Introducing Maker’s Mark® Cellar Aged, An Inspired New Take On Older American Whisky – American Whiskey News

Introducing Maker’s Mark® Cellar Aged, An Inspired New Take On Older American Whisky

Matured in a Limestone Whisky Cellar, Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged is Aged to Taste, Not Time

LORETTO, KY (August 16, 2023) – Maker’s Mark® is proud to debut Maker’s Mark® Cellar Aged Bourbon, an annual, global limited-release expression that proves whisky aging is about more than just a number. Featuring a marriage of 11- and 12-year-old bourbon, Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged delivers the distillery’s highly anticipated oldest release, stemming from the question: What if age isn’t just about time, but instead about how you use that time to evolve, develop and mature?

Since its founding in 1953, Maker’s Mark has aged its whisky to taste – not time – to achieve the vision set by its founders: bourbon without the bite that’s always smooth, soft and creamy. Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged stays true to this philosophy, delivering a richer, deeper and more complex older bourbon, free from the harsher tannic effects commonly found in extra-aged American whiskies, as a result of our innovative maturation process that starts in traditional Kentucky warehouses and finishes in the distillery’s one-of-a-kind limestone whisky cellar.

“For more than 65 years, aging our whisky for a decade-plus wasn’t something we did,” said Rob Samuels, 8th generation whisky maker and grandson of the founders at Maker’s Mark. “It’s not that we didn’t believe in it; we simply hadn’t found a way to do it that didn’t compromise on our taste vision – until now. Cellar Aged embodies an older whisky that’s distinctly Maker’s Mark. One rooted in challenging convention, delivering new flavor experiences from the environment that surrounds us, and building on a taste vision that’s been generations in the making.”

To become Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged, barrels of the distillery’s classic distillate first spend approximately six years aging in traditional bourbon warehouses, where they endure the Kentucky climate and its temperature swings season after season until they reach full maturity and can be called “Maker’s Mark.” Barrels are then moved into the distillery’s proprietary whisky cellar for an additional five to six years of aging before being blended to taste and bottled. Built into the natural limestone shelf of the Kentucky hills, the cellar’s consistently cool environment slows down the tannic impact that occurs during maturation, while allowing the bourbon to develop a deeper, darker flavor with hidden depths, but no bitterness.

This innovative and taste-led approach in pursuit of an older Maker’s Mark expression continues the boundary-pushing mindset that has shaped the brand since the beginning. Founders Bill and Margie Samuels challenged category norms when they burned their 170-year-old family recipe, choosing to use red winter wheat instead of rye in their mashbill for a softer, smoother bourbon. This spirit of asking “what if?” was present in the introduction of Maker’s Mark 46, which is crafted using a proprietary wood-stave finishing technique, and in Maker’s Mark Private Selection, which became the industry’s first custom barrel program upon its launch in 2016.

Cellar Aged will be an annual, limited release available in specific markets around the world. The unique maturation approach of Cellar Aged will be consistent every year, but the specific blend of aged bourbon will vary based on which barrels are ready, by taste. The inaugural release of Cellar Aged is a marriage of 12-year-old and 11-year-old whisky – 87% and 13%, respectively – bottled at cask strength (115.7 proof). Cellar Aged will be available for a suggested retail price of USD $150.00 in the United States in September 2023; in London, Munich and select Global Travel Retail accounts in October 2023; and in Tokyo and Singapore in early 2024.

About Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
In 1953, in Loretto, Ky., Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste. Bill Samuels, Sr., transformed bourbon from a “commodity” into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker’s Mark continues to make its bourbon the same way. That time-tested approach seems to still be working just fine 60+ years later, as Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon was awarded a Gold medal at the esteemed International Spirits Challenge in 2022. In recent years, Maker’s Mark has introduced thoughtful, super-premium innovations to its portfolio, including Maker’s Mark 46, Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series, Maker’s Mark Cask Strength and Maker’s Mark Private Selection, the brand’s first-ever custom barrel program. Today, Maker’s Mark is the largest bourbon distillery in the world to achieve B Corp Certification and the first distillery to achieve Regenified certification, a reflection of the brand’s dedication towards building a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Three Hidden-Gem Bourbon Discoveries for Your Next Bar Stock – American Whiskey News

Savvy Craft Bourbon Buys

Here’s a trio of our favorite hidden gems to add a curveball or three to your regular whiskey rotation. Each of the selections below boasts top-tier pedigree (two from MGP and one from Heaven Hill) and is the result of meticulous barrel selection by some of the finest palates in the game.

