FRAZZLE DAZZLE
SMALL BATCH SINGLE MALT

REGION: Speyside
CASK TYPE: 1st fill smoked barley wine hogsheads
AGE: 13 years
For this experimental batch, we teamed up with Tempest Brewery in the Scottish Borders. We commissioned Speyside Cooperage to create some new American oak hogsheads with a heavy toast and a medium char. These hogsheads were then sent to Tempest, where they were filled with an off-the-wall smoked barley wine (think 12.5% ABV smoked stout!). After five months, the beer was bottled and the casks were filled with selected un-peated Speyside malts. These whiskies underwent a period of additional maturation for just under 3 years, before being blended together to create this unique whisky.
A REWARD FOR PATIENCE
DISTILLERY 36 RARE RELEASE

REGION: Speyside
CASK TYPES: 1st fill oloroso quarter casks & 2nd fill bourbon barrels
AGE: 10 years
FLAVOUR PROFILE: Deep, rich & dried fruits
From Euan Campbell, SMWS spirits manager: There’s a beautiful balance to this, which was first matured in bourbon hogsheads before we transferred it to 125-litre Oloroso quarter casks that were supplied to us by our partners in Jerez, José y Miguel Martin. After that, we put it back into 2nd fill bourbon barrels that we’d recently emptied, giving it time to relax and marry before bottling. The result is a superb dram with the big, dark and intense flavours you would associate with Oloroso sherry maturation, but with the lush tropical notes from the bourbon casks as well.
