Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 496: Nc’nean Aon 17-170 for Belgium – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 496: Nc’nean Aon 17-170 for Belgium

Mark Dermul, Belgian whiskyblogger, tries a single cask of Nc’nean. Mark has been a fan of Nc’nean since the very beginning, that’s a public secret. He was therefore very pleasantly surprised when Premium Spirits – the Belgian importer – invited him to a press dinner on 1 March of this year. In fact, he had the pleasure of sitting at the table next to the Leading Lady of Nc’nean and had a very pleasant and interesting chat with Annabel Thomas all evening long. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a single ex-bourbon cask that was specially selected for the Netherlands and Belgium.

GlenAllachie Regional Releases – Scotch Whisky News

GLENALLACHIE PRESENTS TRIO

OF REGIONAL EXCLUSIVE WHISKIES

Award-winning Speyside single malt brand

announces new Limited-Edition wood-finished whiskies

Independent Scotch whisky producer The GlenAllachie launches its first set of three Regional Exclusive single malt Scotch whiskies finished in unusual oak casks.

Led by universally respected industry veteran Billy Walker, the Speyside distillery has earned a reputation for boundary-pushing cask procurement and maturation policies.

The new trio of Regional Exclusive whiskies include an 11-year-old Marsala Wood Finish for the UK (RRSP £65.99), a 12-year-old Moscatel Wood Finish for Europe (RRSP £67.99), and a 10-year-old Ruby Port Wood Finish for Asia (RRSP £65.99).

Each expression underwent primary maturation in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels before being re-racked into casks hand-selected by renowned wood innovator Walker.

The 11-year-old UK exclusive enjoyed a secondary ageing period of approximately 42 months in barrels that previously held Marsala: a fortified wine produced on the Italian Island of Sicily. The resulting whisky is said to “exude elegant and well-rounded notes of toasted almonds, vanilla custard and apricot jam”.

For Europe, the 12-year-old single malt spent over 42 additional months in wood that formerly aged the aromatic Portuguese dessert wine Moscatel. Delivering distinctive flavour characteristics, the unusual maturation journey has “imparted waves of grapefruit zest, honeysuckle, grape must and poached pear”.

The Asia-exclusive 10-year-old was finished for around 36 months in hogsheads that hosted Ruby Port before being filled with The GlenAllachie. A more youthful, vibrant style of the Portuguese fortified wine, the Ruby Port wood has “added a distinguishing rose hue, as well as complex layers of juicy plums, cocoa powder, ginger and honey-glazed figs”.

Aged within the distillery’s 16 on-site warehouses, the whisky was subjected to regular monitoring until Walker deemed the perfect balance between spirit character and wood influence was achieved.

Once expertly blended, each single malt was bottled at 48% ABV, without added colouring and unchill filtered.

Remarking on the riveting new expressions, Walker comments:

“Maturation is such an imperative part of the whisky-making journey. These three very special single malts underwent an interesting ageing process in the finest wood. In sourcing our casks, we seek out niche, boutique producers that align with our business model: taking a more hands-on approach and prioritising quality.

“We’re thrilled with the resulting whiskies. Each brings a unique identity to be enjoyed across its chosen region: the Marsala finish is smooth and creamy, the Moscatel finish is fragrant and fresh, and the Ruby Port finish is rich and fruity. Each one demonstrates the value offered by quality wood.”

With RRSPs starting at £65.99, The GlenAllachie Regional Wood Finishes will become increasingly available across the UK and Europe from today, while the Asia Exclusive will reach shelves in the coming months.

ABOUT GLENALLACHIE:

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie is led by industry veteran, Billy Walker, who boasts over a half-century’s tenure in whisky. With an emphasis on wood policy, The GlenAllachie’s cask budget for 2023 stands at an eye-watering £2.7m/$3.3m. With 16 on-site warehouses holding over 50,000 casks, we have complete control of the end-to-end maturation process.

The GlenAllachie focuses on quality over quantity, which is why we chose to reduce our production capacity from 4 million to around 800,000 Litres of Alcohol and increase our fermentation period to 160 hours for an ester-rich, fruity spirit.

We believe age and integrity matter, which is why all our whiskies carry an age statement, and are bottled at a minimum of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered for maximum flavour experience.

Our other brands are MacNair’s Boutique House of Spirits – encompassing Lum Reek Blended Malt Scotch Whisky and Exploration Rum – and White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky.

Further information on the distillery and company can be found at www.theglenallachie.com

Heaven Hill Brands and Log Still Distilling LLC Settle Trademark Dispute Over Usage of “Dant” in the Distilled Spirits Industry

Heaven Hill Brands and Log Still Distilling LLC Settle Trademark Dispute Over Usage of “Dant” in the Distilled Spirits Industry

Louisville, Ky. – Heaven Hill Brands, the largest family-owned and led spirits company in the U.S., and Log Still Distilling, LLC, a family-owned-and-operated spirits company in Nelson County, Ky., have finalized a mutually agreeable resolution of their dispute regarding the usage of the “J.W. Dant” trademark and its associated goodwill, which were purchased by Heaven Hill in 1993.

