NEW YORK, 20 NOVEMBER 2024 – A rare opportunity awaits collectors and enthusiasts as Sotheby’s New York brings an extraordinary duo of Willett Distillery bourbon bottles signed by Pope Francis to its upcoming Whisky & Whiskey auction on 7 December. Each bottle, estimated between $1,000 – $10,000, commemorates significant milestones in the Catholic Church, offering collectors a rare chance to acquire items that hold important historical and spiritual significance. 

The first bottle, marking the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ election as the 266th Pope, displays the papal Coat of Arms. This 10-year-aged bourbon, distilled from Willett’s original recipe with a proof of 132.6, was produced in an extremely limited run of 149 bottles and is signed by Pope Francis. 

The second bottle celebrates the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope,” and features the Official Jubilee sticker. Aged 10 years and bottled at 144.2 proof, this special edition is rarer still, with only 59 bottles made, and bottle number one is signed by Pope Francis. 

Proceeds from the sale will benefit Southeast Texas Hospice in Orange, TX; Maxwell Street Legal Immigration Clinic in Lexington, KY; Diocese of Lexington – Preaching/Giving Ministry of Fr. Jim Sichko; and PAWs 4 the Cause in Lexington, KY, extending the charitable spirit behind these one-of-a-kind bottles.

·     ¾ oz Bacardi Ocho finished in Rye Casks

·     ¾ oz brown sugar syrup (2:1)

·     ¼ oz brown sugar syrup (2:1)

·     1 dash Angostura Bitters

·     Orange peel to garnish

Combine all into a mixing glass, add ice and stir to chill and dilute. Strain over a large cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange peel. For brown sugar syrup, add 2 parts brown sugar and 1 part hot water to a hot pan and stir to combine.

Hidden Gems 

Convalmore 39 Years Old 1984

Opened as the fourth of Dufftown’s famed seven stills in the heart of Speyside in 1894, Convalmore’s waxy, fruity spirit has very rarely been seen as a single malt whisky. Dedicated almost entirely to blended whiskies, production was interrupted in 1909 by a fire. The distillery expanded in 1964 but was mothballed in 1985. The original buildings are still on the site but the production equipment has been removed. This 39 year old single malt, matured in a bespoke Gordon & MacPhail cask, is a forgotten masterpiece – a lost work of art that revives the spirit of a bygone era. This single malt was distilled on 4th October 1984 and aged in refill Sherry hogshead before bottling on the 19th June 2024. It was bottled at 51.1% ABV, at natural, dark mahogany colour and without chill filtration.

NOSE
Rich treacle toffee aromas combine with cinnamon spice and subtle beewax polish. Stewed raisin comes to the fore alongside soft and sweet butterscotch.

PALATE
Clementine intertwines with stewed forest fruit and toasted hazelnut. Demerara sugar develops, accompanied by subtle coffee bean and a hint of dried banana.

FINISH

A full finish with black pepper and grapefruit zest.

Only 108 bottles produced.

Rosebank 32 Years Old 1991

The history of Rosebank Distillery has been directly linked with the Forth & Clyde canal which sits in its shadow. The waterway linked Scotland’s west and east coasts, and therefore its two main cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. A distillery called Rosebank was operating as early as 1817. From 1840, under the ownership of the Rankine family, Rosebank prospered. The canal, however, became neglected and the distillery eventually closed its doors in 1993. It was reopened under new ownership to great fanfare in 2024. This release, a lost work of art, is one of the oldest and rarest Rosebank single malts ever released. This single malt was distilled on 3rd July 1991 and aged in first fill Bourbon barrel before bottling on the 18th June 2024. It was bottled at 51.2% ABV, at natural, golden colour and without chill filtration.

NOSE

Fragrant gorse flower aromas intertwine with lime zest and a hint of milk chocolate. Dried banana notes come to the fore alongside an undertone of peanuts.

PALATE
Sweet honeycomb flavours give way to subtle guava and passionfruit. Smooth poached pear leads to vanilla fudge.

FINISH
Medium-bodied with creamy apple and tropical fruit.

Remus Gatsby Reserve Returns

Ross & Squibb’s 2024 edition of the ultra-limited Remus expression, made with 15-year-old reserves, features two signature mash bills inspired by the Roaring ‘20s and the time of Gatsby

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 12, 2024) – It’s enough to make Daisy Buchanan swoon. The historic Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, announced the return of the most-limited member of the Remus Bourbon family: Remus Gatsby Reserve 2024 Edition. Released to celebrate the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby” – Remus Gatsby Reserve is bottled at 104.9 proof (52.45% ABV) and will be offered in ultra-limited quantities this month at a minimum suggested retail price of $229.99 per 750mL bottle.

“Our 2024 Gatsby Reserve is a rich and beautiful expression that contains some of our distillery’s finest 15-year-old reserves of straight bourbon whiskey,” said Ross & Squibb Distillery Master Distiller Ian Stirsman. “This year’s release is a testament to crafting exceptional bourbon and showcasing the best we have to offer.”

Created by Stirsman and his team, the 2024 edition of Remus Gatsby Reserve features two bourbon mash bills (75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt; and 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% barley malt) and is offered at cask strength. This year’s expression brings forward notes of antique leather and tobacco on the nose followed by an initial sweetness of cherry syrup mingling with the earthy richness of walnut and oak on the palate. Remus Gatsby Reserve culminates with a finish that lingers, revealing hints of walnut, fig and roasted almonds.

“We’ve produced exceptional bourbon whiskey over the years at Ross & Squibb – and we worked to elevate our Gatsby Reserve even further to create a truly legendary pour that pays homage to the distilling craft and the spirit of the Roaring ‘20s,” said Stirsman. “This 2024 edition delivers on every point and is likely to become the most highly sought-after member of the Remus Bourbon family.”

One of Scottish tourism’s most accomplished leaders has been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Dr Jim Swan Award for Services to Scotch Whisky.

Susan Morrison, CEO of the Scotch Whisky Experience, will be applauded for her 36-year career in Scotch Whisky which started as a junior member of the venue’s launch team, while studying at Edinburgh University.
