Bardstown Bourbon Company “Discovery Series #11” Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(750ml)
$139.99 View
Bardstown’s #11 release in the Discovery Series, which celebrates the art of fine blended whisky’s is a very special release we are excited to share. This release combines barrels ranging in age from six to 13 years, adding depth and complexity on the palate. According to the distillery it offers up “A vibrant blend of rainier cherry, butterscotch, brown sugar, and roasted peanut leads to a spirited palate of toffee and cinnamon spice. The indelible finish of ripe red fruit and luscious oak rounds out this remarkable Kentucky bourbon.”

The always exciting Discovery Series (affectionately referred to as “Disco”) is a chance for Bardstown Bourbon Company to highlight their oldest stocks and show off their blending chops. While past expressions have featured whiskies from all over North America, this batch is decidedly different. Featuring exclusively KENTUCKY distilled bourbons – 94% of the blend is from sourced KY bourbon of the 13% rye variety. 73% of that is 13 years old and the rest 10 years old. While there’s been wild speculation as to the origin of those whiskies, there are two main culprits that are the most likely sources known to use this recipe regularly. Perhaps each whisky is from different distillers, we may never know, but the smart money is on Wild Turkey as being the source. The rest of the blend is 6 year old BBC Wheated bourbon, which I have to say is a terribly weird choice, but I’m sure there was a great reason for it in the blending room. Let’s taste it! The color is a beautiful auburn (1.5). The nose explodes out of the glass with a deep dusty spicy, rich caramel syrup, stone fruit jams and seville orange peel. Dense and dark, yet lifted with spice. There’s a tiny hint of nutty fudge or toffee on the end. Holy moly this feels like it’s going to be extremely mature and delicious on the palate and the nose keeps opening further with every whiff. Wild honey, sweet oak, earthy spice, now more roasted nuts. Maybe they’ve blended Wild Turkey and Beam? This is crazy. OH Man that certainly feels like the kickin’ chicken on the palate. Dense and oily. Bold baking spices, earthy spice, rich savory herbs, old pipe tobacco, yet super vicious and sweet as well. This is the good stuff! What a ridiculously good whisky. If you’re not up for chasing the new RR 13, you can rest easy that this bad boy will scratch that itch and won’t hurt the wallet either. Not sure why they bothered with the 6 year, but you don’t get much at all on the youthful or BBC character – although perhaps the sweet stone fruit stuff is where that comes in. IN any case, this is easily the best Disco in many many years. A spectacular effort.
