North Uist Distillery Co. “The Casks Moved Fast!”- Scotch Whisky News

Amidst all our mainland adventures, our island team were busy with some very exciting Whisky activity – as last week saw us releasing our very first casks for sale to an intrepid group of Nunton Whisky Founders.

Having planned this activity for many months, it’s fair to say that we were overcome with joy when all of the available casks sold out in only 90 seconds. It’s pretty hard for us to put into words what this means to us. Practically it means we can now begin our whisky journey, but more than that it’s the start of our long held dream to bring Whisky distillation to North Uist, South Uist & Benbecula.

A huge thanks to each and every one of you who has been in touch. This is just the beginning. The Nunton Steadings bell will soon ring again.

Having out-grown his distillery at Upper Drumin George Smith built a new distillery in 1858 at Minore just short distance upstream of the River Livet and which he opened the following year and named Glenlivet Distillery. During the 1850s the Edinburgh firm of Andrew Usher produced the first vatting of malt whisky from a single distillery using a number of different vintages of Glenlivet whisky. Following expansion in 2010 this distillery is now equipped with fourteen stills making it one of the largest malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. The range includes Glenlivet Founders Reserve and Nadurra.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Filey Bay Whisky – Yorkshire Whisky News

https://youtu.be/P42YiFPlrxc

Today I’ve had the joy of meeting (over Zoom) with Morgan McDermott from Filey Bay Whisky in Yorkshire.

Setup in 2016, Filey Bay is a field to glass distillery based on the east coast of Yorkshire. Comprising a range of:

Their Flagship bottle – Personal Favourite.

IPA Cask Finish – Toffee’d and toasty.

Moscatel Cask Finish – Honey in a glass.

STR Rijoca Cask Finish – Spicy plums.

Peated Cask Finish – Subtle saltiness.

A huge selection of flavour to choose from and a brief walk through of the distilleries history and future. My apologies for lack of my camera, Zoom just didn’t want to play fair with me.

Filey Bay has quickly become a must have summer style for me as a result of this tasting, and hopefully this will get some of you into this wonderful English distillery.

Cheers!

Penderyn Distillery Releases First in New Small Batch Series for the U.S. – Welsh Whisky News

PENDERYN DISTILLERY RELEASES FIRST IN NEW SMALL BATCH SERIES FOR THE U.S.

The Limited Release Marries a Selection of Ruby Port and Carcavelos Fortified Wine, ex-Bourbon, and STR (Shave, Toast, Re-Char) Casks

Penderyn, Wales – May 31, 2022: Award-winning Welsh whisky company Penderyn Distillery announces Penderyn USA Limited Release #1, the first of an ongoing series of small batches to be released in the U.S. The rare release of 1,210 bottles comprises Single Malt from four casks: an ex-bourbon barrel, an STR cask (Shave, Toast, Re-Char), and two from Penderyn’s finest sweet Portuguese wine barriques collection (Ruby Port and Carcavelos fortified wine). The limited release, bottled at 50% ABV, is solely available in the U.S. through importer ImpEx Beverages in San Francisco, California.

Penderyn Master Blender, Aista Phillips, has expertly crafted the small batch by marrying a selection of unconventional casks to achieve new and intriguing flavors. “These small batch releases are completely distinct from anything else in our core range of premium single malt Welsh whiskies,” explains Giancarlo Bianchi, Penderyn’s Commercial Director. Adding a distinct touch, 25% of the batch comes from STR (Shave, Toast, Re-Char) casks, a technique that was developed by the late Dr. Jim Swan, a renowned whisky expert and distiller who was instrumental in creating Penderyn’s house style.

Penderyn USA Limited Release #1 is 75% double-distilled in a traditional ‘lantern’ still (which Penderyn acquired in 2014 in order to experiment with) with the remaining 25% distilled in Penderyn’s signature single copper-pot Faraday Still. The limited edition is released in the U.S. as Penderyn gears up to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its new flagship distillery, which opened to the public on June 1, 2021 in Llandudno, North Wales.

The marriage of sweet Portuguese wine and ex-Bourbon casks results in a nose of apples and pears with a creaminess that incorporates caramel and raisins. On the palate, vanilla and honey sweetness with orchard fruits and marmalade are complemented by light notes of oaky spice. Toasted wood dryness with peppery spices linger with the finish.

Limited bottling of 1,210, with a recommended retail price of $110, are on store shelves in CA, MA, NY/NJ, NE, IL, KS, AZ, NV, TX, DC/DE/MD, WA, TN, OR, and MN.

