Haig Club Scotch Whisky launches new UK e-commerce website

New direct to consumer offering launches on 28th September at haigclub.com

Scotch whisky brand Haig Club has announced the launch of a new direct to consumer website, strengthening its e-commerce offering. The brand, which is a partnership between Diageo and Global Brand Partner David Beckham, announced the platform as a one-stop-shop which brings consumers everything they need to enjoy Haig Club. The site will feature hero products: Haig Club Deluxe, Haig Club Clubman and recently introduced ready to drink cans.

Haig Club is committed to understanding how people discover and buy whisky and believe that e-commerce platforms offer an excellent opportunity for growth and a route to make the whisky category more accessible to new audiences. The website is an exciting direction for both the brand, the category and partner David Beckham, who will be using the power of his social network to support sales.

The announcement of Haig Club’s dedicated e-commerce site comes as changes in shopping behaviour and increased awareness of ecommerce as a result of Covid-19 have rapidly accelerated the growth of online shopping for spirits. The UK has cemented itself as one of the largest e-commerce markets in Europe, with 87% of the population purchasing online in 20191. The UK’s online spending is set to account for 19% of all retail spend by the end of the year, making it worth over €225billion2.

Demonstrating the brand ethos of ‘making your own rules’, this launch is a sign of things to come from Haig Club, as it seeks to build out its online offering with a selection of products that showcase the versatility of the brand including unique collaborations.

“This is an exciting new development to allow our consumers to experience the world of Haig Club like never before. In a year where we have all spent more time at home, it’s been important to innovate and offer new ways for people to try our products.”

David BeckhamGlobal Brand Partner, Haig Club

“Online shopping for spirits has been growing fast, with Covid-19 accelerating change in shopping habits and e-commerce growing as a result. This growth coupled with David’s social influence as the most followed British celebrity on Instagram, provides Haig Club with a unique path to drive trial and consideration amongst digitally savvy consumers. We want to make it easier than ever for adults to discover, explore, purchase and enjoy Haig Club responsibly – so we’re very excited about our new e-commerce site and the opportunity that lies ahead.”

New Exclusive Whiskies at The Whisky Exchange – Whisky News

If you were wondering when we were going to release a brace of delicious whiskies that would struggle to be more seasonally-appropriate even if they tried really hard, then you’re in luck – we’ve done it.

First up, join us in wishing a warm welcome to a 30-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey from the folks over at Redbreast. This impressive dram has spent 24 years of its maturation in a single ex-port cask, enriching Redbreast’s already notoriously-fruity character, awash with dried mango and gummi bears, with floods of dark berries and powerful spices, all offset by a touch of dark espresso and airy vanilla, and supported by a punchy 57.2% ABV.

As if that wasn’t enough, we also have a 16-year-old Highland Park matured in a single, first-fill ex-sherry butt, blending the distillery’s trademark heather sweetness and subtly-smoky notes with an abundance of autumnal wood char and layers of sweet, dark fruit.

And don’t let these two monopolise all of your attention – our ever-growing selection of exclusives includes an Irish post still whisky from Green Spot finished in Marsala casks as well as sherried Glendronachs, Longmorns, Glenlivets and more.

Drams from Darkness at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Double Gold Dram from Darkness!

This 8-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from Darkness has been matured initially in ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished in custom-made Oloroso sherry octave casks for at least three months. Smaller sherry casks allow for a vastly increased surface area to volume ratio compared to larger sherry butts, leading to a greater cask influence that provides more concentrated and vibrant sherry notes that we’ve come to love.

SWEET & SAVOURY: TOMATIN LAUNCH 2006 FINO UK EXCLUSIVE – Scotch Whisky News

SWEET & SAVOURY: TOMATIN LAUNCH 2006 FINO UK EXCLUSIVE

Tomatin, the award-winning Highland distillery, has today announced the release of a limited-edition 2006 Fino expression, launching exclusively to the UK market.

The 2006 Fino expression was initially matured for 13 years at Tomatin Distillery on the 10th November 2006, and moved to the finest Spanish Fino Sherry butts on 12th November 2015.

Fino’s bright flor and nutty flavours, along with Tomatin’s malty backbone and fresh fruits are in perfect harmony. The whisky has notes of baked apple and almond cake, toffee sauce and lemon, followed by the more savoury flavours of freshly baked sourdough, olive oil and baking spice, which results in a silky yet fresh finish. Non-chill filtered and natural colour, the limited run has produced just 1,691 70cl bottles (46% abv) of this 13-year-old whisky, and will be available online and from specialist retailers across the UK from today.

Graham Eunson, Master Distiller at Tomatin, said: “We strive to produce remarkable expressions that appeal to not only our existing customers, but to a wider audience too. The 2006 Fino is a great example of our dedication to craft and excellence. The combination of both sweet and savoury notes gives a finish like no other, and we hope it will entice both whisky enthusiasts and novices to try this new edition.”

Tomatin’s ability to experiment with creatively finished expressions comes from the distillery’s exceptional wood policy, which ensures there is a wide range of casks sourced from prestigious partners within the industry.

To align with the 2006 Fino launch and to celebrate Graham Eunson’s 30th year in the industry, Tomatin Single Malt will be hosting a live tasting session on Friday 16th October at 7:30pm, on the Tomatin YouTube channel. A competition will also be running on the Tomatin social channels for viewers to be in for a chance of winning a tasting kit so that they can join in with the tasting event.

