Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 501: Auchentoshan 24 Year Old 1998 Thompson Brothers

Mark Dermul, Belgian whiskyblogger, tries another Auchentoshan. Bottlings by the Thompson Brothers, who are also the proprietors of the Dornoch Distillery, sell out in the blink of an eye. So Mark felt very lucky to be able to add a few of these bottles from Auchentoshan to his collection. It’s a vatting of two refill barrels of his favourite triple distilled tipple, that yielded 321 bottles at cask strength. Let’s find out if this Toshan 1998 is any good, shall we?

Tomatin ‘Explore the Italian Collection” – Scotch Whisky News

Explore the Italian Collection

It is with great pride that we celebrate the launch of our latest limited release — The Italian Collection.

This exciting trio of single malt scotch whiskies showcases our craftsmanship at its finest. We’ve masterfully combined our exceptional Highland malt with the aromatic richness of Italian wine casks to create three harmonious profiles.

Initially laid down in December 2010, the whisky in this collection has been gently matured in traditional oak casks for 10 years. We then took it a step further by finishing it in Marsala, Amarone, and Barolo wine casks for an additional two years.

Each type of cask has imparted its unique character into the whisky, resulting in a trio of expressions that pay homage to Italy’s esteemed wine regions.

In the Marsala Edition, you’ll find enticing aromas of panettone and candied lime that open up to a palate filled with the flavours of white chocolate, lemon truffles and hazelnuts. The finish is a sweet citrus melody, accompanied by notes of toasted oak.

The Amarone Edition offers aromas of poached pears and traditional rhubarb and custard sweets. Its palate unfolds to reveal notes of strawberry jam, Turkish delight, and light butter pastry, concluding with a luxuriously rich finish that boasts cinnamon-spiced red apples.

For the Barolo Edition, you’re greeted with aromas of mulled wine and dark chocolate. Your palate will discover spiced mead mingling with cranberry, while an undercurrent of fresh citrus, reminiscent of grapefruit, adds vibrancy. The finish is marked by light tannins and delicate sugared almonds.

The Italian Collection is our third release in the series of country-inspired ranges, all of which reflect our dedication to cask selection and our first-class wood policy.

This collection is a true celebration of both Scotland’s heritage and Italy’s illustrious wine history, which spans over 4,000 years. It also nods to our ‘To What Matters’ brand platform, emphasising the importance of human connection and honouring the legacy of the people and place involved in the creation of our finest Highland whisky.

Scott Adamson, our Blender & Global Brand Ambassador, summed it up beautifully:

“The Italian Collection combines the rich tapestry of Italian wine culture with our elegant Highland single malt whisky. Italy has a historic, unrivalled passion for single malt scotch whisky, so this latest trio of releases, is a tribute to that longstanding relationship with a unique take on our traditional Highland malt.”

“We aimed to capture the essence of Italian wine—its history, nature, landscape, and traditions – and weave it into our whisky, all embodied within a single glass. Each expression in this collection is a testament to the seamless blending of these two worlds, offering a truly exceptional tasting experience for whisky lovers.”

INTRODUCING CHIVAS MIZUNARA BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY – Scotch Whisky News

INTRODUCING
CHIVAS MIZUNARA
BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY

MARRYING SCOTCH CRAFT AND JAPANESE TRADITION

Infused with the unmistakable flavours of Japan, Chivas Mizunara is your bullet train straight to the heart of a unique and exciting culture. We’ve given the bottle a glow-up recently, so now’s the perfect time to discover this elegant whisky.

So what makes Chivas Mizunara so special?

Well, the clue’s in the name. This whisky is selectively finished in Mizunara oak casks*, giving it an authentic complexity that’s instantly familiar. Mizunara oak is incredibly rare – the trees need to be 200 years old before they can be cut, so casks are hard to find and incredibly expensive. Mizunara translates as ‘water oak’ – the wood has a high moisture content and it’s very porous, so it takes great skill to make it into water-tight casks. It’s this combination of Japanese craft with hundreds of years of Scottish whisky-making tradition that makes Chivas Mizunara so special.

Of course, what you really want to know is – how does it taste? Make sure to give it a sniff first and inhale those deep pear and orange fruity notes. Then take a sip, and taste a mix of smooth, rich, floral flavours. If you’ve tried Japanese whiskies, you’ll recognise that right away. You’ll also get sweet honey and hazelnut, followed by a little spice on the finish. A splendid Scotch blend with a Japanese influence. It’s all there in one sensational mouthful.

And if you love cocktails, you’re in for a treat. The delicate flavours of Chivas Mizunara work beautifully with authentic Japanese ingredients. Did you know you can rustle up a yuzu peach highball in a couple of minutes? Just imagine how good that tastes. And if highballs are your thing, try our shiso green tea recipe. We pay tribute to sake too, with warm cocktails. Try it paired with hot spiced apple juice or mulled wine. Perfect when you want to raise the temperature.

Basil Hayden’s 10 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon – K&L California Bourbon Whiskey News

Basil Hayden’s 10 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon (750ml)

$64.99 View

Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark A highlight of the Basil Hayden’s line for its cherry cough drop and clove-studded orange flavors that nicely match sweet fruit with spice. There is some intriguing earthiness—suggestions of a mushroom-covered tree stump. The light-bodied palate delivers modest apricot, peppery oak, and vanilla, with sandalwood on the finish. Very nice flavors, just a bit timid. (JL) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

The Basil Hayden 10 Year is the same high-rye bourbon Hayden fans know and love but aged longer for a softer, smoother experience. The deep rye grain is balanced perfectly with the mellow vanillas and sweet oak aromas. Basil’s trademark spice is always there keeping things honest. At 80 proof it’s easy enough for anyone to appreciate. When you want to turn it up a bit, but not scare anyone off, the Basil 10 year is a great choice.
