BONHAMS ANNOUNCES DIEGO LANZA AS WHISKY SPECIALIST IN LONDON

Bonhams has announced the appointment of Diego Lanza as its whisky specialist in London. Diego joins an established and successful team of international whisky specialists – Martin Green in Edinburgh and Daniel Lam in Hong Kong – reporting to Bonhams International Director of Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky, Richard Harvey. He takes up his new position on 11 August.

Diego, who is fluent in English and Italian, will be responsible for sourcing whisky from the UK and Europe to be sold in Bonhams whisky sales in Edinburgh, Hong Kong and Paris. He joins Bonhams from The Whisky Exchange where he was the Old and Rare Spirits Manager, advising leading spirits auctions across the UK, USA and Hong Kong; curating The Whisky Exchange’s extensive private collection; working with private clients to develop their offerings – including a single cask bottling project for the Davidoff of London 40^th Anniversary and hosting the Whisky Exchange’s Old and Rare Whisky Show.

Our international whisky team has enjoyed great success over recent years setting world records and establishing the market for Japanese whisky. ·     Most in-stock Wine is at least 15% off with savings of up to 35%. Excludes some new arrivals.

LET US GIVE YOU A FLAVOUR

Canvas is a whisky drawn in bold colours, crafted around an experimental parcel of whisky from the Tomatin Distillery, re-racked for three years into casks seasoned with Vino Naranja. This fortified Spanish wine from the Condado de Huelva region creates a ripe fruitiness with oily, honeyed oak notes, while single malts aged in American oak bring further generous flavours of custard, honey and frangipane. It’s both a journey on the palate and an exploration of artistic design.

WHAT WILL YOU CREATE?

Whisky is our canvas. It’s how our whiskymakers explore their creativity. So with this new limited edition, we wanted to inspire that same spark in those who drink it. On the label is an ornate frame that tells the story of whiskymaking, and we’d love you to fill it. With an illustration, photograph, poetry – anything you like. Then show us what you come up with. All the information can be found on our website and who knows, what you design could even be the genesis of a new Compass Box blend.

Friday the 13th might just be our lucky day! That’s when our government will give us an update and announce which restrictions will be lifted and which will remain. We are still confident we can have a safe and relaxed Maltstock this September.

With everyone either fully vaccinated or tested just before Maltstock, there should be no reason why we shouldn’t be able to come together, safe and relaxed. Of course we will keep you updated! In the meantime we have some very relaxed news for you!

The Single Cask Gathering area

The very relaxed people of The Single Cask are coming to Maltstock in full strength! With Wei De from Singapore, Teo from Greece and Michael and the Butcher (Mikolaj) from Poland they will bring fun, passion and relaxedness to Maltstock. Oh, and of course lot’s of the very good The Single Cask bottlings!

They will be hosting tastings on the Friday and a couple of “Drinks with…” sessions on the Saturday. They will also be present at the gathering area which is now renamed as “The Single Cask Gathering Arrea”. If they feel like it they might also be making some relaxed whisky cocktails for you.

Scotch & Tattoos Midnight Café

Scotch & Tattoos is a brand under which Torsten bottles some very relaxed whiskies. If you have ever met Torsten you will understand the name. Having been to Maltstock before he was really hoping to be able to join us again this year. Unfortunately, he can’t. Well not in person. But will definitely be there in spirit every evening at the Scotch & Tattoos Midnight Café! Relaxed whisky and a bit of dancing.

Scottish breakfast by the Hielander

Brexit, Covid-19, they can try, but nothing stops Wullie and his relaxed team from the Hielander restaurant in Alkmaar. They have put in maximum effort and made sure they are able to source only the best for you. So both mornings everyone at Maltstock will get to enjoy a proper Scottish breakfast and a smile from Wullie. The best start of the day!

We love his breakfast. But you should really try the food at his restaurant! A good excuse for a nice break to the lovely city of Alkmaar.

Carn Mor Glentauchers 11 Year Old

Missed from the recent batch release, a first fill sherry butt from Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers at their signature 47.5% Strictly Limited label. Glentauchers 11 Year Old 2010vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Matured in first fill sherry butts bottled 2021 by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers for the Strictly Limited series. 1,690 bottles. Fully matured for 12 years in first fill sherry butts this Sherry Bomb is rich and spicy with dusty wood and leather notes.

The Glentauchers Distillery Company, comprising W.P. Lowrie a Glasgow based whisky blender and James Buchanan a London based blender, commenced construction of Glentauchers Distillery in 1897 with distillation commencing the following year. Equipped with six stills Glentauchers Distillery is a Speyside malt whisky distillery to be found at Mulben in Banffshire. Since production is designed primarily to generate spirit for blends of scotch official releases of Glentauchers single malt whisky are sparse. Notwithstanding, Signatory Vintage, Gordon & MacPhail and Morrison & MacKay produce some excellent independent bottlings.

A 2013 Bunnahabhain Staoisha single malt from independent bottler Signatory Vintage, matured in a pair of casks for seven years, before being bottled in June 2021 as part of its Un-Chillfiltered Collection. Really impressed with this Islay non-chill filtered Signatory offering. Shows maturity beyond its years and has a lovely peaty and maritime palate. If you like Islay malts then the peat is up there, which is normally reserved for the Lagavulin/Ardbeg/Laphroaigs on the island. Complimented with lovely salty smooth finish. Dailuaine 16 Year Old

Given that 98% of the liquid from Dailuaine contributes to blends such as Johnnie Walker, it is no wonder that this one is a wee bit of a hidden gem; adored and kept quiet by those that get familiar with it. A 16-year-old single malt at 43% abv for under 50 quid? Sounds good to me!
