✨ Lindores Abbey Distillery ~ January News – Scotch Whisky News

We hope this finds you well and enjoying the first few weeks of 2023. Helen and I are just back from the Central Florida Highland Games where we were the ‘honoured guests’. The games are extremely popular with visitors coming from all over the States to attend; in fact there were over 30,000 at the event, sharing a passion for all things Scottish and it was a privilege for us to be able to spread the Lindores word to such an engaged audience. Our hosts were incredibly welcoming and keen to promote Lindores at all times for which we were extremely grateful.

Turning to matters closer to home, we are delighted to announce the release of the Friar John Cor Cask Strength Congregation Batch Chapter 1. A combination of Bourbon, Monbazillac, STR and Sherry casks, it is an absolutely delicious dram. Congratulations to Gary, Lorena and the distillery team for bringing it to life, we are sure it’s going to be a great success. It will be available from mid February, from your local stockist.

As we continue into 2023 let’s raise a glass of our award winning Lindores Abbey whisky and toast to a healthy and successful year to come.

DISTILLERY NEWS

Let’s start with the highlights of 2022! They include moving over to Crisp Malting to reduce our road miles; our new warehouses were built; we filled some truly excellent casks; we launched some fantastic bottlings, some as distillery exclusives on sale only in our Visitor Centre, and some as celebration of our monks’ home town of Tiron Gardais; and we had Thomas our Belgian intern exploring alternative uses of draff and distillers’ yeast. We also won some great awards!

Over Christmas we had a well-earned festive shutdown and the time off was enjoyed by all! But what is 2023 bringing? It started with a special run of malt through the distillery: we are running through 10t of Scotch Annat Malted Barley, grown and malted by the Crafty Maltsters over in Auchtermuchty. This is what we would call a heritage grain and I think we will be the first distillery in Fife to use it in a long, long time. It’s not a high- yielding strain, but that’s not why we are running it. Rather, it’s to give us a slightly different flavour profile to be working with. Here we have quality, nurtured materials from the past – on the nose as described by Lorena, very floral and sweet – very much like a wild flower meadow.

Just last week we launched our latest bottling – Friar John Cor Chapter 1 – what a dram that is, a blend of 4 different casks and bottled at cask strength, it’s Lindores at its very best! Here’s to 2023

CASK SAMPLES

The best part of my job is Sensory Analysis, that is my passion, and that is why I chose to study it in my last year of University in Chile. When I arrived in Scotland and discovered the beauty of Scotch Whisky I couldn’t ignore this unique product with all the compounds formed during the process that contribute to its aroma and flavour.

Last month I had the pleasure of trying our Lindores Single Malt matured in different types of casks filled in 2019.

My favourites casks were : Cask# 190699 Ex-Calvados @ 61.7%abv, a French cask with just three years of maturation: evolving as a complex, pleasing Single Malt with a burnished colour, mellow ripe red apples, sweet pears and floral notes on the nose. On the palate, nutmeg, cinnamon spices combined with sweet vanilla , fruity apples, some nuttiness and pleasant dark chocolate on the back of the tongue. Finished with a smooth vanilla and a touch of spice finish. Nice.

The next cask is outstanding : Cask# 190540, ExManzanilla Sherry (Spanish cask subcategory of a Fino Sherry) @ 60.9 %abv: yellow gold in colour, a beautiful cask giving green grapes, with citrus floral notes on the nose; a sea breeze and a subtle oak aroma. A great combination, on the palate releasing clean green fruitiness, sweet orchard fruits and salty marine notes with a hint of vanilla oak. Just right.

Every cask tells its own story; but I must say that Lindores New Make Spirit is getting better and better over the years. The ongoing, developing relationship between whisky and wood in the warehouse is fascinating.

LINDORES WORLDWIDEE

We are working hard to get Lindores to all corners of the globe, and are hoping to be able to give you some good news about the USA in the next few weeks. We’re also about to do a launch in Norway, at the end of February and I recently visited the West Coast of Canada (Vancouver, Vancouver Island, North Edmonton, and Calgary) back in November and spent time with Pacific Wine and Spirits sales team, conducting tastings, and generally educating them on the Lindores brand.

I have also done market visits to Denmark and Germany and I am going back out to Germany again soon, so the word is certainly spreading!

‘The Cask Strength Congregation Batch’
Chapter 1

Our newest release was matured in a blend of Bourbon, Monbazillac, STR, and Sherry casks. As with all Lindores bottlings it has no added colouring, is non-chill filtered and bottled onsite at the batch cask strength of 60.2% ABV. The introduction of the Monbazillac casks gives a sweetness and complexity that compliments perfectly the classic Lindores style.

The design of the unusual black bottle, mirroring the Exclusive 1494 First Release Bottle, draws on several elements of Lindores Abbey’s history, most obviously the dramatic black colour which is inspired by the black cloth tunics worn by the Lindores monks back in 1494. This unique bottle shape is also in homage to the magnificent stone pillars which would have been found throughout the Abbey, the remains of which can still be found in the ruins today.

These bottles will be available from mid February through selected stockists, so get in touch with your local bottle shop to reserve your bottle!

