Kensington Wine Market Malt Messenger No. 135 by Andrew Ferguson – New Whiskies & New Tastings! – Whisky News

It is hard to believe that is has been nearly a month since the “Dodge Ram Drive-In”… Things have returned to a relative normal over the last few weeks. We’ve prettied up the temporary entrance a little and we have pulled the store back together, as much as we can.

Dealing with all this has been more than a little time-consuming, and as a result, this newsletter is about 3 weeks later than it should be. We have added some long-promised new tastings to the schedule, and I’ve included details on some of the new whiskies that have trickled into the shop over the last 4 weeks.

As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the point of sale at KWM will be taken as correct. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or requests (but online ordering works too, in fact, it might be faster…).

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson

GlenDronach Port Wood is Back

This limited edition GlenDronach has been finished in carefully selected Port Pipes, and has been bottled at 46%.

Producer Description

“The GlenDronach Port Wood is inspired by the historical import of casked Port into Scotland during the 19th Century. During the 1800s, Port was ‘de rigueur’, and many of the finest Port pipes would travel from Portugal, down its Douro River, destined for the wine cellars of Scotland’s gentry.

“Whilst many years have since passed, Portugal’s majestic Douro Valley is still renowned for its exceptional Port. We have selected some of its finest Port pipes to enrich The GlenDronach for a second maturation period Our Master Blender has expertly combined the whisky from these Port pipes, to create a fruit filled expression, with layers of ripe berries rolling into its signature long, lingering finish.”

GlenDronach Port Wood – 46% – Finished in Port Casks – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Breathe in delightful waves of Victoria plum, bramble and strawberry jam with top notes of cherry blossom and honeysuckle on a base of sandalwood and ginger. Taste: Layers upon layers of rich fruits. Sip blackberry and roasted apple crumble with freshly baked gingerbread, developing into a baked orange and black cherry back note. Finish: Savour orange peel, sultana and cherry cake lingering into the richly fruity finish.” – $135

A 10 Year Old!

A mariage of whiskies distilled in 2011 and 2012, including both lightly and heavily peated mashes, as well as a blend of two sour mashed from 2011. This is an exciting release from Two Brewers as it is a bonafide 10 year old, with 1/3 of the whisky 10 years old and the rest even older.

Triple-distilled Irish single malt matured exclusively in sherry casks.

Producer Description

“This exquisite, triple-distilled single malt is matured only in select handpicked Spanish sherry butts, which have previously been seasoned with the finest Oloroso sherry. The expression is distilled without chill filtering as nature intended and at a distinctive 46% ABV.”

Writer’s Tears Red Head – 46% – Sherry Butts – Producer Tasting Note: Nose: Orange peel, dried fruits & sherry plums. Taste: Nutty Oloroso, spicy raisins & creamy oak. Finish: Long & complex with a flourish of orange.” – $81.99

2nd Chance Limited Edition Nikka Whiskies

We received a little more of the Nikka Limited Editions which turned the tables on peated. There is a peated Miyagikyo and an unpeated Yoichi.

1. Nikka Miyagikyo Peated Limited Edition – 48% – Producer Description: “This limited edition of Miyagikyo single malt was introduced in 2021 as the first of the “Nikka Discovery” series. In anticipation of Nikka Whisky’s 90th Anniversary, the series offers an inside look at the various experiments in the whisky-making process that Nikka has practiced over the years. This expression is crafted solely from batches of peated malt, offering a significant distinction from the “light and fruity” image of Miyagikyo. It showcases the exquisite combination of bold, distinctively peaty notes while leaving its signature estery hint in the aftertaste.” – $240 – Limit 1 Per Customer!

2. Nikka Yoichi Unpeated Limited Edition – 47% – Producer Description: “This limited edition of Yoichi single malt was introduced in 2021 as the first of the “Nikka Discovery” series. In anticipation of Nikka Whisky’s 90th Anniversary, the series offers an inside look at the various experiments in the whisky-making process that Nikka has practiced over the years. This expression is comprised solely of unpeated malts as opposed to the preconceived “peaty” image of Yoichi. It offers a delicate balance of bright fruitiness and rich mouthfeel, along with its distinctive smokiness generated by coal-fired distillation.” – $240Limit 1 Per Customer!

