‘Whisky Tourism and Building Brand Loyalty’ by Matthew Porritt – Scotch Whisky News

Speyburn Distillery

‘Whisky Tourism and Building Brand Loyalty’ by Matthew Porritt

Scotch whisky tourism has seen a recovery to pre-pandemic levels in recent years with over 2 million people visiting distilleries in 2022 – confirming whisky’s collective status as one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions.

For International Beverage Brand Homes Manager Matthew Porritt, building a brilliant visitor experience at the company’s Brand Homes at the Scottish distilleries is his day-to-day mission. Here he explains why consumer satisfaction and brand loyalty are now the best measures of success.

Whisky tourism numbers ebb and flow with the fortunes of the economy. But just like the spirit itself, visiting a Scottish distillery holds an enduring appeal for both the home market and guests from overseas.

What interests me as much as the numbers however is what, in the modern day, people are buying into when they pay to see Scotland’s national drink being made? And what role tourism will play in the success of Scotch whisky’s future?

The distillery experience was once quite a standardised affair. A film, a tour, a tasting and a quick hit at the tills on the way out, with success measured year on year in footfall and sales.

Thanks in part to Brexit and the restrictions on taking spirits out of the UK, the focus for many brand homes, including our own, has shifted away from short term wins to something altogether more valuable: life-long brand advocacy and consumer loyalty. It’s a huge opportunity for Scotch whisky. If you can get your visitor experience right, every guest will leave your distillery as an enthusiast, buying and recommending your brand for years to come.

For me, creating that winning experience is not always about being the biggest or the slickest. What consumers are increasingly looking for today is something more authentic and personal.

Speyburn is a great example. Having been closed to the public throughout the distillery’s history, we had an opportunity to create something really special when we decided to open our doors for tours back in 2023.

Speyburn believes that simple pleasures are best kept simple, crafting a whisky with nothing but enjoyment in mindRemoving the pretentiousness that is sometimes associated with whisky to allow everyone, everywhere to experience the beautiful simplicity of a well-made whisky at a good value, and we wanted to create brand home offerings that reflect thisThat’s why wnow offer a range of tours that cater for whisky newcomers to afficionados alike.

We wanted to make the experiences intimate and relaxed, keeping groups to a maximum of 10 people. There are no corporate introductions. This is about breathing in the smells and beautiful surroundings, hearing the accents and the banter of our people, and taking a peek into our Historic Scotland-listed Old Drum Maltings, untouched since they were last in use back in the 1960s. The traditional maltings spans three floors and athe only surviving example with the original workings, they are a testament to Speyburn’s proud heritage and the honest approach offered by our brand home experiences.

What’s more, our guides are local. They know the distillery inside out and customise the experience for different levels of whisky knowledge in true Speyburn style. We have people leading the tours who are not only former employees but can tell stories of their father and grandfather working for Speyburn back in the day. One even shares stories of living on the site as a teenager, skateboarding across the courtyard!

Every little detail is considered and personal – it’s a perfect representation of the unpretentious nature of Speyburn and the brand’s refresh which was launched last yearWe craft single malts that are approachable and accessible, and the same is true of our brand home experiences.

In an ever-more competitive market, where new state-of-the-art, multi-million-pound projects are now the norm, we’ve created a distillery experience that is uniquely Speyburn, with a focus on simplicityauthenticity and enjoyment at the heart of everything we do. Bookings have soared since opening permanently to visitors, and our tours have won awards too.

Our involvement in the brilliant Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has also allowed us to stage some very special events that we’ll all still be talking about in years to come! In 202we’ll once again be pulling out all the stops to share Speyburn’s rich story with visitors from around the world, including the unveiling of our new, refurbished tasting room which is opening just in time for this year’s FestivalWhat was once the old cooperage, this inviting new tasting room retains some elements handcrafted by Speyburn’s distillery team themselves making it the perfect setting to enjoy some drams of Speyburn including this year’s Festival Exclusive Single Cask Whisky – one not to be missed!

A desire to provide unique, memorable and engaging experiences ireflected across all of International Beverage’s brand homes. Balblair secured the distinguished Traveller’s Choice Award from Tripadvisor in 2024 which means visiting this distillery is now amongst one of the top 10% of things to do worldwide. From Old Pulteney in Wick – an essential stop on Scotland’s famous NC500 – to The Caorunn Gin Visitor Centre in Speyside, our distillery teams are committed to providing an unforgettable experience for everyone that walks through our distillery doors. And read through our glowing reviews is the ultimate sign that the personal touch is delivering just what visitors are looking for.

We’ve come a long way but this is only the beginning for our brand homes, with more exciting things to come in the future including milestone anniversaries for some of our distilleries in the coming years – stay tuned!

Molly Wellmann Joins Hidden Barn Whiskey as Master Taster – American Whiskey News

Award-Winning Mixologist and Author Will Offer Expertise as Brand Moves Into 20th State for Distribution

SPARTA, KY (July 2025) – Mixologist Molly Wellmann, named “Best Bartender/Owner in the Nation” by a leading on-premise spirits media outlet, is joining the Hidden Barn Whiskey team as its Master Taster.  In her new role, Wellmann will be helping with the batching and single barrel selections of Hidden Barn Whiskey, as she builds on the tasting profile and batching style developed by Master Blender Emeritus Jackie Zykan.

