Full disclosure, I haven’t actually tasted this batch. But I did taste the previous batch. If you know anything about me, it’s that I honestly believe the Dornoch Distillery to be the most exciting and significant new distillery in Scotland in modern history. While it’s currently too small to make a splash commercially, they’re on their way to building what I have no doubt will be considered one of the top five distilleries ANYWHERE in the world by decades end. This will be the Chichibu of Scotland and there’s never been another release in this country that features their incredible malt. The boys up in Dornoch are proud of their home and the three wonderful distilleries that are currently operating. This blend features significant amounts of their special malt, older expressions of the wonderful Clynelish distillery and a splash of very old Brora. If this is anywhere close to the last release, and good word is that its equal or greater, it’s a wonderful expression of the highland style. The last one was deep and round with gorgeous waxy fruit and a pungent wild aromatic character. It’s easily one of my favorite drinks right now and should resonate with any old school scotch lover, while peaking senses for even the most discrete spirits nerd. A truly special product that makes me so proud of what we do at K&L.

The incredible Dornoch Distillery is easily the most exciting new distillery operation in Scotland today. Run by brothers Phil & Simon Thompson, they understand the desires of true whisky lovers like few other distillers in the region. While their tiny distillery can only produce a handful of barrels a year, they’re in the process of building a much more substantial plant and while we wait, they’ve built an excellent independent bottling operation known as Thompson Bros (Redacted Bros stateside.) This special whisky pays homage to their home region, a gorgeous slice of Scotland known as Sutherland. This windswept county stretches from just north of Tain over the Dornoch Firth to the tip of northwestern Scotland and the North Atlantic Sea. Every drop of malt in this blend is distilled in Sutherland county and there are only three distillers in the area – Dornoch, Clynelish, and Brora. With a rough breakdown of 1/3, 2/3 and 1%, all three are represented within this bottle. This is the first product commercially available featuring Dornoch’s delicious own distillate yet to be released in the US. Widely sought-after in markets across the world and available exclusively at K&L. This release has completely sold out in other markets in a matter of minutes and the US pre-arrival is priced 20-30% below what it commanded in the UK.

The ImpEx Collection Edition Four Debuts, Showcasing Exquisite Scottish and World Single Malt Treasures for Discerning Palates – Whisky News

The ImpEx Collection Edition Four Debuts, Showcasing Exquisite Scottish and World Single Malt Treasures for Discerning Palates

ImpEx Beverages is back with its latest curated round-up of unique global spirits expressions in a single-cask form designed to appeal to those seeking choices of impeccable quality.

ImpEx Beverages, a renowned global spirits importer, is known for its unparalleled ability to procure and introduce the finest rare and premium expressions to the United States. With a strong focus on Scotland’s top-tier offerings, ImpEx meticulously selects and brings to market a range of specially chosen spirits, with the pinnacle of its offerings being The ImpEx Collection.

ImpEx Beverages, led by President and Keeper of the Quaich Sam Filmus, is now proud to present Edition Four of The ImpEx Collection, consisting of four single-cask, single-malt Scotches and two single-cask, single-malt global whiskies from the far-off, worldly corners of India and New Zealand.

“We’ve been very blessed to represent some fantastic and multi-award winning brands as an importer here in the US. Edition Four of The ImpEx Collection includes very special Single Cask selections from Pōkeno and Indri as part of its World Single Malt offerings,” said Filmus. “The trust and care these brands have shown in the selection process and allowing us to bottle these under our label gives us an even greater sense of pride in their release.  In fact, The ImpEx Collection 2020 3-yo Pōkeno Amontillado Cask #20-26 received a Gold Medal and 90 points from the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition along with 93 points from Whisky Advocate in their Fall 2024 issue.”

The ImpEx Collection concept is to showcase some of the best “gems” in its Editions. These bottlings, spirits that might otherwise disappear into a blend or never be bottled at all, represent some of the rarer gems out there. They result from a meticulous cask selection process achieved by blind tasting samples and forming a tasting panel consensus-based only on flavor, quality, and unique characteristics, ensuring that each bottle is a true treasure.

“It’s never a simple or easy process to select the expressions we release in our Editions of The ImpEx Collection,” explained Filmus. “A single cask has to have the perfect recipe for us – the right appeal, the right size, the right price, and the right age are a part of it all, but the taste and quality above all else.  We call our expressions gems for a reason: they are precious to us (and to the consumers we have in mind when we select them, we hope).”

