Another incredible old and rare single malt whisky that Gordon & MacPhail sourced from their magnificent warehouses, then released as part of their recently launched Recollection Series. This well aged Imperial was distilled in 1979 and matured in single cask #5619 for 42 years, a Private Collection release, only 61 decanters filled at 49.2% vol.

Nose

Sweet honeycomb notes combine with vanilla custard and a subtle hint of beeswax polish. Cocoa powder develops alongside pecans and soft baked apple.

Palate

Ripe red apples intertwine with clove-studded tangerine. Malted biscuit flavours come to the fore accompanied by chocolate-covered hazelnuts and faint Seville orange zest.

Finish

A full and long finish with black pepper and light herbal tones.

Imperial is a lost Speyside distillery but one that has a growing reputation thanks to a series of solid releases. Once opened, the true quality of its whisky becomes apparent and begs the question why it is no more?
