Whisky Wednesday Reviews Ledaig 10 Cask Strength – Scotch Whisky News

Ledaig 10 Cask Strength

THE REVIEW

What happens when you make an already great bottle of whisky even better? Well, you get a cask strength Ledaig 10!

We’ve all been waiting for so long for an official release of this stunning bottle of whisky from the Isle of Mull, and it’s everything you could want from it. It is a explosive, smoky, medicinal, layered, sweet, citrusy, over-the-top flavour bomb that drops definition and style in every sip.

When I first opened this bottle I was a little worried as it was a little quiet. Happy to report that it is know the equivalent of driving a convertible car through a hail storm whilst having a fist fight with some sort of Scottish peat demon that wants to incapacitate you.

That sound good enough?

FIFE WHISKY BOTTLER CELEBRATES SELL-OUT OF EXCLUSIVE FALKLAND GOLF CLUB BOTTLE

Saltire Rare Malt, based in Falkland, Fife teamed-up with Falkland Golf Club to bottle a limited-edition 14-year-old Linkwood which sold-out of its 60 bottles in just days.

Saltire Rare Malt, the fastest-growing independent whisky bottler in Scotland, is proud to announce the complete sell-out of its exclusive single cask release created in collaboration with Falkland Golf Club – a limited-edition 14-year-old Linkwood bottling.

Released to mark the 50th anniversary of the Falkland Golf Clubhouse, this rare expression was limited to just 60 bottles, available exclusively to club members and select guests. Priced at £80, the commemorative release proved an instant hit selling-out almost immediately, reflecting growing interest in small-batch, story-driven Scotch whisky.

In addition to the bottled release, the Falkland Golf Club bar is now offering the whisky by the dram, allowing more members to experience this rare single malt while stocks last. Saltire Rare Malt continues to expand its global presence, working with golf and sports clubs across the UK and worldwide – the Fife-based company is available to commission exclusive bottlings now.

“We knew from the moment we sampled the cask that it was something special, and we’re thrilled the response from the community has echoed that”, said Founder & Director Keith Rennie at Saltire Rare Malt. “We love working with passionate sports clubs both local and further afield – we’d love to commission more limited-editions bottlings so do get in touch if your club would like one!”

Distilled on 10th February 2011, the Speyside single malt has ‘sweet and fruity notes with strawberry candies as a top note, then cigar boxes and sugar-coated oranges with cotton candy.*’ Bottled at 54.1% ABV, this single malt is a bold and refined tribute to both Falkland’s rich golf heritage and the art of single cask whisky.

The Saltire Rare Malt Collection is available to buy online on their website, as well as enquiries for limited-edition commissions at: www.saltireraremalt.com

Linkwood #446, filling date 10-2-2011, 54.1% ABV.

“A beautiful nose. This is what you want from a Linkwood, nice, sweet and fruity, think strawberry candies as a top note. Then cigar boxes and sugar-coated oranges with cotton candy. The ruby port wine vintage barrique added extra layers of fruit upon fruit. Simply a lovely, fruity dram with a smooth but full body. Finished in a bourbon Butt for completeness.”

Nikka “From The Barrel” Blended Japanese Whisky at K&L California – Japanese Whisky News

Nikka “From The Barrel” Blended Japanese Whisky

$59.99

(750ml)

Whisky Advocate

For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries.

When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted. “From the Barrel” suggests barrel proof, but that’s not the case. The blenders made a conscious decision to bottle at 51.4% (derived from 90 British Proof) to deliver maximum flavor impact.

They succeeded. Notably balanced and elegant, the colorful palette of whiskies combines for tremendous depth of flavor. Soft, sweet butterscotch and orange peel meet poached pears and stone fruits. Earthiness appears as dried autumn leaves, coffee, old oak, and tobacco. Among the tangle of spices, tasters identified chili pepper, allspice, cloves, and universally adored its ginger note. Finally, wisps of smoke and sea salt. Overall, it feels generously malty, with the grain whisky lending broad sweetness and supple mouthfeel across the long finish.

Beyond its delightful flavors, Nikka From the Barrel presents some paradoxes worthy of contemplation over a glass. It is a classic, yet new to the U.S. It is typically Japanese, yet singularly magnificent. Jeffery Lindenmuth

The #1 Whiskey of the Year on Whiskey Advocates Top 20 list in 2018 is now being offered without an allocation limit for the first time thanks to our special relationship with the importer. The wonderful Nikka From the Barrel has been one of the most sought-after offerings from this special distiller based outside of Sapporo. It’s previously not been available in the US due to the USA restriction on the 500ml bottle size, but thankfully the owners designed a 750ml version for the US market. This is a blend of many of the Nikka whiskies we know and love dumped and mingled for further marrying in a large vat at the distillery, hence “from the barrel.” It’s one of the few higher proof offerings available from any Japanese distiller and has a unique character. While the Hibiki Harmony might be the most popular blended Japanese whisky available in the US, From The Barrel is easily the most flavorful. This is nicely aged Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Coffey Grain and Imported Malt further aged post blending and bottled at 102.8 proof. No wonder people are going rabid for the stuff, it’s absolutely delicious!