For The ImpEx Collection Edition Four, the extraordinary single-cask Scotches selected are drawn from Scotland’s prominent whisky-making regions, namely Speyside and Highland. The ImpEx Collection 2011 12 yo Royal Brackla ($120), bottled at 58% ABV, kicks things off, heralding from a Highlands distillery founded in 1812 and known as “The King’s Own Whisky” for being the first Scotch whisky ever granted a Royal Warrant. Opening aromatics of apples and melted demerara sugar set the palate for apples, pears, and a luscious lemon zest that finishes with soft, brown sugar and cake spice.

From Dailuaine, a Speyside distillery famous for being the first in Scotland with a pagoda roof, comes The ImpEx Collection 2009 14 yo Dailuaine ($140). With a bottling strength of 56.8% ABV, this single malt draws you in with essences of coconut oil and apricot on the nose. The palate is then tempted with a dance of apricot and tangerine that gives way to a finish of lingering green apple.

Further into Edition Four is The ImpEx Collection 2009 14 yo Strathmill ($140), crafted in the Speyside region at a Victorian-era whisky-making operation. The flavor profile of this expression is decadent in consideration – red apple, cinnamon, and sugar plum on the nose, yielding as you take a sip to baseball card bubble gum, pear, and rose petals. The finish is lasting and rich in flavor.

The ImpEx Collection 2011 12 yo Benrinnes ($120) is also a treat, drawing first breath in a cask from a Speyside distillery known for rich, full-bodied expressions. This 12-year-old, sporting a 58.9% ABV, draws one in with cherries and rosemary on the nose, followed by the sip revealing the addition of candle wax and red fruit. The finish here is an emerging blood orange that brings a fresh citrus note.

On the global whisky stage, The ImpEx Collection Edition Four delivers two distilleries that are not as likely known but still very intriguing. First off, from India comes The ImpEx Collection 2015 7 yo Indri ($175 – 53.5% ABV). Indri has been making waves on the global stage with its award-winning expressions, and ImpEx found itself a gem of an ex-wine cask bottling that drops with sweet figs and plums on the nose, leading to a palate wanting for this whisky’s fruit predominance and sweetness. It concludes with touches of vanilla and grapes.

New Zealand whisky is represented well by The ImpEx Collection 2020 3 yo Pōkeno ($125), clocking in at 58.5% ABV and finding its age in an Amontillado Sherry Cask. Pōkeno brings a water source protected by volcanic hills in a misty valley to this expression. With this whisky comes ripe peaches and honey on the nose, leading to marzipan and cashew nuts on the palate and a long, rich finish.

All of The ImpEx Collection Edition Four expressions will be available starting October 16th, 2024, when excited consumers can begin to look for these fantastic expressions in specialty retailers across the US.  For more information on these beautiful gems, including where to buy them, please email ImpEx Beverages at Office@ImpExBev.com for an individual and personalized response.

Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® Inducts Five New Members – Kentucky Whiskey News

Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® Inducts Five New Members

BARDSTOWN, KY.— The Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® today inducted five Bourbon legends into its elite ranks including the first Black chemist at Brown-Forman, a veteran visitor center manager who elevated Bourbon tourism and three distinctive distillery founders, including one who began his career as a retailer and was honored for a lifetime of achievements.

The exclusive event, presented annually in conjunction with the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, was held at The Legacy at Log Still Distillery in Nelson County with more than 250 luminaries of Kentucky’s historic Bourbon industry in attendance.

Founded in 2001 by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a significant and transformational impact on Bourbon’s stature, growth, and awareness. It is the highest honor given by the signature industry.

KDA President Eric Gregory said, “Each year we gather with our most respected legends and champions to applaud the collective progress that the industry has made, largely thanks to the stars who have helped transform Bourbon into an economic engine and global tourism beacon for our state.

“Because of their leadership and dedication, Kentucky Bourbon continues to elevate communities across the Commonwealth and create places for visitors from across the globe to experience a taste of America’s only native spirit. We are incredibly grateful for this year’s inductees and thankful for their impact in helping Bourbon build Kentucky.”

This year’s inductees are, in alphabetical order (full bios, as provided by each inductee, are attached):

●     Elmer Lucille Allen, 93, Louisville. A pioneering activist, Allen broke barriers in the Bourbon industry as the first Black chemist at Brown-Forman – and possibly the entire American whiskey industry. Her work to bring opportunity to all Louisvillians didn’t stop when she left the company. Amongst her many accomplishments, she formed the Chickasaw Little League and led efforts to bring African American art and artists to the mainstream.

