Silver anniversary celebrations for one of whisky’s most famous icons as the much-loved Glencairn Glass turns 25 – Whisky Glass News

Silver anniversary celebrations for one of whisky’s most famous icons

as the much-loved Glencairn Glass turns 25

This year marks a momentous milestone for Glencairn Crystal as the globally loved Glencairn Glass celebrates its 25th birthday.

Since its launch in 2000, the Glencairn Glass, the world’s official whisky glass and winner of the Queen’s Award for Innovation, has become the tasting glass for connoisseurs, collectors and distillers alike – a modern icon designed to elevate the whisky drinking experience for whisky lovers everywhere.

“When I first sketched the idea for the Glencairn Glass all those years ago, I wanted to create a proper whisky glass, something that would bring out the best in the spirit that we hold so dear,” said Raymond Davidson, the founder of Glencairn Crystal and the creator of the Glencairn Glass.

A global glass phenomenon

Since its debut a quarter century ago, more than 5 million Glencairn Glasses are now sold each year, with 50 million glasses sold to date across more than 140 countries. To give this figure some context, 50 million Glencairn Glasses stacked one on top of the other would nearly reach the centre of the Earth – or would be more than 650 times taller than Mount Everest.

Whether it’s used in whisky tastings, distillery tours, or proudly displayed in home collections, the Glencairn Glass is instantly recognisable by its tulip shape, expertly designed to concentrate aromas and enhance every sip. It is also widely respected within the industry as the official glass for whisky, endorsed by master blenders, distillers, and aficionados.

“To see the Glencairn Glass embraced by whisky drinkers around the world over the last twenty-five years has been incredibly humbling and exciting. We would like to thank the industry we love for all their support over the years and invite them to raise a Glencairn Glass in celebration with us!” said Raymond.

Cheers to 25 Years

As the Glencairn Glass celebrates its silver anniversary, Glencairn Crystal is preparing a host of fun activities and celebrations filled with nostalgia, community spirit and whisky appreciation. From retro throwbacks to exclusive limited-edition releases, the celebrations will span across Glencairn’s online store, Amazon platform, and social media channels bringing fans together to toast a quarter-century of innovation within whisky and the iconic glass that changed the way we enjoy our drams.

Glencairn Crystal was started by Raymond Davidson over 40 years ago and the award-winning company remains a proud family-owned business based in East Kilbride, Scotland. With Raymond’s sons Paul and Scott at the helm, the company has grown from a specialist glassware studio to a pillar of the global whisky industry – having worked with more than 600 distilleries worldwide whilst keeping its craftsmanship rooted in family values and Scottish tradition.

THE VAN WINKLE FAMILY UNVEILS 2025 COLLECTION WITH A RARE 25 YEAR OLD BOTTLE AVAILABLE AT AUCTION

One of the fall’s most highly-anticipated whiskey releases arrives with the return of the coveted Van Winkle Collection, including the chance to secure a piece of bourbon history

FRANKFORT, Ky (September 10, 2025) – Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery and Buffalo Trace Distillery proudly announce the 2025 release of the coveted Van Winkle Whiskey Collection. Returning to shelves this September, the annual offering is a centerpiece for collectors and connoisseurs alike, showcasing the family’s renowned wheated bourbon and rye whiskey recipes across six celebrated expressions: Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10 Year Old, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 15 Year Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20 Year Old, and Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Old. Additionally, in honor of this year’s release, one rare bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year Old – recently rediscovered at the Distillery – will be included in Legacy de Forge’s National Bourbon Heritage Month Auction starting September 10, 2025

The annual release continues to embody what makes this family of whiskeys a hallmark in the American Whiskey category: exceptional taste, legendary craftsmanship, and a legacy that resonates across generations.

“As always, each release represents years of quiet work, careful aging and a deep respect for the legacy we carry forward,” said Preston Van Winkle, 4th Generation, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. “We’ve taken great care to ensure the quality of this year’s release lives up to the Van Winkle name. We’re proud to share this whiskey with those who appreciate the craft, patience and tradition that go into every bottle.”

