Glen Moray Warehouse 1 2005 Tokaji Finish

Following on from the 2020 inaugural Warehouse 1 release, this Tokaji Finish from Glen Moray is the first of three releases scheduled for 2021. The first expression is a spectacularly sweet bottling of five casks of Glen Moray distilled in 2005 and matured for over 15 years, first in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in casks having previously held Hungarian Tokaji Wine. It’s been bottled at a cask strength of 53.6% abv without chill filtration or added colouring.

The nose is sweet with sugared almonds, caramel toffees and freshly baked gingerbread. On the palate, these flavours mingle with malt and maple syrup to create a whisky befitting of a Tokaji cask selection. Divine!

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 392: Springbank 23 Year Old 1996 Private Bottling – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 392: Springbank 23 Year Old 1996 Private Bottling

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries an outstanding Springbank. He was fortunate to try this Private Bottling a few weeks ago in a fabulous tasting with Michiel Wigman and Jeroen Koetsier. So once it became available to the public, Mark hurried to secure a bottle. Brace yourself, for it’s a belter as the logo – reminiscent of the son of Krypton – suggests. ‘Nuff said.

Wolfburn Langskip Scoops Top Honours – Scotch Whisky News

Wolfburn Langskip Scoops Top Honours

Wolfburn’s Langskip single malt whisky has won top honours at The Spirits Business Awards, being awarded a Gold Medal in the highly prestigious Scotch Whisky Masters competition.

‘Langskip has previously won several international awards,’ says Mark Westmorland, Global Brand Ambassador. ‘But this one is especially pleasing as it’s our first UK gold medal, and doubly impressive coming from the Scotch Whisky Masters. We’re chuffed to bits.’

Langskip is Wolfburn’s flagship single malt whisky, being matured for six years in top-quality bourbon barrels and bottled at a premium 58% ABV, to ensure a huge depth of flavour.  ‘Whisky fans globally have been enjoying it since launch three years ago,’ comments Mark. ‘It’s a consistently strong seller and benefits from being almost cask strength. Hopefully this latest award helps get it into the hands of some new fans!’

ABOUT LANGSKIP:

Wolfburn’s strongest expression takes its name from the Norse word for longship – the Viking vessels that once dominated the Caithness coast. Sleek, smooth, purposeful and strong, the legacy of these ships surrounds the Wolfburn distillery – in addition to settlements and burial sites, Wolfburn’s home town of Thurso was named by the Vikings in honour of the god Thor.  This beautifully rounded single malt is the result of long fermentation and gentle distillation, followed by maturation in first-fill bourbon casks, which are laid down for six years in our purpose-built warehouses. Its smoothness is matched only by its strength.

ABOUT WOLFBURN:

The original Wolfburn Distillery was founded just to the west of Thurso by William Smith in 1821.  In its day it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing, according to HMRC records, 28,056 “gallons of proof spirit” in a single year.  Taking its name from the stream that provided the water – the Wolf Burn – the distillery operated until around 1870.  The reasons for its closure are lost in time, but by 1877 the newly produced Ordnance Survey maps showed it being in ruins.

In 2011 plans were laid to resurrect the old distillery. Construction began in 2012 and in January 2013 the new Wolfburn Distillery commenced production, thereby becoming the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland.  Situated 300m from the site of the original distillery, the new Wolfburn operates in much the same way as the old: craftsmen use traditional methods to produce fine spirit, which is laid down in best quality oak casks to await the day when it is bottled as single malt scotch whisky.  Wolfburn’s single malt scotch whiskies are now available in 31 countries globally.

Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey Wants to Celebrate the Everyday Milestones – American Whiskey News

Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey Wants to Celebrate the Everyday Milestones

Gentleman Jack Double-Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey has launched “Milestones,” the brand’s first spot in the global “Make it Count” campaign for the Jack Daniel’s brand family. The super-premium whiskey’s campaign encourages consumers to mark the special moments with the people who matter most. Although we often think of only honoring the big moments, like a graduation, they contend that the smaller ones, like finally beating your dad in chess, are also worth commemorating. The campaign is brought to life through multiple executions on TV, social, and online video and will run in markets including the US, UK, Australia and Germany.

