Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 446: Nc’nean Huntress

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries Nc’nean’s latest release. This time Anabel and her team opted for a slightly different composition than for their regular batches, namely 61% STR Red Wine Casks and 39% Ex-Bourbon casks. It is also bottled at a slightly higher alcohol percentage. This is the spring whisky par excellence of this young, dynamic distillery that now boasts quite a few loyal followers. The special thing about this whisky is that it was produced with three different yeast strains, one of which is normally used for the production of rum!

CHIVAS BROTHERS INVESTS IN SUSTAINABLE FUTURE OF SCOTCH WITH £88 MILLION EXPANSION OF ABERLOUR AND MILTONDUFF DISTILLERIES – Scotch Whisky News

CHIVAS BROTHERS INVESTS IN SUSTAINABLE FUTURE OF SCOTCH WITH £88 MILLION EXPANSION OF ABERLOUR AND MILTONDUFF DISTILLERIES

CHIVAS BROTHERS, THE SCOTCH WHISKY BUSINESS OF PERNOD RICARD, TODAY ANNOUNCED A £88 MILLION INVESTMENT INTO ABERLOUR AND MILTONDUFF, TWO OF ITS STRATEGIC SINGLE MALT DISTILLERIES. THE INVESTMENT WILL GO INTO UPGRADING SUSTAINABLE DISTILLATION TECHNOLOGIES AT THE SPEYSIDE DISTILLERIES ALONG WITH SIGNIFICANT PRODUCTION CAPACITY EXPANSIONS TO MEET THE GROWING GLOBAL DEMAND FOR SCOTCH.

The distillery expansions will grow Chivas Brothers’ total production by 14 million litres of alcohol per annum. The investment is further confirmation of Chivas Brothers’ commitment to Scotland and a testament to the growing global demand for Scotch whisky which has seen exports increase across all regions, with market gains in Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Asia. In its Half Year results in February, Chivas Brothers announced a net sales increase of +23%, confirming the company’s recovery to beyond pre-Covid levels.

The distillery expansions will also serve to accelerate Chivas Brothers’ ambitious goal of reaching carbon neutral distillation by 2026 with the installation of new bio plants and high-efficiency Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) fan technology for pot still distillation across both sites. This mechanism enables a major energy recovery by compressing the vapor which then rises in temperature and is sent back to heat the stills during the distillation process. Last year, the company announced plans to roll out MVR technology across all viable sites in its distillery portfolio by 2026 following a groundbreaking pilot study at its Glentauchers distillery which resulted in energy reductions of 90% on a single pot still there.

Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers said:

“Scotch has demonstrated its resilience as a category over the past few challenging years and in the process has opened new avenues for growth. This expansion will allow us to increase our volume to capitalise on the increased demand and interest in Scotch, but also supports our drive to reduce emissions in line with our sustainability ambitions. We’re once again betting big on the future of Scotch so we can bring in new consumers to the category and continue to shape a sustainable future of whisky.”

The Aberlour distillery, which has been producing whisky since 1879 will see its production capacity double to 7.8 million litres of alcohol per annum. This additional capacity will support the accelerating global demand for the cult favourite Scotch which continues to be the best-selling single malt whisky in France and has made significant gains across Asia. The distillery will also undergo a significant facelift with an upgraded visitor centre which will draw more whisky fans to the area and boost local tourism. A new still house will be equipped with large windows providing visitors with views into the nearby woods and the River Spey; the water source for the spirit.

Miltonduff’s expansion will consist of a brand new state-of-the-art sustainable distillery built next to the existing facility. The distillery, which will include a bio plant and evaporator, will add 10 million litres of alcohol per annum to the total production capacity. Miltonduff single malt is one of the foundations of Ballantine’s blends and is a key component of other blended whiskies in the Chivas Brothers portfolio. This increased capacity will further accelerate Ballantine’s pace of growth which in HY22 results saw global sales rise by +29%, fuelled by a range of new expressions.

Secretary of State for International Trade, Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP, said:

“Scotch Whisky is a UK exporting success story and this excellent news will see some of the best products made in Scotland, sold to the World – supporting jobs and economic growth and helping us to level up the country.

“It’s great to see Chivas Brothers adopt new ground-breaking energy efficient technology, helping deliver the Government’s Net Zero strategy, and maximising export opportunities through green UK innovation.”

