Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 492: Rittenhouse Straight Rye

Mark Dermul, Belgian whiskyblogger, tries an American rye. While Rittenhouse is actually a style of rye whiskey from Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, to be exact), it’s distilled at Heaven Hill, which took over the brand decades ago. The mashbill consists of 51% rye, 37% corn and the remaining 12% is malted barley. Note that he proudly mentions “Bottled-in-Bond” on the label. This means that it is a whiskey of one particular season, one distillery, has matured for at least 4 years in a warehouse that is supervised by the government and was also bottled at exactly 100 Proof (50% ABV).