The new Gentleman Jack campaign is by creative agency Energy BBDO (Chicago). The :30 spot is part of Jack Daniel’s “Make It Count” campaign which encourages consumers to live boldly, just as Jack Daniel did himself. You can watch the :30 “Milestones” spot here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saUUZnzujRw

“Since 1987 Gentleman Jack’s double-mellowed whiskey has been perfectly fitting for celebrating life’s special occasions,” said Mark Grindstaff, Group Brand Director Jack Daniel’s Super-Premium Brands. “For this spot we wanted to carry on that tradition but also call attention to the smaller moments in our lives that are equally worth celebrating.”

The inspiration for the campaign came from how Gentleman Jack has been consumed in the past – as a super-premium, double mellowed whiskey it has historically been used to celebrate special occasions. For this spot the brand wanted to carry on the tradition but give it a twist, calling attention to all of the quieter moments in our lives that are equally worth celebrating.

“The father daughter chess scene was easily the most fun to watch play out during filming,” said Lucas Owens, Creative Director at Energy BBDO. “Since the majority of us had seen Queen’s Gambit, we all seemed to feel like we were chess experts. We were wrong, but it was fun to pretend for a little while.”

“Milestones” was shot in Barcelona, Spain, following all social distancing protocols. The director, Ian Pons Jewell, and production company, Reset, worked previously with Jack Daniel’s and Energy BBDO to create “First Timers.” Their continued collaboration made the “Milestones” shoot incredibly smooth, just like Gentleman Jack. Jack Daniel’s ““First Timers” premiered in September 2020, launching the global “Make It Count” platform.

GIVE a GIFT which keeps on GIVING

Treat your father to a cask of whisky to celebrate Father’s Day 2021

Celebrate with a few drams now and invest in a few casks for future days to come

Finally we are being able to enjoy spending time with family and friends again, which means that this year we can celebrate Father’s Day by treating our fathers to something special! If you’re usually one of those people scrambling to buy your father a last minute few bottles of his favourite tipple, why not purchase him something which will provide him enjoyment for many years to come?

Scotch whisky is a symbol of British craftsmanship and tradition, of durability and reliability. The origin of whisky began over 1000 year ago when distillation made the migration from mainland Europe into Scotland and Ireland via traveling monks. The Scottish and Irish monasteries, lacking the vineyards and grapes of the continent, turned to fermenting grain mash, resulting in the first distillations of modern whisky.

Since this momentous time, the industry has progressed and grown in order to become Scotland’s largest export, with global exports of Scotch Whisky in 2020 totaling £3.8 billion. Whisky is now drunk throughout the world and is continually seeing enhanced consumption year on year, with growth observed in over 100 international markets in 2019. As demand increases, it gradually begins to outweigh supply. Whisky that is collectible is also in demand for consumers, so a substantial proportion of any limited edition bottling will swiftly become much more limited as much of it is consumed by dedicated whisky lovers. Whisky is bottled after a period of maturation in oak barrels. Legally, this is a minimum of 3 years, but in practice, most whiskies are matured for a minimum of 8 years in order for them to develop their character.

Distilleries will usually have a ‘house style’ represented by a mass-produced bottling of a relatively young malt (such as Glenmorangie’s popular 10 year old). But they will also have older whiskies maturing at the distillery, and they can also bottle older whiskies such as a 15 or 21 year old. They might also bottle the product of a particular cask of vintage whisky, or they might offer different expressions of the whisky such as a ‘port wood finish’ or ‘sherry wood finish’ which means that in addition to being aged in traditional Bourbon barrels, the whisky has been ‘finished’ with a period of additional ageing in a port or sherry barrel which can impart different flavours.

All of these different expressions have enabled whisky to develop into an appreciating asset which is of interest to investors – production is limited, and hence they are highly prized by collectors and consumers alike. Whiskies from some distilleries are much more collectible than others, so it is important to do due diligence on what will be desirable in the marketplace in a few years’ time when you seek to sell your whiskies on.

It therefore comes as no surprise that in the past few years, whisky sales have been hitting the ultimate highs which had previously only been achieved by other luxury commodities. In 2019 a single bottle of Macallan 1926 fetched £1.5 million; that same year, a cask of Macallan distilled in 1989 sold for £161,500 – a high price for a still maturing cask of Scotch. Although discovering such rare whisky is few and far between, it is imperative that investors have access to the world’s most renowned distilleries; something which Elite Wine & Whisky prides itself in.

Whether you decide to merely enjoy a tipple with your father on Father’s Day, or choose to educate yourself more about the prospects of investing in a few casks of whisky for future investment, one thing is for certain, there is never a dull moment when whisky is involved!