In celebration of the 2025 Van Winkle Collection release and National Bourbon Heritage Month, Legacy de Forge, a new global platform to improve access to Sazerac’s most coveted spirits, will present an exclusive series of rare whiskey auctions this September. Leading the offerings is Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year Old, the oldest and rarest expression ever released under the iconic name, paired with a private tasting with Julian Van Winkle – and a story as rare as the whiskey inside.

Originally filled into its hand-engraved Glencairn crystal decanter in 2017, Bottle #706 was safely tucked away at Buffalo Trace Distillery, untouched for nearly a decade. As one of the final bottles from the original 710 produced, it emerges as more than a rare collectible: a once-hidden treasure made available for enjoyment by today’s enthusiasts. Beyond its rarity, this archival bottle carries a provenance and a story that elevate it into the realm of legend, offering the opportunity to experience a true piece of bourbon history.

Legacy de Forge’s September Bourbon Heritage Month Auction will feature eight curated lots in total, offering enthusiasts direct access to distinguished bottlings including O.F.C 2006, the newly-released Colonel E.H. Taylor Distiller’s Council and a Stagg Single Barrel pick. Bidding opens at 10:00 a.m. ET on September 10, 2025, and will close at 10:00 a.m. ET on September 24, 2025. For more information, please visit https://legacydeforge.com/release/bourbon-heritage-month-2025.

The palate is full and flavorful, with vanilla, honey, and maple leading the way, with a burst of cherry and a warming heat. The finish is long, oaky, and fruit-laced leaving behind notes of spice, sweetness, and the satisfying heat of a stronger pour.

“Those who follow this release year after year know it’s not just about whiskey, but about what it represents,” said Julian P. Van Winkle III, President, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. “This whiskey collection is a reflection of our family’s legacy and a tribute to the generations who came before us. The legacy, combined with anticipation, the stories shared over a pour, the appreciation for extended aging – that is what makes each release so special.”

The Van Winkle family reminds fans that neither they nor Buffalo Trace Distillery control the prices individual retailers charge for the expressions. The family also strongly recommends those interested in the Van Winkle Collection to purchase through a licensed retailer. Whiskey enthusiasts increase their risks of alcohol scams by purchasing from secondary markets and online sellers including Craigslist, eBay, and social media groups. Additionally, many alcohol scams take place overseas. In some cases, consuming alcohol that is not purchased from a licensed retailer can lead to bodily harm and even casualties.

Whiskey buyers who believe they have been scammed should not drink out of their bottle. They should also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, contact their State Attorney General’s office, and contact their credit card company about its fraud protection policies.

About Van Winkle Bourbon

The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery carries a proud four-generation legacy. The Van Winkle family’s roots in the bourbon industry trace back to the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr., who began his career as a traveling salesman for the W.L. Weller and Sons wholesale house in Louisville. In time, Pappy and his colleague, fellow salesman Alex Farnsley, purchased the wholesale house and joined forces with A. Ph. Stitzel, purchasing his distillery. Together, the three merged their ventures, creating the renowned Stitzel-Weller Distillery after Prohibition.

In May of 1935 at the age of 61, Pappy opened the newly completed Stitzel-Weller Distillery in South Louisville. Its prominent brands were W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still.  Pappy had a heavy influence on the operations there until his death at the age of 91. His son, Julian, Jr. took over operations until he was forced by stockholders to sell the distillery in 1972. The rights to all of their brands were sold to Norton Simon, Inc. Later, United Distillers, who eventually ended up with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, sold off all of the original labels around 1999.

After selling the distillery, Julian Jr. resurrected a pre-Prohibition label, the only one to which the Van Winkles kept the rights, called Old Rip Van Winkle. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to supply his brand. Julian Jr.’s son, Julian, III took over in 1981 when Julian, Jr. passed away. Julian III has continued with the Van Winkle tradition of producing high-quality wheated bourbon. His son, Preston, joined the company in 2001 and the Van Winkles look to continue that tradition for generations to come.