A Few New Tastings

The first isn’t new, but we have added space for it, as we were able to source more bottles of most of the whiskies.

Mo’ Whisky FOMO – No Fooling!

·     Date: Friday, April 1

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $50

·     Pick-Up Date: Ready Now!

!!!MORE SPACES ADDED!!! There was so much FOMO surrounding our last Whisky FOMO tasting that we knew there would need to be another… and then some other limited whiskies fell into our lap, and it seemed we had no choice but to double down on the FOMO. We would have announced this tasting 2 weeks ago, but then the sample bottle shortage struck. We were starting to face some FOMO ourselves… but thankfully we have hit the sample bottle motherload! This time around we have a trio of Bunnahabhains (18, 2008 Manzanilla & Aonadh), Deanston 2008 Oloroso, Laphroaig Cairdeas 2021, Tobermory 2004 Oloroso, GlenAllachie 18 Year & the Glenmorangie A Tale of Winter. Not all of these bottles will only be offered to participants of the tasting, but for some of them, like the Laphroaig, GlenAllachie and Bunnahabhain 2008 that will be the case . In any case we will hold back a 6-12 bottles of each of the other whiskies just for participants in the tasting. The FOMO was so strong for this tasting, we had to double it, but don’t worry we got a bit more of the whiskies too. Friday April 1, 7 PM..

At Last, The Fourth Rose Has Landed! Small Batch Select Completes the Four Roses’ UK Line-Up – American Whiskey News

At Last, The Fourth Rose Has Landed!

Small Batch Select Completes the Four Roses’ UK Line-Up

Two years after it launched Stateside, Four Roses Small Batch Select has made it to the UK, completing the brand’s permanent line-up as the ‘Fourth Rose’.

The UK is the only market outside the US where the bourbon is available. Limited to just 3,000 bottles, it arrives 15 years after Four Roses’ last line extension (Small Batch). It’s also the first non-chill filtered bourbon to be added to the distillery’s permanent line-up. Previously, only Limited Editions were non-chill filtered.

It will be distributed, as ever, by long-standing UK partner and 2021 IWSC Spirits Distributor of the Year, Spirit Cartel.

133-year-old Four Roses remains the only bourbon distillery that combines two mash bills with five proprietary yeast strains to produce 10 distinct recipes. Six of these – all aged for between six and seven years – were selected and mingled by Master Distiller Brent Elliott to create Small Batch Select.

Four Roses recipes are described by a four letter ‘code’ – each indicating the production facility, the mash bill, the spirit (always straight whiskey) and the yeast strain. In this instance, they are: OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK AND OESF (see notes below).

Select represents the most significant addition to Four Roses since Elliott took the position in 2015. Named Master Distiller/Blender of the year at 2020’s ‘Icons of American Whiskey’ awards, Elliott says he’s crafted a bourbon that: “Showcases bourbon recipes and flavours that aren’t as forward-facing in the rest of our line-up. It’s an extension of what we do well at Four Roses – balancing candied fruit with warmth and spice and enjoyable to both connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.”

Tasting notes:

On the nose, raspberries, clove and nutmeg. As it hits the palate, it opens into flavours of apricot, ripe berries, vanilla and light oak. The finish lingers with notes of spearmint and a touch of cinnamon.

Weighing in at 52% ABV, Small Batch Select has an RRP of £58.00/75cl. High-res visuals: https://we.tl/t-88igkG6ZEO

  1. All Four Roses’ Limited Editions are non-chilled filtered. Select is the first permanent addition to its line-up that’s non-chill filtered.
  2. Four Roses recipe code: The first and third letters always remain the same (‘O’ for Four Roses, ‘S’ for straight whiskey), while the second pairing (second and fourth) show which of two mash bills are used – ‘E’ for low-rye (20% rye/75% corn/5% malted barley) or ‘B’ (35%/60%/5%) – and the yeast strain employed. The latter could be one of five – ‘V’ (delicate fruit); ‘K’ (slight spice); ‘O’ (rich fruit); ‘Q’ (floral essence) and ‘F’ (herbal notes). 3. Four Roses permanent line-up: Original (Yellow Label); Single Barrel; Small Batch; Small Batch Select.

