Aberargie Distillery commissions new poem by Miriam Gamble ahead of Burns Night to mark return distilling after two decades – Scotch Whisky News

Aberargie Distillery commissions new poem by Miriam Gamble ahead of Burns Night

Aberargie, Scotland – Ahead of Burns Night this Sunday, 25 January 2026, family-owned Aberargie Distillery has partnered with acclaimed writer Miriam Gamble to commission a new poem marking the countdown to the launch of its inaugural Aberargie Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Traditionally a celebration of Scotland’s National Bard, Burns Night is a moment to reflect on language, craft and cultural heritage. This year, Aberargie Distillery is honouring that tradition by collaborating with a contemporary female voice to unveil a new poem celebrating patience, provenance, and the heritage barley at the heart of its first release.

Titled Golden Promise, the poem reflects on the quiet virtues of waiting, skill and care – themes that mirror Aberargie’s own journey. Nine years on from laying down its first casks in 2017, the distillery is now preparing to unveil its first barley-to-bottle single malt Scotch whisky in March 2026.

Written by Miriam Gamble, Golden Promise takes its name from the heritage barley variety used in Aberargie’s inaugural whisky. The poem explores how time, repetition, and restraint shape what is most worth having, from friendships and love to the slow transformation of grain into spirit.

Aberargie is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to operate a barley-to-bottle philosophy, using heritage Golden Promise barley grown on the fields in front of the distillery, as well as Laurette barley from the two other family farms.  Although lower-yielding than modern strains, Golden Promise is grown at Aberargie for its flavour benefits, producing a full-bodied, malty new-make spirit with notable oiliness and depth.

Niel Hendriksz, Managing Director of Aberargie Distillery, said:

“Burns Night invites reflection on what we choose to value and preserve.

“Working with Miriam felt like a natural way to honour Scotland’s literary heritage while also reflecting the values behind our first single malt. Commissioning a poem felt like an honest way to mark this moment, not just as a distillery approaching a first release, but as custodians of land and whisky traditions.

“Patience, care and provenance have defined our journey from the very beginning.”

Poet and essayist Miriam Gamble of the University of Edinburgh said:

“It’s been a real pleasure collaborating with Aberargie to produce a poem in celebration of the launch of their first single malt. Where prose’s equivalent tipple might be a pint of beer, poetry is language art’s most condensed form; as such, it not only takes time to come to fruition but also aspires, like whisky, to pack a delectable – and ideally unforgettable – little punch. Both the maker of whisky and the poet work to distil spirit: one in liquid, the other in language. In making it new, both also work with respect for, and an ear to everything they can learn from, their many antecedents on the long road of tradition.”

The whole poem is published to coincide with Burns Night and offers a quiet counterpoint to the anticipation surrounding the Morrison Family’s return to distilling after two decades. The distillery’s first whisky is a reminder that both art and craft are shaped as much by waiting as by making.

Golden Promise
by Miriam Gamble

Good things don’t necessarily

come to those who wait, but being capable

of waiting helps: the right skills, the right

water source, the scoop nestled

in the right barley. And everything worth

having, is it not, is a thing gained

in this way: a satisfying story,

or home-grown veg. The joy of dance

steps mastered, repeated till they’re worked

into thoughtlessness that swills around the room like whisky

swilling round the ice in the centre

of a glass. Friendships which are mellow now,

but still conjure up new notes when,

at length, we sit, uncork the bottle.

And – yes, a ghràidh – love itself.

Steady does it – slow, and sure – as we traverse

this life together: the way a plough horse

turns a field, the way a good dram

travels the mouth. Still learning – always –

but not changing anything we needn’t.

Learning to let alone what is thriving

in the still, bright corners of us, facing south.

About Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers

Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is an independent, family-owned company based in Perth, Scotland. Rebranded in 2020, MSWD represents five generations of Morrison whisky heritage under one name, with a focus on single malt production, brand development, blending and bottling. Its flagship brands include Aberargie, Old Perth, Mac-Talla, Càrn Mòr and Bruadar.

At the heart of MSWD’s operations is Aberargie Distillery, built on a family-owned farm near Perth. From the first fill in 2017, the distillery represents the Morrison family’s return to distilling after the 1994 sale of Morrison Bowmore to Suntory. The first release of Aberargie will launch in March 2026; this is the cornerstone of the business.

About: Golden Promise

Aberargie is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to operate a barley-to-bottle philosophy, using heritage Golden Promise barley grown on the fields in front of the distillery, as well as Laurette barley from the two other family farms.

This approach allows Aberargie to oversee the quality of raw materials from the outset. All barley varieties are grown to the family’s own standards, with full provenance, terroir and traceability embedded across the seed to spirit process.

Central to the distillery’s production philosophy is Golden Promise, the heritage barley variety once favoured by leading Scotch producers throughout the 1960s and 70s. Although lower-yielding than modern strains, Golden Promise is grown at Aberargie for its flavour benefits, producing a full-bodied, malty new-make spirit with notable oiliness and depth.

