktail, perfect for the warm summer months.

The Coastal Collins highlights the characteristics of the spirit. Complimented with a little sea salted honey cordial, and fresh ginger then finished with soda and a lemon twist. The overall profile will be both savoury and fresh, perfect for seaside sipping!

Want to make the Coastal Collins? Here’s the ingredients:

2 coins fresh ginger (about 1-in/ 2.5 cm each), peeled and sliced
1½ oz (45 ml) Shelter Point Single Malt Whisky
½ oz (15 ml) Sea Salt Honey Syrup*
¾ oz (22 ml) lemon juice
2 oz (60 ml) soda water
1 lemon peel, for garnish

*To make Sea Salt Honey Syrup, in a small bowl, combine ⅓ cup (80 ml) boiled water, ⅔ cup (160 ml) honey and ½ tsp (2.5 ml) sea salt. Stir to mix then transfer to a sealed container and store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Makes 1 cup (250 ml).

We hope you enjoy this recipe, it’s a fantastic way to end a hot day!

Cheers,
Chris
