Share a dram this Valentine’s Day with Tomatin 14 Year Old Tawny Port single malt – Scotch Whisky News

Share a dram this Valentine’s Day with Tomatin 14 Year Old Tawny Port single malt

Valentine’s Day is an occasion to celebrate love, and whether that’s romance or friendship, Friday 14 February warrants an exceptional whisky to be shared with someone special.

Tomatin Distillery has recommended its 14 Year Old Tawny Port single malt as the ideal dram to raise a toast this Valentine’s Day – a befittingly aged whisky to celebrate this much-loved date in the calendar.

Tomatin Distillery has a proud heritage dating back to the 15th century. It has been a home for the whisky-making team’s dedicated craftsmen and their families since the current distillery was established in 1897. Crafting whisky in this beautiful Highland location is a labour of love. The distillery’s brand platform, ‘To What Matters’, celebrates special shared moments, such as enjoying a dram together with loved ones.

Raise a glass of Tomatin 14 Year Old Tawny Port this Valentine’s Day – an exceptional single malt crafted with exceptional care.

Tomatin 14 Year Old Tawny Port single malt whisky (70cl, 46% ABV, £77.50)

A remarkable single malt Scotch whisky which reflects Tomatin Distillery’s style and craftsmanship, Tomatin 14 Year Old is a soft, smooth and sweet single malt.

This exquisite dram has benefitted from its time spent in tawny port casks, which previously held port for around 50 years and are testament to Tomatin’s first-class wood policy. Rich yet balanced aromas of red berries, sweet honey and rich toffee develop into aspects of light fruits and nuts on the palate, leading into an abiding finish of smooth fruit salad.

Tomatin 14 Year Old Tawny Port Tasting Notes

  • Nose – Top notes of fresh peach, mandarin, watermelon and apple with deeper forest fruits like cherry and blackberry. There’s a touch of milk chocolate and a pop of honeycomb. Notes of clove and cardamom grow in intensity before another wave of fruit.
  • Palate – The freshness on the nose has been preserved into a raspberry and strawberry jam, apricot compote, glace cherry and crystallised ginger. Caramelised figs, prunes and nutty tones are indicative of the rich tawny port that once occupied these casks.
  • Finish – A silky texture coats the mouth with jammy fruits and Byzantium spice.

Notes

Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands, 16 miles south of Inverness, and is famous for its portfolio of refined and elegant whiskies.  The distillery has a proud heritage stretching back to the 15th century when illicit production was likely to be taking place, but it wasn’t until 1897 that the first formal distillery was established by John MacDougall as the Tomatin Spey Distillery Company.

In 2022, Tomatin was awarded ‘Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Spirits Producer of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). Later that year, it was recognised as ‘Sustainable Distillery of the Year’ at Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky 2023, in recognition of its continued contribution to sustainably at the distillery.

In 2023, Tomatin’s success continued when the distillery’s ‘Legacy’ was awarded Gold at IWSC. That same year, Tomatin also took home seven awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while Cù Bòcan, took home three. Tomatin’s 36 Year Old was crowned the ultimate winner at SFWSC for malts, being named ‘Best in Show’, officially making it one of the best whiskies in the world.

Building upon this triumph, 2024 saw Tomatin’s 18 Year Old secured Double Gold for the third consecutive year at the SFWSC, elevating it to Platinum status. Meanwhile, both Tomatin’s 45 Year Old and 12 Year Old, alongside Cù Bòcan’s 15 Year Old took home Double Gold Awards, and Cù Bòcan’s 12 Year Old also secured a prestigious Gold Award.

‘To What Matters’ is the latest chapter in the brand’s evolution; it is a positive call to arms that represents the spiritual DNA of Tomatin – a belief in savouring what is truly important in life and time spent together.

Killowen Barántúil – Charity Bottling in aid of the Southern Area Hospice – Auction Whisky News

KILLOWEN BARÁNTÚIL
Cask #KD056 Threshing Oats
Charity Bottling for the Southern Area Hospice

88 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

This very special bottling will be exclusively auctioned in aid of the Southern Area Hospice in collaboration with Irish Whiskey Auctions.

Killowen Barántúil – Cask #KD056 – Threshing Oats

These oats were proudly sourced from the Rostrevor & District Vintage Club, harvested and bagged at their Annual Threshing Day in support of the SAHS. Grown and harvested on the slopes of Knock Shee, just a stone’s throw from the distillery, these oats were cultivated by an extraordinary group of people who make significant contributions to their community and the local hospice on an ongoing basis.

The wonderful thing about this bottling is that the oats were commissioned through the Vintage Club, with all proceeds going to the hospice. Now, five years later, the same oats – transformed into whiskey – are being used once again to raise more funds for this worthy cause.

The Southern Hospice, like many others, is in great need of funding and survives through the generous donations and hard work of good people like the Rostrevor & District Vintage Club, as well as you, who will be lucky enough to purchase one of these bottles.

