2011 Caol Ila 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask 25th Anniversary” K&L Exclusive Single Manzanilla Sherry Butt Islay Single Malt ~ Scotch Whisky News

2011 Caol Ila 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask 25th Anniversary” K&L Exclusive Single Manzanilla Sherry Butt Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

The Old Malt Cask line of single cask single malts was created by the Laing brothers in 1998. They’ve since bottled countless legendary single malt and continue to surprise and delight connoisseurs with their diverse range of exceptionally selected single casks. Unlike K&L’s Exclusive single casks, Old Malt Cask is traditionally bottled at 100 proof, but always without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind. The Laings selected a diverse range of malts to celebrate 25 years in the single cask business, picking out choice casks and bottling them in the gorgeous retro packaging. This highly unusual and delicious malt from the famous Caol Ila distillery on the northern shore of Islay, was filled into a manzanilla sherry butt back in 2011. Finding Manzanilla sherry barrels outside of the Sanlucar is very unusual as the producers covet these old barrels for their ability to develop the trademark “flor”. The resulting wine is dry and salty with a rich texture and complex aromatics. The salty wine and the smoky whisky work in tandem to create a truly ocean driven malt. This special Caol Ila will provide an ultra-complex experience that will be nearly impossible to match elsewhere. Rich and savory with powerful ocean character and a deep complex palate. The Caol Ila distillery is the biggest secret on Islay. The darling of connoisseurs, it remains much less known than its southern sister Lagavulin. Yet, Caol Ila is consistently delivering incredible quality. Here’s the proof.

Milroy’s of Soho ‘Dirt Turf Peated Islay Blended Malt Curious Whiskies’ – Scotch Whisky News

Dirt Turf Peated Islay Blended Malt Curious Whiskies 46% 70cl

£45.83 GBP

Blended malts offer the best of all worlds: the complexity that comes with multiple distilleries, and the bold intensity of malt whisky. Dirt Turf is one from independent bottler Curious Spirits that adds an extra wave of interest: all the malts were distilled on Islay. It’s a smoky powerhouse, with charred peat and maritime air notes giving way to a honeyed sweetness. It’s as evocative as it is intense – and delicious, too.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Sea spray, peat smoke, honey, citrus
Palate: Smoky warmth, brine, sweet malt
Finish: Long and exceptionally peaty.

For a Burns Night dram that confidently steps beyond tradition, Fettercairn 16 Year Old brings a refreshing burst of tropical character to the table.

Canadian Whisky Awards announces 2026 Canadian Whisky of the Year

J.P. Wiser’s 24 Year Old Canadian Whisky is the 2026 CANADIAN WHISKY OF THE YEAR at CANADIAN WHISKY AWARDS

In all, 47 Canadian whisky producers were honoured at the prestigious 16th annual event

VICTORIA, B.C. (January 19, 2026)J.P. Wiser’s has won Canadian Whisky of the Year honours for its 24 Year Old Canadian Whisky at the 2026 Canadian Whisky Awards held on Thursday, January 15 in Victoria, B.C. This blended whisky received the top overall score from a panel of 13 judges who tasted around 200 competing whiskies in blind tastings.

Part of J.P. Wiser’s Decades Series, this ultra-premium whisky was distilled in 2000 and aged for 24 years. Judges noted that the whisky shows fine oak spice and leather with butterscotch toffee and nougat.

Davin de Kergommeaux, chair of the judging panel and author of Canadian Whisky: The Essential Portable Expert stated, “This solid old-timer brings the delicacy and refinement of long-aged whisky to the depth and nuance of a masterfully blended dram. Among so many brilliant whiskies in competition, it was a clear winner.”

Canadian Whisky of the Year was just one of more than two dozen awards presented at this year’s 16th annual edition of the Canadian Whisky Awards. A selection of the honours includes:

  • Blended Whisky of the Year – Wayne Gretzky Distillery – Maple Cask Whisky

The Canadian Whisky Awards is fully independent of the Canadian whisky industry. Only whiskies that were distilled and matured in Canada are eligible to compete. The Canadian Whisky Awards Gala in Victoria is grateful to this year’s presenting sponsor, Spirits Canada.