In 2002, the Van Winkle family partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, reuniting the Van Winkle and Weller bourbons under one roof. The collaboration was a natural fit, as Buffalo Trace was already producing the wheated mash bill used in Weller bourbon. Today, all Van Winkle whiskey is crafted at Buffalo Trace Distillery, produced with the same uncompromising standards the family has upheld for generations. Dramfool Port Charlotte 10YO at K&L California – Islay Scotch Malt Whisky News

2012 Port Charlotte 10 Year Old “Dramfool’s Jim McEwan Signature Collection 7.2″ First Fill Bourbon Barrel Cask #2554 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) (Previously $370) $258.10 View

Jim McEwan

Aromas – Opens on a beautiful combination of peat smoked barley with tantalising hints of lemon & honey then waves of heather in bloom drift by. Little notes of juniper and pine mingle beautifully with the spiciness of bourbon residue and sweetness of malt extract. It’s Islay at its best, in the early summer with the warm winds from the Atlantic Ocean caressing the barley fields and depositing the salty moisture on the land that give the barley its unique flavour. Palate – The sweetness of malt extract is in harmony with the smokiness from the peat and also the spicy residue from bourbon-soaked staves, it evolves slowly creating the flavour profile that makes this spirit unique. The most important element of this spirit is that it is distilled by Islanders who simply walk in the footsteps of their fore-fathers; no computers, no chemists, no BS, just passion pride and patience.

This release was distilled on July 18th, 2012 after spending its entire 10-year life maturing in cask #2554, a first-fill Bourbon barrel from the Jack Daniels distillery. It was bottled in February 2023 without chillfiltration and no added color, at a natural cask strength of 60.6%. Only 232 bottles were produced. Tasting notes from Jim McEwan: “Aromas – Opens on a beautiful combination of peat smoked barley with tantalising hints of lemon & honey, then waves of heather in bloom drift by. The Distillers One of One® Auction reveals further unique lots from its Member Donors and announces Sotheby’s exhibition

From 19th to 30th September, the majority of The Distillers One of One lots will be on display in London –

a unique opportunity to experience the exceptional craftsmanship and artistry behind the auction lots

LONDON, September 2025 – The Distillers One of One® is revealing a further eight ultra rare lots set to be auctioned on Friday, 10th October 2025 at the historic Hopetoun House near Edinburgh, in collaboration with Sotheby’s. Since the inaugural auction in 2021, The Distillers One of One has firmly established itself as the largest global charity auction of rare Scotch whisky, uniquely donating 100% of the hammer price to charity. Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the auctions have so far raised £4.3 million, principally awarded to the Youth Action Fund, supporting disadvantaged young people in Scotland to reach their potential and make a positive contribution to their communities.

For the first time, The Distillers One of One is announcing an exhibition in partnership with Sotheby’s: from the 19th to 30th September, auction lots will be on display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street. This will be the only time the unique pieces will be exhibited in London – an opportunity for the public, collectors and whisky enthusiasts alike to experience and admire the exceptional craftsmanship and artistry behind The Distillers One of One Auction lots.

The Member Donors

Among the 35 companies participating in the auction this year are eight “Member” donor brands, which are being revealed today.

Livingstone & Elixir Distillers, creators of The Macbeth Collection – a stunning series of 42 limited edition Scotch whiskies, each cast as a character from Shakespeare’s Scottish play, illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake – present “William Shakespeare”. This will be the only appearance from the playwright, as a remarkable Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 63 Years, and singular opportunity to own the Bard as a companion piece to the entire Macbeth Collection. Sir Quentin Blake has signed and donated the specially commissioned illustration of Shakespeare, presented in the enclosed folio – a rare chance to own an original, published illustration (reproduced once only, on this bottle) by the world’s greatest living illustrator.