The limited edition 2006 Fino expression is available to purchase from select specialist retailers across the UK from 1st October, for further information please visit: http://www.tomatin.com/2006-fino-uk-exclusive

Notes:

Tomatin Distillery has been producing and blending malt Scotch whisky since 1897. Over the last 50 years, the distillery has borne witness to vast change. At its peak in the 1970s, Tomatin was the largest distillery in the world operating 23 stills and producing 12 million litres of alcohol every year. Over the last decade, significant time has been invested in rediscovering the distillery, people and values, and in refining the business model to move away from the formerly lucrative bulk commodity market to now focus on Tomatin’s core range of single malts.

Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands (near Inverness) and is famous for its portfolio of soft and mellow whiskies, including a core range, a limited-edition range and a premium archive range (prices range from £35 – £10,000). In the last ten years, Tomatin has secured over 60 prestigious awards in a variety of categories, and in 2019 the distillery celebrated its most successful year ever at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition, securing seven Double Gold awards and four Gold awards.

Van Winkle Bourbon 2020 Annual Release Coming Soon – American Whiskey News

Van Winkle Bourbon 2020 Annual Release Coming Soon

More Rye this year, Less 20 and 23-Year-Old Bourbon than Usual

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Oct. 6, 2020) – Fans of the highly anticipated Van Winkle line of bourbons will be excited to learn the annual release is coming soon. Yields from the barrels are typically low due to the evaporation during the long aging cycle, and this year is no exception.   While the amount of 10, 12 and 15-year bourbon will be about the same as previous years, unfortunately the 20 and 23-year-old barrels yielded far fewer bottles this fall.  Good news is there is more 13-year rye than in years’ past.

Known for their smoother and sweeter flavor due to the wheat recipe versus the traditional rye recipe found in most bourbons, Van Winkle bourbons are able to be aged longer than most, in some cases two decades or more, resulting in a superior sweeter and smoother flavor. The Van Winkle line has accrued an impeccable reputation among connoisseurs and has almost achieved cult-like status.  Although bourbon has become increasingly popular worldwide in recent years, very little Van Winkle is sold overseas, so that these coveted bottles are available in the United States.

The Van Winkle collection consists of several whiskeys. Suggested retail prices are as follows:

  • $69.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10 Year Old 107 proof
  • $79.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12 Year Old
  • $119.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year Old
  • $119.99 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 15 Year Old
  • $199.99 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 20 Year Old
  • $299.99 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 23 Year Old

“Unfortunately even though we suggest what we believe to be a very low and fair MSRP, we cannot control the price retailers charge, and some retailers mark it up even though we and the distributors that those retailers buy from ask them not to,” said Julian Van Winkle, president, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. “We are committed to releasing quality whiskey at a reasonable cost and we hope retailers will honor what we suggest as a fair retail price.”

Upon release of the Van Winkle bourbon this fall, Buffalo Trace Distillery reminds fans to be wary of online resellers such as private Facebook groups, Craigslist and other online marketplaces. “Trading and selling bourbon online is an unlicensed and illegal sale.  If you are not a licensed retailer selling Van Winkle products, we are prepared to take action to curtail the activity,” says Kris Comstock, senior marketing director at Buffalo Trace Distillery.  “Additionally, if you are a customer trying to buy a bottle at a licensed retailer who has marked it up above MSRP, we encourage you to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or contact your state Attorneys General office.”

The Van Winkle line of whiskeys has won a multitude of awards through the years, including the 20-year-old receiving a double gold medal, best bourbon, best small batch bourbon at the 2018 New York International Spirits Competition and the 15-year-old nabbing a Gold Medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Van Winkle Whiskeys will be available starting in November, but please be mindful that supply is quite limited and bottles shall be hard to find in stores, bars and restaurants. They will be packed three bottles per case.

About Van Winkle Bourbon

The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery has a four-generation history. The Van Winkle family’s involvement in the bourbon industry began in the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. He was a traveling salesman for the W.L. Weller and Sons wholesale house in Louisville. Pappy and a friend, Alex Farnsley, eventually bought the wholesale house and also partnered with Mr. A. Ph. Stitzel on the purchase of Mr. Stitzel’s distillery.  The three of them merged the two companies and became the Stitzel-Weller Distillery.

In May of 1935 at the age of 61, Pappy opened the newly completed Stitzel-Weller Distillery in South Louisville. Its prominent brands were W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still.  Pappy had a heavy influence on the operations there until his death at the age of 91. His son, Julian, Jr. took over operations until he was forced by stockholders to sell the distillery in 1972. The rights to all of their brands were sold to Norton Simon, Inc. Later, United Distillers, who eventually ended up with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, sold off all of the original labels around 1999.
After selling the distillery, Julian Jr. resurrected a pre-Prohibition label, the only one to which the Van Winkles kept the rights, called Old Rip Van Winkle. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to supply his brand. Julian Jr.’s son, Julian, III took over in 1981 when Julian, Jr. passed away. Julian III has continued with the Van Winkle tradition of producing high-quality wheated bourbon. His son, Preston, joined the company in 2001 and the Van Winkles look to continue that tradition for generations to come.
In 2002 the Van Winkles entered into a joint venture with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, Frankfort, Ky. All of the Van Winkle’s whiskey production now takes place at Buffalo Trace Distillery under the same strict guidelines the family has always followed.