Smooth Ambler 6 Year Old “Old Scout” K&L Exclusive Barrel #24778 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)

K&L Notes: Smooth Ambler, born in the hills of West Virginia, is relatively new by whiskey industry standards. They not only acknowledge their differences from Kentucky-style bourbon but embrace them as their “fiercely independent spirit.” We’ve been buying single casks from the little distillery for many years, but they’ve only recently been able to provide us with Indiana bourbon of more significant age. We selected this cask more than a year ago and luckily bottling wasn’t completed until after the cask’s sixth birthday. While of course, age is just a number when it comes to bourbon, these whiskies do seem to turn a corner at the six-year mark, and this cask is no exception. Offering a powerful bouquet of aromas ranging from spicy to nutty, the Old Scout always delivers an incredible experience.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: March 08, 2023

This fun little barrel of Old Scout offers a lot of character and some serious intensity. If you like a nice, spicy bourbon, this is the barrel for you. Let’s taste it. The nose is a mixture of sweet barrel, fresh cut oak, toasted nuts, and dark roasted grains. Subtle, sweet, stewed fruits and an unusual maple wood character really take the nose outside the standard MGP profile. Maybe it’s the extended time at the West Virginia warehouse facility, but this definitely doesn’t smell anything like most of the MGP we get. On the palate, we’re getting more familiar character with sweet corn, big toasted vanilla, and a powerful spice character. Lovely balance between the intense oak spice and the sweet grainy character—ultimately it succumbs to the power of the wood and gives way to a long rich minty, peppery finish. An intense and complex barrel that takes the MGP thing in a truly new direction!

Will Blakely | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 28, 2023

Time and again, these Old Scout single barrels offer incredible value and distinct character in a world flooded with six-year bourbon. This one especially creeps up on you, starting with an unassuming nose of charred sugar, subtle sandalwood, peach skin, and pleasant baking spice. The first sip, however, grabs your attention instantly with sweet grain, apricot, vanilla, heavy caramel, and some serious heat. Cracked pepper, candied ginger, and cashew create further depth, keeping your taste buds thoroughly engaged. The addition of water reveals softer fruit—banana and papaya—as well as Brazil nuts. While I normally prefer these at full strength, I actually enjoy how a dash of water gives it a rounder mouthfeel and expands the flavor. It doesn’t feel diluted at all; instead, the texture feels settled and full, removing the hard edge that can be so polarizing in these cask-strength offerings. If you’re looking for something complex and refreshingly different, I definitely recommend picking this up. Remember to give it plenty of air and see if you like it better with a splash of water.

Smoke Wagon “Uncut – Unfiltered” Batch #183B Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($64.99)

K&L Notes: The Nevada H&C Distilling Co., home to Smoke Wagon Bourbon, is one of the early wave of craft distillers who nabbed a good contract from the excellent distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Twelve years later, these guys are sitting on some really top-notch straight bourbon, but no one seems to know anything about them. The distillery is in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. They’ve released a range of excellent bourbons at various price points, but we’re only now getting access to the very best juice. The Uncut is their flagship product and represents the oldest and finest stocks (which are not allocated for single barrels by owner Aaron Chepenik). Each batch is carefully blended for a powerful, rich, complex bourbon character that’s become a staple of many whiskey lovers’ home bars… when they can find it. This tiny bottler in Nevada is definitely one to keep an eye on.

John E. Fitzgerald “Larceny A123” Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($69.99)

93 points Whisky Advocate: “Larceny’s first barrel proof release of 2023 makes a big splash with a bold whiskey that stands among the best bottlings in the series. The nose is layered with sweet cinnamon, oranges, cloves, and a sweet nuttiness. This never hides its proof but is well integrated from its nose through the long finish. On the palate, the nuttiness is even more evident with pistachio ice cream, toasted walnuts, pecan pie, and butterscotch. (SE)” (03/2023)

Cask #85026801

£6,000.00

1973 vintage from Glen Mhor Distillery which closed in 1983 and was demolished in 1988. Highly prized, rare casks having been one of the pioneering distilleries to release single malt whisky in the 1960s.

Shop – Glen Mhor 49yo

Nose: Sweet stewed raisin aromas complement morello cherry and cocoa powder. Treacle toffee develops alongside soft polish and mature oak.

Taste: Seville orange zest combines with brown sugar and berry compote. Notes of baked apple come to the fore accompanied by a hint of menthol.

Finish: Long and full with lingering spice and citrus.