The resolution, which includes an agreed, permanent injunction that was approved and entered by the United States District Court on July 31, 2023, demonstrates that both Heaven Hill and Log Still value the importance of intellectual property rights and maintaining strong, independent brand identities within the spirits industry. In their ongoing efforts to enhance their respective portfolios, the companies have jointly agreed to terms that respect the ownership of existing trademarks and that will prevent any possible confusion around future trademark usage.  Heaven Hill will continue to be the sole producer of J.W. Dant distilled spirits.

“Heaven Hill maintains a product portfolio of respected, historic brands with enduring legacies in the Kentucky Bourbon industry, and continuing that legacy is a priority for our business. This resolution underscores our commitment to protecting our intellectual property and brand equity,” said Jessica Pendergrass, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for Heaven Hill. “This is a collegial industry built on strong relationships. We value Log Still as a partner in the distilling industry, and wish them continued success in their distilling ventures.”

Wally Dant, the founder of Log Still said, “The uniqueness of the bourbon industry is the collaborative work amongst distilleries. Heaven Hill and Log Still have worked together over the past few years on making a difference in the communities we live and work. That is what’s important for each of us. We are glad to resolve this dispute amicably and can now focus more time on developing our distinctive line of products and services. Making memories with family and friends is what our campus is all about. Sharing a good bourbon among friends is simply the result of this resolution. We appreciate the efforts Heaven Hill has made as a fellow family-owned presence in this collective spirits industry and wish them the best in their endeavors. ”

Heaven Hill and Log Still express their gratitude to their customers, partners, and stakeholders for their continued support. They remain committed to providing exceptional products for all who enjoy their spirits, and for all who visit their memorable visitors’ experiences on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®.

ABOUT HEAVEN HILL BRANDS: Founded in 1935, Bardstown, KY -based Heaven Hill Brands (www.heavenhill.com) is the nation’s largest independent, family-owned and led spirits producer and marketer and the world’s second-largest holder of Kentucky Bourbon. Dant Bourbons; Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey; Deep Eddy Vodka; Admiral Nelson’s Rum; Black Velvet Canadian Whisky; Lunazul Tequila; HPNOTIQ Liqueur; Carolans Irish Cream Liqueur, plus the newly-acquired Samson & Surrey portfolio.

ABOUT LOG STILL DISTILLING, LLC: Log Still Distillery is bringing bourbon back to Gethsemane. Each bottle is filled with respect, ever mindful that faith, family, community and bourbon pave the way for future generations. Featured products include the Monk’s Road line of Kentucky bourbons and gins and Rattle & Snap Tennessee Whiskey line. Log Still anchors a pastoral campus that includes an outdoor amphitheater with world-class entertainment, a 20,000-square-foot wedding and events venue, multiple B&B’s, a private train depot, a soon-to-open farm-to-table restaurant and a walking path surrounding a 12-acre fishing lake, making it a one-of-a-kind destination to make lasting memories with family and friends.

We’re super excited to do a part 2 tasting to one we did at the tail end of 2022. Another handful of really cool Hunter Laing whiskies landed recently, so of course we tasted through ’em with our friend Lee (the local importer) and immediately started to conspire about sharing these with a bigger audience. The name of this event may be a mouthful, but trust us… the whiskies are even more so. This range of Old Malt Cask, First Edition and Old & Rare ranges includes 7 single-cask whiskies from Ben Nevis, Knockdhu, Craigellachie, Cragganmore, Tamdhu, Linkwood, and Glen Garioch. Exploring Glen Lomond & Loch Scotia

·     Date: Tuesday, August 29

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $55

·     VIRTUAL TASTING

Yeah, we struggled for a name for this one. Just go with it. Evan is on vacation at the time of this writing, so our funny bones are not being sufficiently tickled at the moment. Anyway… the recent arrival of our brand-spanking-new KWM-exclusive Loch Lomond cask was the catalyst for this tasting. And then it occurred to us that we also have a bespoke Glen Scotia cask. The icing on the cake was the recent arrival of just a wee handful of bottles of the now elusive distillery-bottled Glen Scotia 25-year-old. We immediately fleshed out the range with a couple more official bottlings from each distillery, and voila! The confusingly named ‘Exploring Glen Lomond & Loch Scotia’ tasting was born. Pssst… we promise the drams will be better than the name. Tuesday, August 29th @ 7 PM

·     Date: Wednesday, September 6

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $55

·     VIRTUAL TASTING

Log in, pour your drams and join us from home, the cottage, another country, or work… for the September 2023 Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada Virtual Outturn Tasting. The KWM team will be your guide as you sample through an exciting range of 7 new SMWS bottlings. Wednesday, September 6 @ 7 PM

·     Date: Thursday, September 7

·     Time: 8 PM

·     IN PERSON

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada’s September 2023 Outturn tasting will feature 7 new bottlings. The range will be the same as the virtual tasting the night before but will also include nibbles from our friends at Peasant Cheese and the comradery that can only come from 18 SMWS Members in our tasting room. Please note, we will not be holding back stock of the Outturn bottles specifically to purchase for this in-person tasting, though there will likely be bottles of most whiskies still available.

