GLEN ELGIN
14 Years Old
FLOC DE GASCOGNE FINISH
Why Floc de Gascogne Finish?
To our knowledge, this type of cask has never been used in the Scotch Whisky industry for maturation purposes (primary or secondary). So, this is a genuine ‘first’.
Floc de Gascogne (meaning “Flowers of Gascony”) is made in the Côte de Gascogne and Armagnac regions of South West France. A fortified wine, made with two parts partially fermented grape juice (Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannatin in this case) and one part Armagnac, it is thought to have originated in the region in the 16thcentury and was awarded protected Appellation d’OrigineContrôlée status in 1990. It is produced in the same way as Pineau des Charentes, the key distinction being the use of Armagnac instead of Cognac.
As an aperitif or an after-dinner drink, it offers delicious notes of toasted almonds, plum blossom, cherries, toffee fudge, tobacco and a touch of cracked pink pepper, characteristics that helped season the oak barrels during the ageing process. We were confident that resting in this barrel would give the Glen Elgin 2008 (14 Years Old) cask number 3010 added layers of complexity. This example shows how great the ex-Floc de Gascogne casks can be for secondary whisky maturation.
