– It’s World Wetlands Day –
At Glengoyne, we’re very proud of the positive impact being generated by our wetlands, a project we have invested more than £245,000 in to date. We’ve been working with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), which conserves, restores and creates wetlands. Why are they so important? It’s because as well as providing a home for plants, invertebrates, birds and other wildlife, wetlands are extremely energy efficient. They cover less than five percent of the world’s surface, but lock away around a third of its terrestrial carbon.
We were the first distillery in Scotland to trial using wetlands to treat our spent lees – the liquid we don’t need after distillation. Instead of sending the lees to an industrial treatment plant, we treat it on site by having it make its way through a series of twelve pools – each thick with reed beds. This slows the flow and removes anything that would harm our local burn’s delicate balance before it makes its way into Loch Lomond.
Because gravity is used, we only need a 1.5KW pump to send the spent lees on their way. The process has cut our waste by around 25%, meaning around 21 transports a week from the distillery are no longer required.
Far more satisfying though was to hear the results of a recent site survey, which recorded a dozen species of birds on the site, including House Martins, Grey Herons, Moorhens, Sedge Warblers, Reed Bunting and Pied and Grey Wagtails! Not only that, but from an initial planting of 22 different species, a further 65 species of plant have now colonised the area, including marginal ones such as Skullcap and Water Figwort.
So here’s to making whisky the right way; in harmony with nature.
Sláinte!

The third Cask 88 Online Cask Auction, ‘Against the Grain’ will open on Friday 31 January 12 noon GMT, and end 10 days later on Sunday 9 February 5pm GMT. When the platform launched in June 2019, it was the first and only online platform dedicated to auction of whisky casks. You can view the details here
Scottish whisky broker and award winning independent bottler Cask 88 have announced their third auction, bidding for which opens at the end of the month. When the platform launched in June 2019, it was the first and only online platform dedicated to auction of whisky casks. The third Cask 88 Online Cask Auction, ‘Against the Grain’ will open on Friday 31 January 12 noon GMT and end 10 days later on Sunday 9 February 5pm GMT. Seven lots are featured, representing a range of diverse spirit and cask types, including two casks of grain whisky, two casks of new make spirit from Isle of Arran distillery and malt whiskies maturing in ex-Bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-rum casks. The oldest whisky in the collection is a 45 year old grain whisky cask from Invergordon distillery. All the liquid is distilled and stored in Scotland.
“Our third cask selection showcases the diversity of the whisky cask market,” said Head of Content Sam Laing. “Whisky enthusiasts are not limited by what the major producers choose to bottle and put to market. Whether they love well-matured grain whisky, malts with an uncommon cask finish, or they simply want to observe a delicious new spirit as it matures and develops over time, cask ownership gives them the opportunity to find something unique, and then to put their own stamp on it.”
“We’ve had a great response so far to our cask auctions,” said Cask 88 Director, Patrick Costello. “Our public platform offers full transparency, and an innovative way for our clients to engage with the whisky cask market. It has even given a boost to our traditional sales, as auction visitors, curious to learn more, approach us for our weekly cask list. We look forward to welcoming more sellers and buyers to the platform in the coming months and years.”
The Cask 88 Online Cask Auction platform only lists casks from private individuals, with careful consultation with the seller. Lots are always publicly visible on the Cask 88 website, and each cask undergoes a verification process to confirm ownership and provenance before going online. All casks over three years of age must have been regauged within the last 18 months to be considered for the auction. A sample from each cask is reviewed by the Cask 88 in-house team, who, among them, have sat on tasting panels for, and advised, top names in whisky, such as the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the Waldorf Astoria, the Peninsula Shanghai and The Scotch Whisky Experience.
Potential bidders will need to register before they can view active auctions and receive authorisation to bid. The final hammer price includes the cost of the cask and the first two years of storage. All other costs related to storage, removal from bond, insurance, regauging, sample withdrawal, transportation and bottling will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. This includes VAT and any UK excise duty. A buyer’s commission of 10% is added to the hammer price of all lots. Cask 88 accepts payment via bank transfer/BACS and all major credit and debit cards.
Once they have made their purchase, buyers will be eligible for the same level of service as provided to all clients of Cask 88. Casks are stored in a bonded warehouse in Scotland, and after purchase, clients are welcome to visit their cask and to have samples delivered to them. If they choose to bottle the cask down the line, Cask 88 offers packaging and labelling design services and supports clients throughout bottling and export of the final product.