Glenallachie Distillery is a Speyside distillery sitting on the eastern edge of Ben Rinnes mountain where it is rather exposed to the elements and is often to be see sitting within the snowline. A modern building and its architect William Delmé-Evans created a distillery which is rather pleasing on the eye. Glenallachie was commissioned in 1967 with two stills which increased to four in 1989 in order to meet blenders ever increasing demand for Glenallachie malt whisky. Whilst official releases are few independent releases are more numerous with those from Signatory Vintage and Cadenheads proving popular.

Lindores Abbey Distillery Exclusives – Scotch Whisky News

DISTILLERY EXCLUSIVES

As a small, family run Scottish distillery, we wanted to be able to find a way to keep the distillery alive and productive during the quieter months, when visitors can be a bit scarce on the ground. With that in mind we decided to ensure that we will always have some single cask distillery exclusive bottlings available, just for pilgrims who make their way to the Spiritual Home of Scotch whisky. These bottles are not available online and cannot be bought over the phone or set aside.

Our next planned releases will be on 9th March 2022, when we will release two Distillery Exclusives – Cask 180074 Monbazillac Wine Barrique, which is outstanding for its age and Cask 180235 Thiron French Virgin Oak Hogshead, which is made from wood that was grown less than 1 mile from the town of Thiron where the original abbey monks came from.

So, if you would like to visit us for a Distillery Tour or to pick up a bottle, our Winter hours are 1st November – 13th March: Open Wednesday-Sunday (Closed Monday & Tuesday). Distillery Tours are available at 11am and 2pm, please book in advance.

Summer Hours: 14th March – end October. Open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm | Distillery Tours are available at 10am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm, please book in advance.

Refreshments are available if pre-booked.

Lost Lantern’s New Collection Highlights Tradition & Innovation – American Whiskey News

Lost Lantern Spring 2022 Single Cask Collection Highlights Tradition & Innovation

March 1, 2022—Lost Lantern, the new independent bottler of American whiskey that launched less than 18 months ago, is pleased to announce their Spring 2022 collection, featuring four limited edition single casks from four celebrated distilleries: Smooth Ambler in West Virginia, Westward in Oregon, Frey Ranch Distillery in Nevada and Spirit Works in California.

Beginning March 9, the Spring 2022 single cask collection will be available for sale on LostLanternWhiskey.com and Seelbachs.com. All offerings are bottled at cask strength, are non-chill-filtered and have natural color.

  • 2022 Single Cask #1: Smooth Ambler West Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey (195 btls): SRP, $80
  • 2022 Single Cask #2: Westward Oregon Single Malt Whiskey Finished in Chardonnay Cask (272 btls): SRP, $130
  • 2022 Single Cask #3: Frey Ranch Distillery Nevada Four Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey (188 btls): SRP, $100
  • 2022 Single Cask #4: Spirit Works California Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in a Sloe Gin Cask (207 btls): SRP, $100

Lost Lantern’s Spring 2022 Single Cask Collection showcases American whiskey’s simultaneous embrace of tradition and innovation. “This group of distilleries is continually pushing the boundaries of American whiskey and exploring new ways of making whiskey in many different forms,” commented Lost Lantern Co-Founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski. “The Spring Collection includes our first single casks from Frey Ranch, one of the only estate distilleries in the country, and Westward, one of the creators of modern American single malt, as well as our second Smooth Ambler West Virginia wheated bourbon and a unique sloe gin-finished rye whiskey from Spirit Works in California.”

