BOWMORE® ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY DEBUTS ANNUAL 30 YEAR OLD RELEASE – Scotch Whisky News

BOWMORE® ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY DEBUTS ANNUAL 30 YEAR OLD RELEASE

A Celebratory Spirit Definitively Shaped By Time From One Of The World’s Oldest Maturation Warehouses

Islay, Scotland (January 2021) – Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky has unveiled its first annual release 30 Year Old in celebration of how time shapes the exceptional Bowmore character and bringing a new aged expression to the global portfolio.

For more than 240 years, Bowmore Distillery has captured the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. This single malt harnesses the power of time in every single drop, which tells a story of the past that’s savored in the present. This a single malt defined, shaped and crafted by time.

Distilled in 1989, this rare single malt whisky has been carefully nurtured for three decades in Bowmore’s finest Sherry hogsheads and Bourbon barrels. It is matured in the legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest maturation warehouses. Selected from just two casks each year, this is an exceptional single malt that embodies the last thirty years at the very core of its character.

Bottled at a cask strength of 45.3% alcohol by volume, this 30 Year Old is a celebration of Bowmore’s rich fruity and subtly smoky style. With a burnished gold natural color, this whisky offers up aromas of heather, bananas, peaches, pineapple, vanilla and butterscotch. While on the palate, tropical fruits and honey sweetness unite with subtle peat smoke and hints of eucalyptus, ensuring a warming and lingering finish.

“By adding an ongoing 30 Year Old Bowmore to the portfolio, we are able to showcase how vital the length of time spent in casks shapes and influences our spirit, making it even more exceptional and full of character,” said David Turner, Bowmore Distillery Manager. “Each annual release will tell the rich story of Bowmore, but importantly each will have their own unique style and character. As for this release, this is another perfect example of classic Bowmore but with boundless depth and intrigue reflecting the long standing interaction of spirit and wood.”

With only 2,580 bottles available globally as of late 2020, Bowmore 30-Year-Old is inspired by the terrain that surrounds the Bowmore Distillery and the legendary landscape that defines our whisky. Capturing the art of time, the bottle and box containing this whisky take cues from the detailed markings on driftwood and the refined polish of sea glass, reflecting its eternal connection with Islay.

Bowmore® 30-Year-Old is available from January 2021 with an SRP of $2,500 in the U.S.

Tasting notes: Bowmore 30-Year-Old – 45.3% ABV

COLOR: Burnished gold

NOSE: Heather honey, bananas and peaches, with pineapple, vanilla and butterscotch

TASTE: Tropical fruits with honey sweetness, subtle peat smoke and hints of eucalyptus

FINISH: Mouth warming, with ripe fruits lingering on the tongue

ABOUT BOWMORE

Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Time is savored at Bowmore and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest maturation warehouses, is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavors until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore® is “Time, Savoured®” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

Bowmore USA domestic product range: Bowmore 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old.

NEW THE GLENLIVET FILM SMASHES CONVENTIONS OF THE PAST TO FORGE A NEW PATH IN THE SCOTCH WHISKY CATEGORY – Scotch Whisky News

NEW THE GLENLIVET FILM SMASHES CONVENTIONS OF THE PAST TO FORGE A NEW PATH IN THE SCOTCH WHISKY CATEGORY

The Glenlivet has unveiled the next instalment of its ‘Original By Tradition global campaignputting the great taste of the whisky firmly in focus as The Glenlivet builds on its ambition to open up the single malt Scotch category.

The new film  launching across TV and digital in Canada in November before rolling out to other markets including the US, UK, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong – builds on the brand’s mindset of ‘originality’ that has seen The Glenlivet breaking traditions to set new standards in whisky since 1824.

While the Original By Tradition launch film took viewers on a journey through the brand’s pioneering heritage, the new instalment ups the ante with an even bolder and more visually dramatic film which takes viewers on a journey with founder and true original, George Smith, as he follows the legacy of his life’s work – his The Glenlivet single malt – through to today.

The opening scene sees George Smith back in his 1800s bothy in Scotland, establishing himself as an original thinker and defining the Speyside style of whisky, where The Glenlivet began. With a lurch the ad places a determined Smith striving forward on a moving treadmill which is constantly throwing up challengesdemonstrating how his drive and vision went against the norm of the time.

Smith’s challenges initially take the shape of men who represent the strict norms and rigid traditions of whisky fundamentalistsfrom a time when the traditional style of whisky was harsh and smoky. We see how Smith has created a unique smooth style, before facing off against a wall of mirrors reflecting the poor imitations that tried to copy his style of whisky and claim the famous The Glenlivet nameFastforward and Smith stands above these traditionalists and imitations, comfortable in the legacy of his original creation and smashes through a final wall, releasing the delicious tasting notes and smooth taste of The Glenlivet in a vibrant, kaleidoscope of colours and ingredients that capture the essence of his whisky. The final scene finds Smith arriving in a modern bar scene to see how his legacy is still setting new standards across the worldinviting people to enjoy single malt whisky in different ways, whether neat, part of a cocktail in a social settingor even as one of the recent The Glenlivet cocktail capsules.

