Whisky Wednesday Reviews Thompson Bros 8YO Blended Malt – Scotch Whisky News

Thompson Bros 8YO Blended Malt, 44.5%

https://youtu.be/6-5pt4aTerg

A combination of Clynelish and Glen Ord for below £40 a bottle? Plus, it has a vintage supermarket themed label. Sign. Me. Up.

This is my first Thompson Bros bottle (don’t @ me) and I couldn’t be happier about it. I’m not one for marketing emails, but as soon as I saw this, I bought it!

The Thompson Brothers are the owners of the Dornoch Distillery, and having released some young stock, their indie bottlings of single malts, blended malt, and blended whiskies are some of the most looked for and awarded styles of whisky in the modern world.

The combination of Clynelish and Glen Ord in this bottle is truly wonderful, easy, summer drink that has reams of nostalgia attached to it for anyone who has ever lived in the UK.

Hirsch “The Cask Strength” Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Previously $190) – American Whiskey News

Hirsch “The Cask Strength” Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(750ml) (Previously $190) $99.99 View

Finished in 30-year-old XO Cognac barrels, this is a rare release from Hirsch, born from a collaboration between the Hirsch distillery in Kentucky and Hine Cognac. This small batch of 54 barrels started with 6-year-old bourbon from one of Kentucky’s most prized distillers. The hand selected casks were filled into ex-Hine Cognac casks, which had spent the last 3 decades aging one of France’s finest cognacs. There they slowly matured for an additional 18 months, adding complexity and richness to the already exceptional bourbon. This special bourbon has a mash bill of 72% corn, 13% rye, and 15% malted barley. If you’re familiar with the Hirsch story, you’ll be able to deduce the origin of this whisky. Out of respect for the distillers we won’t explicitly mention the source, but it is undoubtedly the most collectible and sought-after distiller in Kentucky today. It’s an absolutely astounding product that our buying team managed to acquire at an unprecedented price. Tasting notes from the bottler, “On the nose, it offers notes of dusty cherry and charred citrus with a palate of over ripe stone fruit, fresh raisin, soft heat, and finishes dry yet flavors continue to develop.”

“Tasting Like a Pro” – Edinburgh Whisky Academy News

Vic Cameron, one of our whisky lecturers says: “Water is one of the main raw materials that we use in making single malt Scotch whisky, the others being yeast and malted barley. In my opinion, the water doesn’t have a big impact on the quality but that is up for debate. In the production process, water is used for steeping, mashing, cooling and dilution.”

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS SECOND EDITION IN ITS ELEMENTS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL ISLAY SINGLE MALTS – Islay Single Malt News

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS SECOND EDITION IN ITS ELEMENTS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL ISLAY SINGLE MALTS

Elements 2.0 focuses on the impact of an extended fermentation to push flavor boundaries,

further celebrating the iconic and rich taste profile of Laphroaig whisky

Islay, Scotland – (July 1, 2024) Islay distillery Laphroaig has unveiled Elements 2.0, the second in its exploratory series of bold whiskies that experiment with different distillation techniques. This new single malt showcases the flavor impact of extending the fermentation period, producing a fruiter whisky that still retains the peaty character that makes Laphroaig so distinctive.

In creating Laphroaig Elements 2.0, the distillery team went beyond the traditional approach to distillation and maturation to uncover interesting and unusual ways to experiment with the making of Laphroaig.

Disrupting the usual 55-hour fermentation process, Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is created from a number of longer fermentations ranging up to almost five full days in the tun – a total of 115 hours. The tun was specially aerated to maintain mash conditions, much like practices of old; a process that helps emphasize the fruitier notes of Laphroaig Islay single malt while maintaining its signature peaty character. The resulting product, Elements 2.0, is a bold, pale gold, non-chill filtered whisky with a fruity nose and palate.

Barry MacAffer, Distillery Manager for Laphroaig, commented, “Our Laphroaig Elements Series is all about blending years of traditional whisky making with new, progressive techniques. There’s no whisky that encapsulates Islay quite like Laphroaig – but this hasn’t stopped us experimenting in a way that preserves our iconic character. Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is an unexpected fruitier whisky with the same peaty character you’ve come to know and love – made possible by over double the typical fermentation period. I’m keen to hear what our Friends think of this whisky which follows in the successful footsteps of Elements 1.0.”