Sotheby’s to Offer Two Ultra-Rare Casks of Whisky from the Fabled Brora and Port Ellen Distilleries – Scotch Whisky News

Sotheby’s to Offer Two Ultra-Rare Casks of Whisky from the Fabled

Brora and Port Ellen Distilleries

Estimated at £700,000 – 1,200,000 Each

Both Casks Presented Alongside Artist Collaborations as well as Unique Experiences

Auction in Partnership with Diageo to Take Place in London on 14 June

During Sotheby’s Jubilee Season

LONDON, 31 MAY 2022 – The names of Brora and Port Ellen are often referenced in the same breath – and with distinct tones of reverence – by whisky aficionados. This summer, Sotheby’s will offer two ultra-rare casks, one from each distillery, from Diageo’s Casks of Distinction programme.* Never to be seen again, these offerings are among the rarest and most valuable casks in existence from Brora and Port Ellen’s dwindling stocks of ghost casks, containing the liquid left behind when the distilleries fell silent. Carrying an estimate of £700,000 to £1,200,000 each, they will open Sotheby’s sale of Scotch Whisky in London on 14 June, with advance bidding open from 31 May. Diageo will donate 5% of the final hammer price from both casks to Care International to support the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky, North America and EMEA, said “This partnership between Sotheby’s and Diageo showcases an unrivalled offering of rare whisky casks at auction. On trying the 1982 Brora I was astounded by its quality – the rich cooked fruit flavours elevating its signature lightly peated character. The Port Ellen is a masterclass in 1970s Islay smoke with significant cask influence, which, especially when from a closed distillery, is precisely the style that the world’s top whisky collectors seek out.”

James Mackay, Head of Rare and Exceptional Spirits at Diageo, said “With the help of two highly accomplished contemporary artists, we are thrilled to offer these casks for sale by Sotheby’s as true works of art.”

The sale of the casks, in partnership with Diageo, is part of Sotheby’s month-long programme of exhibitions and events in its New Bond Street premises marking Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which is taking place from 28 May to 15 June. Two casks will be on display in the galleries, specially loaned for the occasion.

All distilleries from Diageo’s Scotch portfolio are eligible for Casks of Distinction; however, on very rare but cherished occasions, a cask taken from the diminishing stock of casks of the fabled Brora and Port Ellen distilleries are also included. The successful bidders will be invited to further age their casks for up to five years before they are bottled.

Representing the very pinnacle of rare whisky ownership, each cask comes with a unique artistic experience, with the resulting artwork printed on each of the bottles of the cask yield. The new owners will also be given the opportunity to invite up to three guests to join them for a Diageo Rare & Exceptional experience.

Both closed in 1983, Brora and Port Ellen became renowned for the exceptional quality and character of whisky maturing in their shuttered warehouses. Viewed as the lost icons of the whisky world, these two distilleries and whiskies gained legendary status during their closed years. Since it was announced in 2017 that there would be a £35 million investment into their reopening, interest in these whiskies has been reignited.

Brora 1982 Cask of Distinction: The Spirit of Brora in Collaboration with Trey Ratcliff

The highland distillery of Brora – located where land meets sea at the north-eastern edge of Scotland – was reawakened in May 2021 following a three-year restoration process. Renowned photographer Trey Ratcliff, who has dedicated his life to capturing the beauty that exists at the edge of the world, will travel to Scotland for the first time, accompanied by the cask owner on an adventure to capture a portfolio of images that bring to life the landscape that helped shape this exceptional liquid. The cask owner’s selected image will become a large format edition print, in addition to being used to create a set of bespoke labels for the bottles that will be drawn from the cask. Distilled in 1982, the whisky in the cask is estimated to yield 145 bottles.

Speaking on the collaboration, Trey said “My photographs capture moments in time and give those who view them an opportunity to reflect and transport to another place in the world. I’ve dedicated my life to capturing the beauty that exists at the very edge of the world, places where the sky meets the sea, Brora is one such place. I have been longing to travel to Scotland and take in its beautiful landscapes and to do this for the first time, accompanied by someone who appreciates an exceptional whisky like this, will be an epic adventure.”

Port Ellen 1979 Cask of Distinction: Capturing the Light in Collaboration with Ini Archibong

Located on the western edge of the Isle of Islay, or the “Queen of the Hebrides”, Port Ellen is a priceless jewel in Diageo’s crown. Spirit will soon begin to be made at Port Ellen again from Spring 2023. Ini Archibong, the globally recognised designer and artist, will create a unique piece of art capturing the light of Port Ellen and its spirit in coloured glass. The one-off sculpture will be a physical expression of the “Dram and the Water” – representing both the precious nature of the liquid inside the cask and the distillery’s most precious resource. Crafted from Murano Glass and finished in the colours of Islay, the unique sculptural piece will be presented to the cask owner in Port Ellen once the distillery has reopened. Ini will also develop and create a bespoke colour gradient that will be used to design a set of labels for the bottles drawn from the cask. Distilled in 1979, the whisky in the cask is estimated to yield 102 bottles.

Speaking about the artwork, Archibong said “This art piece represents the precious nature of the liquid inside the cask. Unified and juxtaposed with our most precious resource – water – they represent the heart and soul of Islay and her people. Like a precious magic gem precariously holding a finite resource that offers endless memories; this piece is a reminder to its owner of the moment that they captured Islay in a cask, and her spirit reflected on the surface of coloured glass. This artefact is a unique piece. There is only one.”

Port Ellen Distillery

Sotheby’s first whisky auction of 2022 in London will also include a number of bottles of highly collectible fine and rare whisky from both Scotland and Japan, as well as a small selection of vintage Moutai from China.

Whisky of Distinction | Port Ellen & Brora: Casks From A Bygone Era

*Casks of Distinction are unique and rare casks drawn from Diageo’s extensive stocks in Scotland. Each cask is hand selected by master blenders and chosen on the basis of its quality; as such, they represent the most exceptional and singular expression of the distillery’s character.