Thursday, September 7th @ 8 PM (6PM is Sold Out!)

·     Date: Saturday, September 9

·     Time: 5 PM

·     Cost: $45

·     IN PERSON

Andrew Mustard, Brand Ambassador for The GlenAllachie, is swinging into town for our first in-store GlenAllachie tasting in years, so we’ve cobbled together an impressive range, including two different bottlings of the GlenAllachie 10-Year Cask Strength, the 2012 Vintage Cuvee, and the very limited 18 and 21-year-olds. Participants in this tasting, and the virtual tasting a couple of weeks later, will also have the opportunity to enter an exclusive ballot to purchase the 18 and 21-year-olds! Saturday, September 9 @ 6 PM

·     Date: Tuesday, September 12

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $120

·     VIRTUAL TASTING

We’ll provide the bangers, but you’re on the hook for your own mash. If you’re not ‘UK-culinarily-informed’ enough to grab that reference, please excuse the bad dad joke. Nothing to see here. A few new arrivals from the Whisky Trail Silhouette range – Ben Nevis, Caol Ila, Croftengea (peated Loch Lomond), and a 1973 Carsebridge – will be complemented by a teenage Mannochmore from SMOS, a 21-year-old Rosebank(!) and a 44-year-old Bunnahabhain. Yes… 44. This line-up is crazy, and unquestionably one of the most interesting tastings we’ve pulled together in quite some time. Did we mention Rosebank?

Tuesday, September 12th @ 7 PM

·     Date: Friday, September 15

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $30

·     IN-PERSON

We are thrilled to welcome Catherine MacMillan, Kilchoman Brand Manager, for our first in-person Kilchoman Distillery vertical tasting in years. Friday, September 15 @ 7 PM

·     Date: Tuesday, September 19

·     Time: 7 PM

·     VIRTUAL TASTING

Knowing not everyone is able to come down to the shop for an in-person GlenAllachie tasting, we have also decided to offer a virtual tasting with the same lineup. Andrew Mustard won’t be joining us this time, but KWM’s Andrew Ferguson will be hosting with James Bornn, GlenAllachie’s agent extraordinaire. Participants will sample 7 whiskies, including two different bottlings of the GlenAllachie 10-Year Cask Strength, the 2012 Vintage Cuvee, and the very limited 18- and 21-year-olds. Participants in this tasting and the earlier in-person one will also have the opportunity to enter an exclusive ballot to purchase the 18 and 21-year-olds! Tuesday, September 19 @ 7 PM

This is a tasting that will suit both wine wankers and whisky weirdos (we like to think we’re both!), and should leave your head full of nifty little details guaranteed to make you both well-versed and the life of any party (caution, may not do the latter). Learn about the intricacies of Sherry and parlay that into a greater understanding of how Sherry casks impact Scotch Whisky. Thursday, September 21 @ 7 PM

Carl Crafts, Brand Ambassador for Adelphi and Ardnamurchan, will be our special guest as we dig into a range of both independent and distillery bottlings. On the Adelphi side of things, we have selected whiskies from Benrinnes, Caol Ila, the “Highlands”, and Chichibu (yes, you are reading that right!) to sample. We will add to this a selection of whiskies from Ardnamurchan, which is one of the most exciting of the dozens of new distilleries in Scotland. We only received two bottles of the Chichibu, one of which we are opening. The other bottle will be made available for sale by ballot, exclusively to participants in the tasting! The staff here at KWM have a soft spot for the savoury whiskies from the Pulteney Distillery on Scotland’s North Sea coast. With the return of the Old Pulteney 25 Year, and a 1982 vintage Gordon & MacPhail bottling kicking around, there was no better time to pull together an epic vertical of whiskies from the Pulteney Distillery. Participants will sample through 7 Pulteney whiskies, with a collective age of about 130 years… Andrew might even dig up some of his photos from the distillery! Tuesday, October 3rd @ 7 PM

Twenty-five-year-old whisky has become ever more expensive and scarce in recent years. Macallan 25 Year Sherry Oak will now set you back more than $5K, Dalmore 25 Year is not far behind, and even Glenrothes 25 Year is nearly $1700. We could debate whether those whiskies are worth the price, but what we can say for sure is that there is still good value to be had… We’ve put together a range of 8 excellent 25-year-old single-malt Scotch whiskies, all of which are under $800 a bottle. In fact, you could buy the full set of 8 whiskies, for a thousand dollars less than a single bottle of Mac 25… Our range consists of whiskies from Balblair, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Glenfarclas, Glengoyne, Linkwood, Mortlach, and Speyside Distilleries. 200 years’ worth of quarter-century-old malts!