‘The Bard of Avon meets The Beast of Dufftown’ required an immense whisky to bring to life centuries of craft – literary and distilling – and reflect the remarkable longevity of Shakespeare’s work, still relevant, rich and rewarding after more than 400 years.  Famed for its bold and complex character and extraordinary capacity for maturation, Mortlach fitted the bill, and what could be better for this edition of The Macbeth Collection than for the spirit to hail from the home of the Wee Witchie, Mortlach’s most infamous still. “The be-all and the end-all”, Shakespeare, Act I. Estimate between £20,000-£26,000

Bruichladdich are presenting a Biodynamic Barley 2013 Cask, the distillery’s third contribution to The Distillers One of One auction. As progressive Hebridean distillers, Bruichladdich is passionate about exploring growing techniques, championing soil health and distilling a range of barley varietals in pursuit of extraordinary flavour, with the Biodynamic Barley 2013 cask an exceptional spirit underpinned by sustainability.  Bruichladdich Distillery Master Blender, Adam Hannett, says: “At Bruichladdich Distillery we’re committed to reconnecting land and dram, and our work with Biodynamic barley is the epitome of this distilling philosophy. Using fully traceable barley from the carbon-positive Yatesbury House Farm, Wiltshire, this spirit is not only extraordinary in flavour – with the sweet malt working exceptionally well with Bruichladdich’s signature, fruity character – but supports sustainable farming, healthy soils and regenerative agriculture. A truly unique and delicious spirit, and the perfect example of seeking flavour while reducing our impact. The pursuit of something bigger than whisky.” Estimate between £10,000 – £20,000

Loch Lomond Group reveals “Glen Scotia Four Quarters”, a rare collection of four unique vintage

25-year-old single malt whiskies showcasing Campbeltown’s Victorian maritime trade heritage. Distilled in November 1999, all began maturation in refill bourbon barrels and through an array of considered cask finishes, offer a flavour journey of discovery. The first single malt (51.9% ABV) was fully matured in refill American Oak, while the second (56.6% ABV) rested in a first fill Caribbean Rum cask. The third expression (52.9% ABV) was refined in a first fill Oloroso cask and the fourth and final release (52.8% ABV) spent time in a first fill Pedro Ximénez cask. Created in partnership with luxury Scottish jeweller Hamilton & Inches, each Glencairn crystal decanter features gold-plated detailing, engraving and a gold-plated coin at its crown. The whiskies are presented in a bespoke oak display cabinet, depicting the four quarters of the world across which Glen Scotia’s award-winning whiskies have travelled, complete with a gold-plated coin handle.

Ballindalloch Distillery, who were part of the initial auction in 2021, have returned this year with Ballindalloch 2014 Cask no 3 – “Sunrise Over The Ben” – the oldest Ballindalloch in existence, from the 3rd cask filled at the distillery, specially selected by Guy Macpherson-Grant. This unique lot was inspired by the sunrise over Ben Rinnes, where the bottle is set in a piece of antique crystal cullet, brought to life by glass artist Giles Lawson-Johnston, son of Andrew Lawson Johnston—who held the prestigious Royal Warrant for Artist in Glass. It was Andrew who acquired the precious crystal cullet in the 1960s, engraving pieces for Ballindalloch’s private collection. Today, his son continues this legacy, breathing life into the art with the same passion and precision. This Ballindalloch Single Malt, aged in first fill bourbon barrel and finished in a red wine barrique, is honeyed and abundantly fruity Single Malt in a classic Speyside style. Not only is this piece an investment in art, but also a tangible connection to the heritage of one of the finest whisky estates in Scotland.

The Borders Distillery have created “Elementum”, a unique Single Malt Scotch Whisky entirely distilled, matured, and complied by The Borders team, specifically for The Distillers One of One. The brand’s distillers have selected the best spirit from American Bourbon and French Oak Ex-Douro Valley wine casks and created this singular expression of their work. Elementum is housed in a striking 21 litre repurposed ceramic vessel and marries perfectly with Scottish artist Vicky Paul’s contemporary art; a vibrant, youthful work capturing the Distillery’s fruit-forward-flavours, the skill and passion of its distillers and its relationships with the farmers and rivers of the Tweed Valley. Estimate between £10,000 – £15,000