Single casks are an essential piece of the Lost Lantern model, inspired by the long tradition of independent bottlers in Scotland. These highly limited, one-of-a-kind single casks consist of unique and deeply expressive whiskies produced by some of the finest distilleries in the United States. Since their debut in October 2020, Lost Lantern has released 22 single casks from Santa Fe Spirits (NM), Cedar Ridge (IA), New York Distilling Company (NY), Ironroot Republic (TX), Whiskey Del Bac (AZ), Balcones (TX) Watershed (OH), Boulder Spirits (CO), Spirit Works (CA), St. George Spirits (CA), McCarthy’s (OR), Smooth Ambler (WV), Starlight (IN), Westward (OR), and Frey Ranch Distillery (NV).

In addition to the single cask releases, Lost Lantern’s flagship blend, American Vatted Malt Edition No. 1 (SRP $120) is available. Recently named ‘Best American Blended Malt’ at the 2022 World Whiskies Awards, it was created with some of the biggest names in American single malt (Balcones in TX, Copperworks in WA, Santa Fe Spirits in NM, Triple Eight in MA, Westward in OR, and Virginia Distillery Co. in VA). American Vatted Malt represents collaboration and community amongst distillers and crafters who share the vision of bringing American whiskey into the light it deserves.

ABOUT LOST LANTERN’S SPRING 2022 SINGLE CASK COLLECTION

Lost Lantern single casks show that the best whiskey reflects where it’s made, how it’s made, and who made it, and demonstrate that compelling whiskey comes from all across the United States.

2022 Cask #1: Smooth Ambler West Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(195 btls | 123 Proof): SRP, $80

This is the second of a pair of bourbon casks Lost Lantern selected from Smooth Ambler Spirits in Maxwelton, West Virginia. Smooth Ambler has long been on the vanguard of sourcing and blending whiskey with transparency and integrity. They’ve also been distilling and aging their own whiskey as they forge a new whiskey tradition in West Virginia. Distilled on Smooth Ambler’s own column still in West Virginia, it was aged in a 53-gallon barrel for 5 years. The nose has notes of toasted almond, white chocolate, and cranberries. The palate is rich and spicy, with clove, black cherry and deep oak flavors.

2022 Cask #2: Westward Oregon Single Malt Whiskey Finished in a Chardonnay Cask

(272 btls | 121 Proof): SRP, $130

Known for pushing the boundaries of craft spirits for almost two decades, Westward in Portland, Oregon has created a new style of American single malt built on the brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest. This single malt was made from 100% two-row malted barley grown in the Pacific Northwest. It was aged for 28 months in a new oak cask, then finished for 20 months in an Oregon Chardonnay cask. It has a structured and well-rounded palate with a big malty flavor that includes hints of white flowers, toasted pecans, and fresh pears. It is reminiscent of a meadow in the first days of fall.

2022 Cask #3: Frey Ranch Distillery Nevada Four Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(188 btls | 124 Proof): SRP, $100

Frey Ranch, located in a unique farming oasis in the watershed of Lake Tahoe in northern Nevada, is where Colby and Ashley Frey have transformed their fifth-generation family farm into one of the most exciting distilleries in the country. Committed to doing things the right way, no matter how long it takes, Frey Ranch is one of the only true estate distilleries in the U.S. This cask is a 5-year-old straight bourbon whiskey made entirely from grain grown at Frey Ranch. It has spicy, earthy fruit flavors, with notes of black cherry and caramel vanilla creams. It is Lost Lantern’s first Nevada whiskey.

2022 Cask #4: Spirit Works California Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in a Sloe Gin Cask

(207 btls | 113 Proof): SRP, $100

Located in the heart of Sonoma wine country, Spirit Works is a family-run distillery built from the ground up with sustainable practices in mind. Highly awarded and respected, the distillery also has one of the very few female-led distilling teams in the United States. Most importantly, they make wonderful spirits like whiskey and gin. This special whiskey was made by finishing straight 2-year-old Spirit Works rye whiskey for an additional year in a cask that previously held the distillery’s sloe gin. The finish adds complex flavors of strawberry, raspberry, and juniper to the underlying spice, vanilla, and oak notes, making this whiskey similar in flavor to the iconic cocktail, the Boulevardier.