●     Dee Ford, 59, Louisville. An international beacon of Bourbon hospitality. Ford’s vision, experience and leadership have catapulted Angel’s Envy and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® into an international, bucket-list tourism attraction. Since 2014, she’s served as Chair of the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Committee, earning the respect of her peers and sharing best practices that have leveraged hospitality to elevate Kentucky Bourbon on the global stage.

●     Ken Lewis, 71, Cincinnati, recipient of the prestigious Parker Beam Lifetime Achievement Award. A spirits expert and groundbreaking policy leader, Lewis graduated college as a trained English teacher, but left shortly into his young career for the world of spirits retail. He championed efforts for Sunday sales and initiated litigation that allowed retailers to use credit cards for sales, eventually building The Party Source megastore, the first of its kind in the country. Learning the industry from the bottom up, Lewis brought innovation and entrepreneurship as the founder of New Riff Distilling in Northern Kentucky, paving the way for the craft Bourbon boom that now counts dozens of Kentucky distilleries.

●     The late Peter T. Loftin, 61, Miami. A preeminent innovator, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Loftin founded the Bardstown Bourbon Company that transformed the landscape of custom whiskey production in 2014. He was among the first to take advantage of modernized Bourbon tourism laws in Kentucky, creating a world-class restaurant and bar that graciously features every distillery’s brand on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour as well as an enviable vintage spirits lounge. Along with the state-of-the-art distillery, this high-value Napa Valley-style experience greatly raised the bar for Bourbon tourism and collaborative distilling. He died peacefully at his home in 2019.

●     R.M. Corky Taylor, 75, Henderson, Ky. A respected businessman throughout the country, Taylor retired from an accomplished career in financial services and focused on a lifelong dream – to resurrect his great-grandfather’s whiskey company. Taylor and his son spent countless hours poring over family history to bring back the Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co., originally owned by Henry Kraver in Henderson. He built back the family legacy in Louisville along historic Whiskey Row, gaining national recognition – and national awards – by patiently waiting for his whiskey to age, living up to the original quality Bourbon standards his ancestor first set in 1889.

Candidates are nominated each year by the KDA and its member distilleries. A blue-ribbon committee including all living recipients of the elite Parker Beam Lifetime Achievement Award meticulously reviews and selects applicants in three categories: Industry, Roll of Honor, and Lifetime Achievement.

The 2024 Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® ceremony was presented by the Brindiamo Group. Additional sponsors include Bardstown Tourism, Blue & Co., LLC, Buzick Construction, Stedman Machine Company, and Vendome Copper & Brass Works Corp.

Bardstown Tourism was sponsor of the signature toast with spirits from the annual Bardstown Collection of hand-picked expressions from local distilleries celebrating the rich heritage of Bardstown and Nelson County.

Brook Forrest White, Jr. of Flame Run in Louisville once again crafted the elegant glass-blown awards incorporating Bourbon-inspired motifs such as amber colors, copper, and water. Kentucky Cut Stone in Lancaster, Ky., created limestone bases recognizing the rock’s importance as a natural filter for purifying water used in the Bourbon-making process.

Fred Minnick, Bourbon author and returning partner, live-streamed the induction ceremony which may be viewed online at @FredMinnick.

EWAN MCGREGOR RAISES £135K FOR SCOTTISH CHARITY THROUGH WHISKY AUCTION – Island Whisky News

EWAN MCGREGOR RAISES £135K FOR SCOTTISH CHARITY THROUGH

WHISKY AUCTION

CEO of CHAS, Rami Okasha and Ewan McGregor

Renowned Scottish actor Ewan McGregor has raised £135,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) after auctioning 150 exclusive bottles from his own personal 1998 cask of Arran Single Malt Whisky from Lochranza Distillery.

Auctioned through the world’s leading online whisky auction platform, Whisky Auctioneer, 543 bidders from 28 countries placed over 7,000 bids on “Ewan’s Cut”. The auction also saw a 160% increase in monthly registrations. The hammer price reached £119,893, further boosted by £15,107, as Whisky Auctioneer waived its seller’s commission and donated its 12.5% buyer’s commission, ensuring that the maximum possible funds reach CHAS.