“Jackie got us into a great place with the creation of a style and profile that myself, Bekah Neeley and the Team at Neeley Family Distillery will continue to replicate and build upon,” said Royce Neeley, president and master distiller, Neeley Family Distillery. “The addition of Molly provides a valuable outside tasting perspective, as well as on-premise consumption knowledge, and cocktail crafting expertise from one of the most respected mixologists in the industry.  As Hidden Barn moves into its 20th state for distribution, Molly’s knowledge in these areas will be invaluable to help us build brand sales.”

Neeley notes visitors can expect to see Wellmann interacting at the Neeley Family Distillery in Northern Kentucky, signing bottles, tasting with fans, and maybe even jumping behind the bar.  She’ll also be visiting some markets with the Neeley team as they expand, sharing her expertise and bourbon history storytelling.

“I’m excited to join the team at Hidden Barn, having known Royce and Bekah Neeley and Jackie Zykan for years,” said Wellmann, master taster, Hidden Barn Bourbon.  “One of the things that drew me to working with the Neeley team is Royce’s ‘old school’ distillation techniques, using pot still distillation with his family’s mash recipe they’ve used for generations. Like Royce, I’ve immersed myself in the history of old whiskey, as I’ve used that knowledge in crafting cocktails and curating historically accurate cocktail menus.  It seems like the perfect pairing for us to share our love of historic distillation to help Hidden Barn Bourbon expand even further.”

D&M: RARE AND EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY ~ OUTSTANDING 12 YEAR AGE STATEMENT RYE – American Rye Whisky News

RARE AND EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY!:

OUTSTANDING 12 YEAR AGE STATEMENT RYE

Founded by Joshua Thinnes (pictured above), SF-based Subtle Spirits is an independent bottler of fine spirits which uniquely marries the world of art and distillation in extremely limited edition releases. Prior to creating the business, Josh had spent 11 years as a buyer at a well-known wine and spirits retailer and, in that capacity, had the privilege of tasting thousands of offering from top producers around the world. Initially, his interests skewed toward wine but after frequent trips to Kentucky to select single casks of bourbon and rye for the store, his spirits obsession seriously congealed. Then, after a three-week pilgrimage to Scotland, he was officially hooked and inspired to launch his own business.

Leveraging the relationships he has forged over the years, Josh sources premium distillate from leading producers and bottles single casks and proprietary blends under his own labels. And although the brand may suggest otherwise, there is nothing “subtle” about Josh’s creations as they tend to be bold, rich and complex on both the nose and palate.

As alluded to earlier, in addition to sourcing world-class juice from leading distillers, Josh, who is a musician at heart, saw an opportunity to integrate his creative passions into the project and thus commissions original artwork from extremely talented local artists to grace the bottles of each release. That art is a critical part of the overall enjoyment experience of his offerings and makes for bottles that are collectible in and of themselves.

From the outset, we at D&M have been big fans of and friends with Josh and carried several of his limited releases on our shelves. As such, when our three owners were on a Kentucky distillery circuit tour this past Spring, they stopped to visit with him at Old Louisville and taste through the barrels he has been ageing there for his Single Barrel Project (SBP). After sampling through over a half dozen Rye barrels from MGP they were enamored with RIK-113, a 12 Year old that was distilled in the fall of 2012. At bottling this singular barrel yielded 150 bottles with a whopping finished proof of 62.1% ABV.

The nose opens with aromas of caramelized brown sugar, dill, fennel, clove, fresh orange, wood shavings, maple syrup on rye bread, and a bit of white pepper. The palate has an initial wallop of pepper with orange peels, apple butter, vanilla bean, caraway, thyme and oak. The proof shows itself at full strength, but water opens the nose and palate nicely.

It’s always fun to get a special taste from this little Speyside beauty. Known as one of the few wormtub distillers in Scotland and prized by blenders for having a ‘meaty’ quality valuable in boosting blend quality, this one isn’t always available, even independently. So getting our very own cask is certainly exciting, and this one particular is a very fun expression. The sweet orchard fruit and fresh baked pastries jump out on the nose, with honey graham and some dried apricots sitting right underneath. The palate shows that rich meaty quality it’s known for, with some minerality to balance out the toffee and earthy floral notes, drinking way softer than the 57.1% abv implies. The finish is classic Speyside, with stewed peaches and pears, orange oil, salted milk chocolate and roasted honey begging you to take another sip. This is a fantastic

Killyloch 1967 36 Year Old at Tyndrum Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

As the QE2 was being launched in Clydebank in 1967 the American Oak barrels at Moffat Distillery were being filled with Killyloch Single Malt Scotch Whisky, to be warehoused until at their best for bottling. Killyloch was originally intended to be named Lillyloch which was the source of the water. The cask stencil received however, contained a misspelling that was never corrected. Killyloch is a single malt of great complexity. A Lowland malt, light on peat, heave on aromas, with a complex yet soft character, smooth with a citrus spicy finish.
