Loch Fyne Whiskies ‘Orkney barley, Islay whisky – Bruichladdich’s latest Bere Barley!’ – Scotch Whisky News

The latest Bere Barley magic from Bruichladdich!

Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2011

Bere barley is Britains oldest strain of cultivated cereal and would have been the grain used by Scotland’s earliest distillers. A tough nut to crack, Bruichladdich have taken it upon themselves to get this grain back in production – it’s hardiness even broke their mill upon first use!

Grown in Orkney, the low yield, short season crop needs a lot of daylight yet provides a spirit bursting with fruit character – apple, pear and peach over cinder toffee and apricot jam. Doesn’t this sound delish? Un-peated, aged 10 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, 50% abv, natural colour and free from chill filtration. Ideal! Take a step back in farming and distillation history.