“Our new film celebrates the original thinking of our founder George Smith and the legacy he left us, that compels us to keep innovating and pushing boundaries in the category. We have brought to life Smith’s vision with innovations such as the much discussed The Glenlivet Capsule Collection, The Glenlivet 14 Year Old Cognac Cask finish and our most recent release, The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve, finished in Caribbean Rum Barrels. Maintaining the original style of The Glenlivet whisky will always be our key focus and that’s why the whisky is the real hero of this film” said Miriam Eceolaza, Director of The Glenlivet.

The Original by Tradition campaign launched globally last November and coincided with the release of The Glenlivet’s new modern, bold and vibrant packaging.

The Glenlivet developed the new campaign in collaboration witCrispin Porter Bogusky London and Director Tom Noakes, who had previously directed the original campaign film.

Whisky Intel is playing catch up, this appears as a matter of record.

A FEW OF THE BEST DEALS

There are some phenomenal deals this weekend. For the list of everything discounted by 15-40% see the PDF linked below. But if you’ll indulge us, there are a few highlights we’ve showcased below!

Tomatin Contrast

This is a very interesting two half bottle release from Tomatin Distillery which shows the contrast between ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels and their influence on Scotch. The disitllery vatted whiskies from 4 decades, and then further matured it in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before bottling at 46%.

Was $210 – SAVE 35% – Now $136.49

Jura Seven Wood

Not content with double wood or triple wood, Jura has gone right to SEVEN WOOD with this bottling. Not just a made up golf club, the Jura Seven Wood Single Malt Scotch comes from the Jura distillery on – get this – the Isle of Jura. The Jura Seven Wood is composed mostly of unpeated Jura Single Malt plus a small portion of peated Jura as well. It is aged in a combination of American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels and SIX different French Oak Barrels. Bottled at 42%.

Was $122 – SAVE 35% – Now $79.29

Port Askaig 100 Proof

Port Askaig is a line of mystery Islay single malts. The whiskies are reputed to come from the Caol Ila distillery. The 100 Proof is a no age statement whisky bottled at 57.1% (100 British Proof). It is named for Islay’s ancient ferry and fishing port on the island’s north-east coast.

Was $80 – SAVE 25% – Now $59.99

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year

The Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban recently evolved from a 12 year old, into a 14 Year. Matured initially in ex-Bourbon, the wine is finished in Port casks before bottling at 46%. This whisky is replete with notes of chocolate and orange, which is derived from its time finishing in port casks.

Was $97 – SAVE 25% – Now $72.74

Craigellachie 13 Year

Part of the Last Great Malts series from Bacardi/Dewar’s – this 13-year-old from Craigellachie Distillery is bottled at 46% ABV. This 13yr old along with the rest of the Craigellachie official prime-numbered lineup was introduced in 2014. The whisky was a hit in our 2020 KWM Whisky Calendar, and is very good value at $80/bottle. At 30% off it is a steal!

Was $80 – SAVE 30% – Now $55.99

Compass Box GKS Glasgow KWM Cask

Looking for something both sherried and peaty, this ticks both boxes, and it’s really elegant!

This is our third KWM exclusive Compass Box Blend, and it is one for the peat heads! It is also our second marrying cask from the Great King Street line – this time from the Glasgow Blend – which means it has a bit of sherry cask influence and a dash of peat or more as well! Bottled at 49%, the whisky is the 2018 Glasgow Blend, finished for just under 2 years in a second fill Sherry Butt from the Craigellachie Distillery.

Was $94 – SAVE 25% – Now $70.49

Talisker Port Ruighe

Double matured in port casks, this malt is a toast to the Scottish traders who braved the high seas and were instrumental in the foundation of the port wine trade. Port Ruighe, pronounced ‘Portree’ is the Gaelic spelling of the once-bustling trading port on Skye. The port finish combines Talisker’ s powerful maritime character with succulent sweet notes of rich berry fruits for a superb taste experience.

Was $120 – SAVE 30% – Now $83.99

Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or

This whisky was born from the memory of entering a pastry shop for the very first time. It’s about that first moment of finding your senses deliciously overwhelmed, breathing in the sweet scents and wishing you could take a bite of every creamy, flaky treat you see. In Nectar D’Or you can taste it all. To create it, we take the delicate, fruity spirit of our giraffe-high stills and age it in American oak bourbon casks along with casks that once held Sauternes sweet white wine.

Was $102 – SAVE 25% – Now $76.49

SMOS Caol Ila 8 Year KWM Cask

This may only be 15% off, but it has been one of the most popular whiskies over the first few days of the sale. That might be because this 8 year old sherry cask matured Caol Ila is already such a good deal, at just $85. It is big and bold but also balanced for a young malt tipping the scales at well over 60%. Lots of layers given its youth, with the sherry notes building over time to tame the brash young peat and smoke.

Selected by and bottled exclusively for KWM, this 2011 Sherry Butt (Cask 300161) of Caol Ila was bottled after 8 years at a cask strength of 61.2%.

Was $85 – SAVE 15% – Now $72.24