Whyte & Mackay are donating “The Rare Tamnavulin Single Malt 50 Years Old”.  You’ll find Tamnavulin Distillery in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains on the southern edge of the world’s most famous whisky-making region – Speyside. Ahead of the brand’s 60th anniversary in 2026, Tamnavulin’s whisky making team has evaluated their spectacular aged whisky stocks. The pinnacle of this assessment is the bottling of Tamnavulin’s oldest ever release: this unique 50 Years Old Tamnavulin Single Speyside Malt, created by legendary Master Distiller, Richard Paterson. Distilled 24th November 1972, initially filled into American white oak Bourbon barrels, then transferred into a Graham’s 1994 Vintage Port Pipe in 2018, where it remained until it was transferred into glass Bonbonnes in 2023. In view of the distillery’s exceptional Sherry & Wine seasoning wood programme – of which this release is exemplary – it is not surprising that Tamnavulin today is the world’s fastest growing Single Malt. Estimate between £8,000 – £16,000

Alongside the incredible dedication and commitment of the donor brands, we would like to thank the four returning Programme Sponsors – their ongoing involvement since the inaugural 2021 auction has been instrumental: Glencairn Crystal, regarded internationally as one of the finest crystal decanter and glassware manufacturers; McLaren Presentation, who specialise in the design and manufacture of premium, paper-based packaging for the Scotch whisky industry; Simpsons Malt Limited, an independent, fifth-generation, family-owned business supplying high-quality malt; and Forsyths, one of the world leaders in the supply of distillation equipment.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Bourbon & Beyond Unite for Largest Bourbon Toast

FRANKFORT, Ky. — On Sunday, September 14, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA) is raising a glass once again with its signature World Bourbon Toast. Hosted by KDA’s iconic Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the second annual event is bigger, bolder, and poised to break records.

Following a history-making global debut in 2024, with toasts in every time zone, the KDA is amplifying the experience in 2025, thanks to a new partnership with Danny Wimmer Presents. This year’s World Bourbon Toast will stream live from Bourbon & Beyond Festival, voted Pollstar’s Global Music Festival of the Year. Together, they’ll unite Bourbon lovers and music fans with the world’s largest Bourbon toast, live from the festival’s main stage.

On September 14th, fans can join the celebration by tuning in to the official livestream via Kentucky Bourbon Trail’s Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube channels. In addition to featuring the world’s largest Bourbon toast, the World Bourbon Toast livestream will include artist and celebrity toasts and exclusive interviews with Bourbon notables throughout the day.

KDA also invites fans to “Toast & Post” throughout the day, by raising a glass, snapping a photo or video, and sharing their toast on social media using #WorldBourbonToast and tagging the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Selected posts will be featured on Kentucky Bourbon Trail channels, putting Bourbon fans from around the globe in the spotlight.

KDA Vice President of Operations Colleen Thomas said that the World Bourbon Toast started as a bold idea to unite people everywhere in a shared moment of connection, and the response last year was overwhelming.

“Last year’s Toast proved that Bourbon brings people together across continents and cultures. From Kentucky to Fiji, Edinburgh to Toronto, glasses were raised in unison. It’s a simple act with a big impact, and this year’s event promises to be even more expansive, more spirited, and downright legendary.”

“Bourbon is at the heart of Kentucky’s culture, and Bourbon & Beyond is where we share that spirit with the world,” said Chamie McCurry, General Manager/CMO, Danny Wimmer Presents. “Partnering with the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to host the World Bourbon Toast is a true celebration of music, flavor, and community. We can’t wait to raise a glass alongside fans from across the globe on September 14.”

Returning for a second year, Lewis, a Nashville-based creative agency, is once again partnering with the KDA to bring the event to life and amplify its reach worldwide.

Katie Peninger, VP of Account Service & Business Growth at Lewis, said last year, people from every time zone joined in, with participants spanning 32 countries and six continents and featuring 30 special guests.

“The World Bourbon Toast is more than an event — it’s a moment of connection that transcends borders. This year, we’re building on that momentum to create an even bigger, more engaging experience that once again invites the world to raise a glass with Kentucky.”

Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt 12 Year Old at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt 12 Year Old

Caisteal Chamuis is a powerfully peaty Island blend. Finished in first-fill bourbon barrels, this intensely smoky expression was bottled at 46% abv. A coastal nose on this one, with notes of sea air, black pepper, and hot cross buns. The palate brings out flavours of smoke, sugared almonds, and toasted nuts. The finish is sweet, smoky, and warming.