2023 Canadian Whisky Awards Results – Canadian Whisky News

2023 Canadian Whisky Awards Results

VICTORIA, B.C., Jan. 19, 2023 – Canada’s finest whisky is distilled by one of the country’s smallest distilleries.

Results of the 2023 Canadian Whisky Awards were announced on January 19th at the Victoria Whisky Festival in Victoria, B.C. For the first time in the thirteen-year history of the awards, a regional, artisan producer has taken the top spot.

Following a blind tasting by a panel of nine whisky experts, Palm Trees & A Tropical Breeze, distilled by North Vancouver’s Sons of Vancouver Distillery was named Canadian Whisky of the Year, Artisan Producers.

A sweet, fruity whisky, described as spicy, flaming marshmallows, Palm Trees & A Tropical Breeze also took home overall Canadian Whisky of Year, and All-Rye Whisky of the Year.

Pendleton Directors Reserve, a lush, succulent, chest-warming beauty, was awarded Canadian Whisky of the Year, Large Producers. Pendleton, which specializes in blending whiskies that are distilled in Canada, also walked away with Blended Whisky of the Year and Ultra-Premium Whisky of the Year, Multi-Market.

“The industry has come a long way in the last few years, and it’s reflected in both the calibre of submissions and the range of expressions,” says Davin de Kergommeaux, chair of the judging panel and author of Canadian Whisky: The New Portable Expert. “In addition to their strong core range of whiskies, distilleries are producing small batches and limited releases, offering an amazing variety of regional profiles. The world has noticed and so has Canadian whisky’s global fan base.”

Other major winners include Crown Royal, Reifel Rye, Yukon Brewers, Lot No. 40, DEVINE Distillery, and Last Straw Distillery, making a near even split of awards earned by Canada’s largest and artisan distillers.

A list of all medals and awards is available HERE

The Canadian Whisky Awards, held annually since 2010, recognize the very best Canadian whiskies and encourage distillers to maintain the highest quality standards. To qualify, the whisky must be distilled and matured in Canada. The whiskies are evaluated and scored in blind tasting by an independent panel of whisky exports. The Canadian Whisky Awards are fully independent of the Canadian whisky industry.

K&L Exclusives: Outstanding Indiana Rye Discoveries at Excellent Pricing – Indiana Rye Whiskey News

K&L Exclusives: A Pair of Intriguing Indiana Rye Discoveries
“These two exceptional casks of rye whiskey really took me by surprise.”
— David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

Even with all the outstanding exclusive single barrels we bring in, it’s still a rare treat to find a straight rye that impresses us as much as these two casks from Clyde May. Distilled at the famed MGP facility in Lawrenceburg, they’re excellent examples of this renowned Indiana distillery’s signature rye profile, yet they each offer a distinct character all their own.

Clyde May’s “K&L Exclusive” Batch #913 Indiana Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)

K&L Notes: A renowned Alabama moonshiner who perfected the art of distillation and became infamous for his apple-flavored whiskey, Clyde May’s story is one of the most interesting and intriguing in the whiskey world. The modern version of his recipe has been produced legally since 2001, but along with that the company has been buying and bottling straight bourbon for some time now. Like so many of the other independent bottlers of American whiskey, they’re working primarily with the great distillery in Lawrenceburg. While many of our bottlers have lovely bourbons from the excellent distillery, it’s in fact the rye whiskey that makes MGP/Lawrenceburg/Ross & Squib distillery so special. They are exceptionally suited to distilling top-notch rye and have been for many decades. Now Clyde May’s is offering us single barrels of the truly delicious Straight Rye whiskey for the first time ever. These stocks are distilled from the classic 95% rye/5% malt mashbill that MGP made famous. These excellent barrels were distilled on Valentine’s Day of 2017 and bottled on September 15th, 2022 at a wonderful 104 proof.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: January 20, 2023

These two exceptional casks of rye whiskey really took me by surprise. There are so few people offering single barrels of great rye whiskey right now and finding two such high quality yet distinctly different barrels was what really intrigued me about these stocks. Let’s taste! Wow! this barrel is so pungent and open, it’s hard to believe its only five years old. Big notes of sweet oak, dark baking spice, gorgeous citrus oil, sweet herbs, cracked black pepper, subtle dried fruit. On the palate, it’s punchy and dense with big, sweet spice and a tense, heady, herbal character. Expect the richer softer side of rye offering tons of dense baking spice balanced with sweet oak and dried fruit. Not too peppery or dark and surprisingly bright with lots of citrus and pungent poached pear. A very vibrant and exciting new barrel.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: January 20, 2023

This cask is the more herbal, rich, earthy side of MGP rye. If you like the dilly, minty side of Indiana rye, this is the one for you. Let’s taste! Oh, a big oily spice, wild yellow flowers, exotic bark, crushed rock, and sweet vanilla bean. Hints of dill and wild herbs, dark peach compote, tanned hide, gravel, and caramel candies. On the palate, red fruit, licorice, herbal tea, mint, and dried grass. This one is balanced between wild exotic flavors and dark herbal rye. It’s a stark contrast from the sweet, rich notes of the other cask and a welcome departure for those who like a bit more dense dark character in their ryes. This is really solid stuff and hopefully most people will get to try one of each.