Bottle #1 of “Ewan’s Cut” achieved a hammer price of £4,350, setting a new record  for the highest price ever paid for a bottle of Arran single malt at auction. This rare 26 year old Arran Single Malt, matured in an ex-Sherry Hogshead cask, is one of the oldest whiskies ever produced by the Lochranza Distillery. The cask was gifted to McGregor by the distillery in 1998, with the team also generously donating their time and expertise to bottle and prepare the whisky for auction.

The Leith Agency worked in partnership with Ewan and his brother Colin McGregor to bring “Ewan’s Cut” to life on a pro-bono basis. The bottle design and name were inspired by Ewan’s illustrious career, featuring references to his iconic roles in films like Trainspotting and Star Wars, as well as his memorable Long Way Round adventure. Each of the 150 bottle labels reads like a mini film script, with no two labels alike.

Ewan McGregor said:

What a total! I just want to thank each and every one of our partners for putting the time, effort and work into this endeavour.

CHAS has always been very close to my heart, and I am so proud that we were all able to raise such a sum for them. I know it’s the children they help and their families who will benefit a lot from this – so thank you very much to everyone involved and to those that placed generous bids in the auction.”

Rami Okasha, CEO at CHAS said:

“We are very grateful to Ewan McGregor, a long-standing supporter and friend of CHAS, for kindly choosing to donate all the proceeds from this special auction to CHAS so we can continue to support children with life-shortening conditions and their families, bringing us closer to our founding mission of reaching every child and family that needs our help.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in this exciting auction that enabled so much to be raised for CHAS. I would also like to express our sincere thanks to Isle of Arran Distillers, to Whisky Auctioneer and to the Leith Agency.

“Three children die each week in Scotland from an incurable condition. We can only be there for families with the support of kind donations like this. CHAS provides unwavering care to children who may die young and their families, at every step on this hardest of journeys. Proceeds received from this auction make a huge difference to children and families helping us to reach every family across Scotland who needs our help and to keep the joy alive even in the face of death.”

Euan Mitchell, Managing Director at Isle of Arran Distillers added:

“We are absolutely delighted that the auction of ‘Ewan’s Cut’ has successfully raised an incredible £135,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). This project has been a journey close to our hearts since Ewan McGregor first joined us at Lochranza Distillery back in 1998. To see his private cask of Arran Single Malt contribute to such a worthy cause is truly special.

It has been a privilege to collaborate with Ewan, Whisky Auctioneer, and the Leith Agency to bring this unique whisky to life, and we are deeply grateful for the support and generosity from everyone involved. The funds raised will make a significant difference in supporting the vital work of CHAS, helping families during their most challenging times.”

Joe Wilson, Head Curator and Spirits Specialist at Whisky Auctioneer said:

“This is an outstanding result for everyone involved but most importantly, the amount of funds raised for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) will have a lasting positive impact on so many children and families in Scotland.

“It’s always a privilege to work together on partnerships like this where we can not only offer a chance for people to bid on very special bottles of whisky, but also really help to make a difference to people’s lives.”

Richard Marsham, CEO of Leith Agency said:

“Leith are delighted to have been part of the Ewan’s Cut project in conjunction with Ewan McGregor and CHAS. It’s fantastic to see this level of money raised for such a great cause and that our bespoke label designs really helped push the auction prizes up with each bottle being a unique collector’s item.  And a big shout out to our friends at Isle of Arran Distillers and Whisky Auctioneer for making the whole project possible.”

About Isle of Arran Distillers

Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd is an independently owned producer of Single Malt Whisky on the Isle of Arran, with two distilleries situated at either end of the island.

Arran Single Malt is produced at Lochranza Distillery which was established at the north-west tip of the Isle of Arran in the village of Lochranza in 1995.  The site was carefully chosen for the quality of its water source, Loch na Davie, which is filtered through six waterfalls before it reaches the distillery in the foothills of the village.  Lochranza will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Their second distillery opened at Lagg, at the south end of the island, in 2019 and produces the heavily peated Lagg Single Malt.

As one of the very first of a new wave of distilleries opening in the early 1990s, Lochranza Distillery has remained independent since day one, under the care of a dedicated small team of passionate whisky people.  Arran Single Malt is a mark of quality that whisky lovers respect and trust. The pioneering spirit of this independent team has ensured that this small Scottish island and its whisky is an important and globally respected part of the whisky industry.