Both sites are expected to be operating at full production capacity by mid-2025.

Cask Whisky Investors Share Excitement for the Latest UK – Mexico Trade Deal – Whisky News

Cask Whisky Investors Share Excitement for the Latest UK – Mexico Trade Deal

On the 20th May 2022, the UK and Mexico kicked off negotiations to expand on the pre-existing trade deal between the nations. This trade agreement is focused upon expanding the ease at which services and goods can pass between countries. For the whisky investment industry this trade agreement will help to further reduce tariffs on scotch whisky, thus increasing the demand for scotch.

Already great strides have been made in boosting the demand for whisky in Mexico, with the nation being the 7th largest consumer of scotch in 2021. Meanwhile in the preexisting trade deal, one of the biggest moves was the approval of a Geographical Indication for scotch, thus protecting the substance from counterfeits. This has meant that the road has been paved for scotch demand to rise rapidly in the world’s 16th largest economy. In fact due to its rapidly growing population and rising incomes, the demand for imports is expected to grow by 35% by 2035.

One simple principle of whisky investment is that when the demand for scotch rises, so does the price of an investment grade cask. Since more people are consuming the scotch, the cask not only becomes rarer, but is increasingly needed to be bottled or blended in order to meet the demand. The main thing holding back the further proliferation of scotch within Mexico were tariffs which prevented all but the wealthiest being able to regularly afford to purchase whisky. With the removal of these tariffs the wider population will be able to purchase whisky at cheaper prices.

While tequila is the dominant spirit within Mexico, there is little competition between scotch and whisky due to differing drinking cultures surrounding the spirits. In fact due to the trends of premiumisation these two alcohols have seen a rapid rise in popularity, due to their unique flavours and the adoption of both into more widespread mixology. This in turn has instead pushed out spirits such as vodka as younger generations turn to these more exotic spirits.

Of such importance is the trade in spirits between these nations that the opening negotiations were held at drinks multinational Diageo’s London offices. Diageo owns some of the largest scotch distilleries on the planet and two of the biggest tequila brands, meaning that the company is well positioned within the booming Mexican spirits market.

The future looks bright for whisky investors as the talks continue, since this will further open up Mexico and the larger Latin American markets to the expansion of scotch whisky. If you wish to find out more about other recent trade negotiations please see our other articles about India and Australia.

We are very excited to be moving forward toward a significant maturation facility to take full advantage of our unique maritime climate.

Investment Phase 2 – Cask Store and Related Developments

We are now making practical progress towards our proposed cask store development and will be focusing on the practical steps required over the summer months.  This phase of our development will require various site visits, design and planning meetings and obviously some initial funding.  We will be seeking to raise a further €750,000 equity investment.

Each existing shareholder will be offered the opportunity to invest and in the event that this is oversubscribed then shares will be allocated on a pro rata basis. The subscription price has not been set at this time, and each shareholder will be notified in more detail over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile in order to progress this exciting phase of our development we have arranged a facility to partially fund the ongoing initial development tasks which has been provided by one of our shareholder directors.

Whiskey Live – Friday – Saturday 10 – 11th June

We are also attending the Dublin Whiskey Live event in the RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion where we will be featuring both our cask-aged gin and 3 SQ. MILES. Please drop in if you are planning to attend.

Caring for our Swallows

There are various nesting areas around the distillery in some of the old buildings left over from the fish farming days. We have come to appreciate our swallows and to look forward to their return each year. Since some of these buildings will no longer be accessible to them, we have created alternative nesting facilities that are out of harm’s way. We hope that our swallows will appreciate their new homes.

Since this will be significant marketing opportunity in the USA we are currently doing everything we can to secure distribution in that market.

Cape Clear Island Lavender Project

We are delighted to be associated with a visionary project spearheaded by Joe O’Driscoll and Mike Daly to develop a new natural resource based and sustainable industry on Cape Clear Island. This is to promote the cultivation of Lavender and its many uses in a wide range of artisan and craft projects. To test the market some of these products are currently available in the Island Craft Shop and are already proving their popularity.  We have allocated our ½ acre field surrounding our well for Lavender cultivation but plan to install a picnic table in what should become a most pleasant and fragrant spot.
