The Glencairn Glass launches its second crime short story competition – Scotch Whisky News

The Glencairn Glass invites writers to compose Scottish themed crime stories for its second short story competition

Last year the world’s favourite whisky glass – The Glencairn Glass – launched its first ever crime short story competition attracting entries from talented crime writers across the globe. The competition is being launched again this year, in partnership with the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival and Scottish Field Magazine, with the theme; “A crime story set in Scotland”.

Over the past three years The Glencairn Glass – produced by the Scottish family-run glassware company Glencairn Crystal – has supported and celebrated Scottish crime writing talent working closely with the Bloody Scotland team to sponsor their prestigious McIlvanney and Bloody Scotland Debut crime-writing prizes. Its inaugural short story competition was launched last year to build on this creative collaboration.

This year’s competition opens for entries on 18th October and runs until 31st December.  Both experienced and novice crime writers are invited to submit their stories, in no more than 2000 words, around the theme: “A crime story set in Scotland”.

The first prize winner will receive ÂŁ1000, the runner up will be awarded ÂŁ500. Both will also receive a set of six bespoke engraved Glencairn Glasses. The winning entry will be published in Scottish Field Magazine in spring 2023 and both stories will be published online at the Scottish Field website, as well as the Glencairn Glass website.

The competition judging panel will comprise Tariq Ashkanani, whose debut novel Welcome to Cooper won this year’s Bloody Scotland Debut Award 2022, and Sharon Bairden, an established book reviewer and author of psychological thrillers; Sins of the Father and You Need Me.  The third judge is Glencairn Crystal’s marketing director Gordon Brown, who has written ten crime novels with his latest – ‘Any Day Now – out now. Gordon is also one of the founding directors of the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival.

Gordon Brown commented: “The response to last year’s inaugural short-story competition was fantastic. I’m looking forward to celebrating all of this year’s entries with a wee dram in a Glencairn Glass.”

Last year’s inaugural competition was won by Brid Cummings, a fiction writer and occupational therapist, based in South Australia. Her winning story – Halmeoni’s Wisdom – was a dark tale of human trafficking, illegal trade and a desire for freedom.

Brid commented: “Winning the inaugural Glencairn Glass Crime Short Story Competition was a fantastic experience – not only did it provide an opportunity to build my profile and connect with other crime writers, it also gave me the confidence to finish my psychological suspense novel, which has recently gained 3rd prize in the Yeovil Literary Prize. I would highly recommend this competition to anyone wishing to start a career in crime writing.”

Bloody Scotland’s Festival Director, Bob McDevitt, said: “At Bloody Scotland we are passionate about supporting new writing and encourage aspiring writers to seize this fabulous opportunity. A short story is a great stepping stone to writing a novel. Whatever your background or experience we encourage you to give the Glencairn Glass short story competition a go!”

All short story entries must be submitted at www.whiskyglass.com/crime-short-story-competition with the competition closing at midnight on the Saturday 31st December 2022. Details can also be found at www.scottishfield.co.uk. The winners will be announced in March 2023.

Imperial 42 Year Old – 1979 | Cask 5619 | Private Collection BY GORDON & MACPHAIL – Scotch Whisky News

ÂŁ2,998.00

Another incredible old and rare single malt whisky that Gordon & MacPhail sourced from their magnificent warehouses, then released as part of their recently launched Recollection Series. This well aged Imperial was distilled in 1979 and matured in single cask #5619 for 42 years, a Private Collection release, only 61 decanters filled at 49.2% vol.

Nose

Sweet honeycomb notes combine with vanilla custard and a subtle hint of beeswax polish. Cocoa powder develops alongside pecans and soft baked apple.

Palate

Ripe red apples intertwine with clove-studded tangerine. Malted biscuit flavours come to the fore accompanied by chocolate-covered hazelnuts and faint Seville orange zest.

Finish

A full and long finish with black pepper and light herbal tones.

Imperial is a lost Speyside distillery but one that has a growing reputation thanks to a series of solid releases. Once opened, the true quality of its whisky becomes apparent and begs the question why it is no more?

K&L Exclusive: Single-Cask Wheated Bourbon for Under $60 – Wheated Bourbon News

Knockout K&L Exclusive: Wheated Bourbon at Incredible Pricing
Rebel “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #7903533 Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)
“This is an absolute home run for those that like to drink their whiskey over ice and explore all its nuances and evolution.” — Andrew Whiteley, K&L Spirits Buyer

In a category that often stumps even the most astute and savvy whiskey aficionados, this K&L Exclusive Cask is a welcome discovery. When wheated Kentucky bourbon does come across our radar, it’s usually in the form of a highly coveted specimen with an astronomical price tag. However, from time to time we get a jaw-dropping little number like this one from Rebel, at a price that invites any die-hard wheated fan to stock the bar in multiples. Bottled at 60% ABV, it’s got the stuffing and backbone to hold up underneath the wealth of fruit, vanilla, and quintessential wheaty sweetness that comes along in wave after wave. We were fortunate to score a significant quantity out of this barrel, so collectors, cocktail fans, and whiskey mavens alike will want to go big at our incredible price of just $54.99. After all, we never know when we’ll see another opportunity like this again.

Rebel “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #7903533 Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)

K&L Notes: High-proof, wheated bourbon is back on the menu! Rebel barrels offer one of the rare opportunities to get your hands on that sweet, sweet Kentucky wheated bourbon without paying through the nose for the unicorns that drive the category. It’s unfortunate that Rebel has made the choice to bottle these with a giant “Cask Strength” on the label when all of the barrels are proofed to 60% ABV, but no matter. It’s still plenty high, and those that prize the sweet, creamy flavors but want a good kick will find it here at a reasonable price. Barrel #7903533 was filled on 1/16/18 and dumped in Q3 of 2022.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 05, 2022

Mellow gold in color. The aromas are soft and approachable with a distinct kick of alcohol underneath. It’s creamy and shows a fruitiness that is akin to the fruit flavors sometimes found in a cup of light-roasted coffee. The palate is round but actually feels a bit choppy at 120 proof. With a bit of water, it presents more true to form for the category—sweet vanilla, fresh cream, and marmalade. The citrus and apple peel come forward on the nose and palate, and it is transformed. This is an absolute home run for those that like to drink their whiskey over ice and explore all its nuances and evolution.

Austin Jenkins | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 04, 2022

Maple syrup, brown sugar, allspice, and cinnamon on the nose. Honestly, I had found it concerning I could catch all this right from the first pour—the bouquet was practically jumping out at me. However, as I brought it closer it wasn’t the harsh bite of ethanol that greeted me but rather a clear preview of the flavors I’d get to experience. At 60% ABV, the texture on this is insane. Supremely smooth with absolute clarity in the translation from aromas to flavors. Considering the quality and the value on this bottle, it’s a steal. Waste no time on tossing this into your cart. Once folks know what we have it, it’ll be gone in a flash.