Each expression in the innovative Elements Series features a series of subtle details on pack, cataloging the experiments that have gone into making each bottle and the hands behind them, allowing Friends and lovers of Laphroaig an unrivaled glimpse into the magic of the whisky-making process.

Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is the second expression in the Series and is available in the US as of July at a suggested retail price of $165.00 (700ml). It follows the 2023 launch of Elements 1.0 – a spicy and peppery whisky that is a culmination of three experiments.

TASTING NOTES

Bottled at 59.6% ABV

Nose: Fruity and subtly coastal. Stewed apples, vanilla custard and zesty orange peel with subtle peaty notes.

Palate: Fruity, sweet and salty. Green apples and honey, with cream soda and soft peatiness of a smoldering bonfire and smoked seafood

Finish: Sweet with an increasingly warming smokiness to finish

Established in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, Laphroaig has stayed true to its bold flavor and distinctive character for over 200 years. IS A DRAM OF WHISKY GOOD FOR YOU?

IS A DRAM OF WHISKY GOOD FOR YOU?

With more and more people looking at enjoying a gluten-free or vegan lifestyle, which whiskies are OK? Whisky is made with malted barley, the finished product is gluten free. Anyone with coeliac disease or those cutting out gluten for other reasons will be glad to hear that whisky can be taken safely, it’s all down to the distillation.

The Coeliac UK charity write: “when a cereal containing gluten is used as an ingredient, spirits are distilled and the process removes any trace of gluten. Meaning malt whisky – made from barley is safe for people with coeliac disease. Gluten is produced when making whisky (in mashing of the barley), it will be carried through to fermentation process, gluten – a heavy compound, will be lost and it is not present in whisky, also the casks whisky is matured in – sherry, bourbon and ex-wine casks – are all gluten free.

To be called Scotch whisky, it must be minimum 40% ABV, meaning that forty percent of the drink is pure alcohol. If the ABV is higher, the percentage of alcohol is higher too. A single measure of whisky, 25ml, can contain around 61 calories. The calories will increase depending on what mixer you add to your whisky, if you add any, excluding water. A dram has less calories than a banana!

Whisky is vegan, whisky is not refined using animal derivatives, all ingredients are plant-based, and fermentation doesn’t use animal derivatives, whisky is vegan. The Vegan Society has confirmed that spirits (including whisky) use animal-free processing, meaning most of them are vegan, the exceptions are certain whiskies, including liqueurs, that contain honey meaning they are excluded from a plant-based diet.

IS IT OK TO ENJOY A DRAM NIGHTLY?

Whisky has several health benefits, including: Helps in weight loss. Helps to control diabetes. Prevents the onset of heart disorders. Prevents internal blood clotting. Contributes to small amounts towards the prevention of cancer. Benefits the heart and blood vessels. If you drink whisky every night you’ll consume less calories and carbs. It seems drinking whisky can do a person’s brain some good in the long-term. A study coming out of Boston concluded that drinking one to six drams each week might actually lower the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s among older adults. This combined with a healthy lifestyle, of course. A team at the University of California researched what makes certain people live to and beyond age 90. Their study found that the people who enjoyed two glasses of alcohol every evening had a slimmer chance of dying sooner.

While you enjoy your nightly glass of whisky, you may also be decreasing your risk of developing a stroke. Researchers have shown that a person’s risk may drop somewhere between 25 to 40 percent if they drink alcohol. Harvard University assessed over 100 scientific studies to come to this conclusion.

HOWEVER One of the largest body organs that can easily be ruined by whisky is the liver, by drinking three or four drams a day, a person has a much higher chance of developing chronic liver disease, so drink aware!

Remember drink aware, the UK Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines – no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days, wee note, there are maybe 26 – 28 drams (25ml) in a UK bottle, meaning 14 units = a half bottle. Take it easy and enjoy your whisky.

I AM NOT ENCOURAGING ANYONE TO DRINK WHISKY OR DRINK HEAVILY, THIS IS JUST A FEW FACTS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT KNOW.  PLEASE DRINK AWARE.

“Drinkaware” is an independent charity which aims to reduce alcohol-related harm by helping people make better choices about their drinking.  https://www.drinkaware.co.uk