Hunter Laing Old & Rare at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

2009 Royal Brackla 15 Year Old “Hunter Laing’s Old & Rare” Single Manzanilla Sherry Butt Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $150.00 View

Royal Brackla is a historic Highland distillery founded in 1812 near Cawdor Castle by William Fraser. Its enduring legacy was cemented in 1835, when it became the first Scotch distillery to receive a Royal Warrant, granted by King William IV, a distinction that permanently shaped its identity and name. From that point forward, Royal Brackla was recognized as a whisky of exceptional standing, long associated with quality and consistency. For much of its history, Royal Brackla’s spirit was prized primarily for blending, and today it remains a key component of Dewar’s, reflecting its importance within the Bacardi portfolio. While the distillery has experienced periods of closure and modernization over the years, its elegant, structured Highland style has remained intact. Official single malt releases have historically been limited, making independent and single cask bottlings especially compelling opportunities to experience one of Scotland’s most historically significant and quietly distinguished distilleries. This is the first Royal Brackla we’ve ever come across aged in a Manzanilla sherry butt. This beautiful, unique butt is truly special. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.7% in July of 2024, it was filled in March of 2009. One of the youngest malts we’ve ever seen in the Old & Rare collection, it absolutely deserves the moniker. An exceptional cask by any measure.

1993 Linkwood 30 Year Old “Hunter Laing’s Old & Rare Platinum” Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $450.00 View

The rarity and quality of an old Linkwood of this nature cannot be overstated. Linkwood is a quietly revered Speyside distillery founded in 1821 on the outskirts of Elgin. It earned an early reputation for producing one of thes region’s most elegant and aromatic spirits, a character that was reinforced after a major rebuilding in 1872 under William Smith, son of Glenlivet’s George Smith. For most of its history, Linkwood’s whisky was destined almost entirely for blending, most notably as a key component in Johnnie Walker, where its refined texture and floral complexity were highly prized. As a result, official single malt releases have always been limited, with independent bottlings providing rare glimpses into the distillery’s true personality. Today, under Diageo ownership, Linkwood remains one of Speyside’s great hidden gems, producing a malt defined by finesse, balance, and remarkable aging potential. For those in the know an old Linkwood of this calliber is a true treasure, perhaps that’s why competitors over seas are happy to sell this same bottle for nearly twice the price we’re asking. This special barrel was filled in April of 1993 and bottle 3 decades later in September of 2024 at a natural cask strength of 50.2% abv.

1990 Bowmore 32 Year Old “Hunter Laing’s Old & Rare Platinum” Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1.5L) (Elsewhere $5000) $4,000.00 View

Bowmore is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, founded in 1779 on the island of Islay, and remains a cornerstone of peated malt whisky. Located in the seaside town of Bowmore, the distillery draws strong influence from its coastal setting, shaping a style that balances maritime character, refined smoke, and long aging potential. Over centuries, Bowmore helped define what Islay whisky could be, bridging power and elegance in a way few distilleries have matched. Today, under Beam Suntory ownership, Bowmore continues to produce benchmark single malts, with its older and rarer releases standing among the most sought after whiskies in the world. This incredibly unusual rarity represents an outstanding expression from the old distillery. Distilled in 1990 and filled into a excellent 2nd fill hogshead, it was aged for more than 32 decades on Islay before bottling at full cask strength in 1.5L magnum bottles at a full cask strength of 59%. This exquisite rarity traders for over $5000 in other markets and K&L currently has the best price world wide. This is a benchmark bottle which represents which would be unmatched in any collection.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Johnnie Walker Ruby Black – Scotch Whisky News

Johnnie Walker Ruby Black, 40%

THE REVIEW

Johnnie Walker Black Ruby. In the realms of Johnnie Walker taking on huge celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter as brand ambassadors, what can we make of one of their newest releases? No age statement is on the bottle, however we do get an insight into the use of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso seasoned red wine, and bourbon casks. An unusual choice, sherry seasoned ex-red wine casks are certainly something that should deliver a lot of those red fruit, slightly tannin driven, perhaps even a wisp of smoke in some cases. One thing we are missing is any info about distilleries that were the focal point of this blend.

We can certainly assume the usual suspects of Cardhu, Royal Lochnagar, perhaps even some Glen Ord, as well as grain whiskies from Cameronbridge and North British. I believe this liquid is marketed towards bringing newer faces into the whisky world, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Although perhaps it makes me the wrong person to review it? I don’t mean that in an arrogant way, but this whisky does fall a little flat for me. It has all the good features of interesting casks and a little peat smoke.

Conversely I can’t say that it’s well priced for the supermarket consumer. The usual RRP of £40 but typically reduced to about £26, that certainly makes it more approachable, but some could be put off by the association in name with Black Label and that little wisp of smoke that lingers around this release. The finish and mid-palate are dominated by what is quite young grain whisky, that in itself washes out many of these bigger, juicier flavours you get from those sherry and red wine influences. It just feels a little synthetic and unbalanced, and this is after it’s been open for nearly 6 months. The smell is very attractive with those grain notes and the sweeter aromas really taking hold of you. But this overall feels quite confused and a little misplaced for me. #whisky #whiskey #scotch #johnniewalker #blendedwhisky