Now on to the whiskey itself! This is proudly an oat led whiskey and does not attempt to enter the realm of Pot Still, instead it stands in a place of it’s own. After initially attempting a 100% Oaten Mash bill, which unfortunately resulted in poor yields, we decided to create a more balanced mash bill that maximises the use of oats, while also achieving a complex flavour profile. The packaging as always will have the specifics on the mash for both consumer empowerment and enjoyment. The cask chosen was an Ex-Kentucky Rye Firkin that had been recouped to 50 Litres and re-charred to a medium toast before filling.

This whiskey is just shy of 5 years old by two weeks, it is a viscous, complex yet balanced whiskey. Creaminess comes to the fore followed by a little warming rye spice and a tiny, subtle hint of peat to create a journey of flavour and mouthfeel that has you wanting to go back in for more.

Decadent Drams Smogen 10 years old – Swedish Whisky News

The first of two new bottlings of Smögen for our Decadent Drams series. This is a 10 year old, 2014 Smögen that matured for just over 8 years in a 1st fill Maderia hogshead, before we got our mitts on it and re-racked it into a knackered old refill hogshead, to round it off gently and emphasise that delicious Smögen-ness. It’s big, peaty and classically Smögen, but with an enigmatic Maderia twist… We bottled this with a couple of degrees reduction at 57.1%.

Ring In The Lunar New Year With Royal Salute’s Stunning Celebratory Release

Royal Salute, the master of exceptionally aged Scotch whisky, welcomes the Lunar New Year with a new special edition gift pack featuring its own “gun salute”. Created by Chinese illustrator, Jason Lyon, the stunning design depicts symbols of prosperity, opportunity and rebirth being fired from The Tower of London, Royal Salute’s symbolic home. The illustration captures the vibrancy of the celebrations that bring families and friends together to mark the passing of one year and the fresh start of the next with light, sound and colour.

The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend Special Edition Gift Pack brings a refreshed take on the significance of Lunar New Year with Lyon’s signature style spotlighting its association with renewal and regeneration. Blooming flowers and natural waterfalls signify the start of new journeys, whilst lanterns, phoenixes and sparkling fireworks intertwine to respectively represent reunion, new beginnings and luck. Icons of Royal Salute’s rich heritage, including Strathisla Distillery, the spiritual home of Royal Salute in Scotland, are also discoverable throughout the design, nodding to its longstanding legacy in marking moments of celebration.

Royal Salute’s story began when it was first created as a gift for the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Rooted in the tradition of gift giving, Royal Salute remains at the heart of celebration and continues to be a fitting choice to elevate festive moments of togetherness with a spark of wonder and enchantment.

Jason Lyon commented: “My design captures the intricate details and symbols used to elevate the festive atmosphere as people across the globe gather to celebrate new opportunities. With this special edition of Royal Salute, I’m blending legacy and culture to immerse others in joy, fortune, elegance and love.”

Inside the bespoke presentation box is Royal Salute’s 21 Year Old Signature Blend – a flagship expression and a timeless blend that has remained the same since its inception more than 70 years ago. Masterfully crafted from the rarest and most exceptional Scotch whiskies, it offers a sophisticated and opulent character, thanks to its majestic flavours of ripened fruits and hints of spice notes.

Founded in 1994, the MMF meets the day-to-day needs of American artists and cultural legends who create traditional American music, ensuring their voices are heard and giving all people access to our nation’s hidden musical treasures. You can meet the artists and discover music at musicmaker.com or scan the QR code on the back of the bottle.

Each bottle of Old Soul helps support the goals of the MMF, which are to support those carriers of America’s oldest roots music traditions. This exceptional bourbon was aged for 9 years in the powerful Mississippi heat and humidity. While the label states 8 years and 10 months, every drop is at least 9 years old. Distilled with 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley, only 20 barrels were selected for this incredible batch and were bottled uncut & unfiltered at 113.7 proof.

Expect earthy spice and fruit with notes of pear and black cherry, along with hints of dark chocolate and sweet cornbread. Rye spice notes abound, balancing the caramel on the palate with nutmeg, black pepper, and cardamom. A big baking spice finish with long and lingering black pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

These Tintypes are some of the most exciting new MGP juice on the market today. Distilled to the 21% mashbill, aged in Mississippi heat, and adorned with these underappreciated musical legends, this is what it’s all about. Incredible to taste these two whiskies together, Tintype #1 and Tintype #2. They’re identical in every way, but two years apart in age, yet they couldn’t be more different. Herman Hitson’s funky, soulful rhythms vs. Captain Luke’s rumbling bass voice. Here we go.

The color is a deep tawny (1.4). The nose is all baked pear, sweet corn, bold oak, and cinnamon. Some red fruit layered on top, with a much bigger vanilla tone than Tintype #2. On the palate, it’s a big spicy roll in the dusty forest. The sweetness here is black fruit, which contrasts the nose incredibly well. We get tons of spice and plenty of body. It’s deeper and longer than its younger brother. These are two of the most exciting new American whiskies on our shelves and represent a fabulous way to support American musical legends while enjoying some legendary American whiskey.