John Birnie and James Mackinlay commissioned Charles C. Doig to design Glen Mhor Distillery which was found in 1892 and constructed at Muirton Basin on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness. I RISE, WE RISE: CHIVAS UNVEILS PORTRAITS OF ICONIC LOCAL FIGURES FROM GLASGOW’S HISTORY ACROSS STRATHCLYDE DISTILLERY – Scotch Whisky News

Three Glasgow-based artists commissioned by Chivas Regal adorn tanks with murals

Blended Scotch whisky Chivas, has partnered with three artists local to Glasgow to create striking murals on the 9.4m tall, rounded tanks at its Strathclyde Distillery, one of oldest grain distilleries in Scotland.

The project, delivered in partnership with Glasgow-based production company artpistol Projects, sees Molly Hankinson, Michael Corr and Rogue One transform the tanks with paintings of iconic local figures, with additional typography woven throughout by artistic signwriter Ellie Mills.

The art initiative was inspired by the close ties parent company, Chivas Brothers has with the Strathclyde Region. The Strathclyde Distillery’s single grain whisky is an essential part of Chivas Regal giving the iconic blend a delicate character that leads to the generously smooth taste synonymous with the brand.

The project is the latest activity under Chivas’ ‘I Rise, We Rise’ platform which demonstrates the brand’s continued commitment to celebrate and elevate the next generation of hustlers who are forging their own paths to success. Each mural pays homage to those who embody this ethos and have uplifted their community along the way. From Margaret Macdonald, an artist said to have helped define the ‘Glasgow Style’ movement of the 1890s-1900s, to Tom McGuire, frontman of 8-piece Glaswegian funk and soul band Tom McGuire & the Brassholes. The final mural celebrates the spirit of human adversity and triumph in overcoming obstacles and setbacks, by paying homage to Mark Coyle’s countless achievements whilst navigating the diagnosis of Perthes disease at an early age which left him wheelchair-bound and with his mobility restricted.

Ali Smith, Founder at artpistol Projects, said:

“Glasgow is known as the place where grit and glamour coexist. It’s the kind of city that gets into your bones, so it comes as no surprise that it teems with creative talent.

“It’s brilliant to be able to work with a Scottish-born global giant like Chivas who really understands this notion and understands the unique market here. They’re just as passionate about uplifting the Glaswegian community as we are, and we can’t wait to see how the finished pieces turn out.”

Nick Blacknell, Global Marketing Director at Chivas, added:

“Chivas and Strathclyde share a long and storied history; one that dates all the way back to the 18th century.

“As a location, it’s close to the hearts of everyone at Chivas and we’re honoured to be able to highlight its importance to us through the creation of these murals. We’re passionate about paying forward the kindness shown to us by the community here, so it felt right that we work with artists who either live nearby or have a clear connection to Glasgow and the Strathclyde region.”

The murals are available to view at Strathclyde Distillery, 40 Moffat St, Glasgow G5 0QB. For more information, please visit Chivas.com/en/stories/strathclyde-mural/ or follow us on Instagram @ChivasRegal.

Laphroaig® unveils packaging redesign in line with long-term sustainability goals – Islay Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig® unveils packaging redesign in line with long-term sustainability goals

The new packaging will reduce CO2 emissions by 30%

Islay (9th August 2023): World-renowned Scotch whisky Laphroaig® today unveiled a refreshed, more sustainable design to its iconic packaging in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of each bottle. The new packaging will reduce the brand’s carbon emissions by 30%, and supports Beam Suntory’s Proof Positive sustainability strategy and long-term commitments to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2040.

The new packaging design retains the recognisable green bottle with distinctive black and white label but replaces the plastic bar top with a beech wood alternative, as well as switching out the secondary packaging tube for a more recycling-friendly carton. The new packaging will result in a reduction of 1,184.74 tons of greenhouse gases per year – equivalent to growing 30,711 saplings over ten years – a significant contribution to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The new carton will also introduce additional quality cues on pack, including embossed Laphroaig lettering on the side as a nod to the brand’s Islay distillery. Further inspiration came from the brand archive, resulting in a refreshed wordmark and the hand-crafted distillery address on the front of pack.

“The Laphroaig distillery has been making whisky for over 200 years, and it is fundamentally important we take steps to reduce our environmental impact and protect the natural resources we rely upon,” said Chris Richardson, VP Global Scotch & Irish Brands, Beam Suntory.  “This new packaging is a good step forward in our global sustainability ambitions, while still maintaining Laphroaig’s true character and exceptionally high quality.”

In addition to its new packaging, Laphroaig will also be renaming ‘Select’ to ‘Oak Select’ to reflect the role of casks in the flavour profile of the whisky. Oak Select will continue to be comprised of spirit taken from five different types of oak cask that are then blended to create the final expression.  There will be no change to the whisky itself.
