New year drams, butties, chips and laughs

It was early new year, 2019 had no long disappeared into history, a new whisky year was with us. The food provided by my host (who had well disappeared) was good, it was a platter of “nibble food” to be taken as when needed and returned to. I was, I knew, in a bar. Wee sausages, cheese squares, odd bits of pie, for some reason salad, baby triangle sarnies and every now and then a plate of chips appeared. All liberally taken with various liquid refreshments. By 2am things were becoming a wee bit bleary, events unfolding in slow motion. Still standing (or flopped in some cases) were myself – just, Specky (he wore the strangest pair of goggles), Hamish one eye, Dagger (why he had a Skean Dhu nobody knew), Mary the Mouth, Billy the barman, Shameless Shona, the Crab (a fisherman), wee wonky Wilma and Danny the man. A group brought together by the drinks behind the bar, survivors until now.

There was a rumour of a party up the road, not for me, I was ready for bed, but a chat was goin on about who would go. As I dondered about looking for the boys room, I almost fell over Paddy the Piper, strewn along three seats half on half off, he had long given up. Out cold. As everyone knows, a piper gets free drinks when playing, Paddy played all bloody night! Returning from washin ma hands, the curled up triangle butties looked appealing, I bit into the now crusty salmon buttie with delight, one more dram and me fer bed. Smiling like the village eejit, I asked sober Billy for “a dram for the road”, I have known him a good few years, he said this was on the hoose and passed a wee Glencairn over. I think he had had a case of the hic cups when pouring it; it was almost to the brim. I looked at the dram, looked at Billy. He looked at the dram and looked at me. Both sets of eyebrows raised and I headed into it. Bootiful, a delicious 18 year old Glendronach, one of my favourites. It must have been an hour later some of this dram was still there, conversations had gone from football, politics, holidays, tourists to drinks. Many topics were joined and confused, we ended up almost arguing about a football playing politician who couldnee sing to save his life. By this time we had lost Danny the man and Mary the Mouth had fallen asleep, head on the bar. Shameless Shona was still trying it on with anyone awake, trying not to be conscious, I started slowly sliding from one end of the bar to the other, near to the door. My room was upstairs on the next floor, this was going to be difficult. Takin it slowly, I thought it better to go hands and knees, so as no to fall over. Getting to ma room was fine, but where was the key?

I woke up hours later with a mouth like a donkey’s hoof, needed some hot tea. As I was waiting on the kettle to boil I noticed a book on the bed – aye, I hadnee managed to sleep in the bed, just on it. Who had given me this? A book to love and read a hundred times “the fall of the house of Campbell”, someone last night knew me well. I spent most of what was left of the morning reading. Went doon for a bite to eat, then continued the book. A grand end to a grand evening in Speyside. More to follow.  No animals were injured in the telling of this tale, a few humans maybe? Glenmorangie forges a global conservation partnership to help save the giraffe 

— Whisky recognises the serious threat its symbol faces in the wild —

12 March 2020 Glenmorangie has long celebrated the giraffe as a symbol of its distillery. With its extraordinary height, the animal perfectly illustrates the stature of the single malt whisky’s towering stills. Today, the Highland Distillery demonstrates its commitment to this endangered animal by forging a global conservation partnership to help safeguard its future.

Glenmorangie’s affinity with the giraffe begins with its towering copper stills in which it creates its lighter spirit, with more space for taste and aroma. The tallest in Scotland, these stills have necks the same height as an adult male giraffe. But although the giraffe’s silhouette is known and loved at Glenmorangie, as it is across the world, few are aware of the threat it faces in the wild. Numbers have fallen by 30% in 30 years, with some types of giraffe now critically endangered. With the giraffe’s decline going largely unnoticed, a BBC/PBS documentary on the work of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) and its partners, narrated by Sir David Attenborough has warned of a “silent extinction”.

In a concerted effort to aid the giraffe, Glenmorangie is pioneering a three-year partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). This two-pronged approach will support efforts to protect giraffes in the wild in Africa and provide a habitat for the animal at Edinburgh Zoo, which will play a vital role in their conservation.

Under the partnership Glenmorangie will:

About the partnership:

Launched in January 2020, Glenmorangie’s partnership with RZSS and GCF will run until the end of 2022. By supporting the work of its partners, Glenmorangie will focus on the threatened Nubian (formerly known as Rothschild’s) giraffe. Once widespread across East Africa, just 3,000 of these giraffes survive in the wild, with more than 50% of these in Uganda. The largest population lives in the country’s Murchison Falls National Park. Glenmorangie’s support is twofold. It will:

  • Support the work of GCF in the following areas with investment for expert staff, vets and equipment, so they can:
    • Protect giraffes from habitat loss and poaching (illegal hunting);
    • Reintroduce giraffes back into their natural range in Uganda, focusing on areas where the Nubian giraffe has become locally extinct;
    • Tag giraffes with GPS satellite tracking devices so that their populations can be effectively monitored, and their movements better understood;
    • Train and build capacity of African conservationists in giraffe conservation and management.
  • Support the conservation work of RZSS so that it can:
    • Open a specially-designed giraffe habitat at Edinburgh Zoo in the summer of 2020;
    • Aid GCF’s conservation work with genetic research into new giraffe populations. Genetic research is vital for reintroduction programmes, helping to avoid in-breeding, and Edinburgh Zoo has one of the world’s only zoo-based genetics laboratories.

About Glenmorangie’s stills:

Glenmorangie distils its Highland single malt whisky in its copper stills, the tallest in Scotland, which are around the same height as an adult male giraffe. These stills take Glenmorangie’s whisky on a longer excursion, resulting in a lighter spirit with more ‘space’ for taste and aroma. Glenmorangie’s giraffe symbol can be seen in many places around the Highland Distillery – eagle-eyed visitors may even spot it in a stained glass window in the majestic still house.

The charity, based in Namibia, was founded in 2009 by Julian and Stephanie Fennessy, a husband and wife team. He has 20 years’ experience in species and habitat ecology, conservation and land management across Africa, with a particular focus on the giraffe. Double Cask Batch DC105

Our latest batch of Double Cask Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky is finally ready for release to our mailing list members.

Batch number DC105 is a marriage of portions of eight different casks, ranging in age from 10 to 14 years. As well as portions of American oak ex-Bourbon casks, this batch also contains a high proportion of ex-tawny casks and portions of two French oak casks previously used to mature Australian white wine for a complex, lively and fruit-driven character.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: Dried apple and ripe pear, custard with nutmeg on top and homemade apricot jam cooking on the stove. Vanilla bean, gingerbread, and a deep, floral toffee fill the nose, with notes of lemon verbena and mint offering brightness.

PALATE: Initially, a big wave of toffee and candied orange with lots of berry jam. Warm, ripe citrus flavours and a medley of dark, sweet notes like preserved plums, honey straight from the comb, burnt sugar and molasses with a huge, dreamy texture.

FINISH: Vanilla sponge with blackcurrant jam, liquorice, coriander seed and ginger. Lingering, ripe, tropical fruits like mango, who sits and watches the warm citrus notes sink into the sea like a sunset.

Tickets go on sale this coming Monday March 16 at 10am through Roy Thomson Hall’s box office, and the Spirit of Toronto website has been updated with the schedule for our 2020 Masterclass Series – there will be some difficult choices to make in our humble opinion!

For those of you attending the show for the first time, these are tutored tastings with limited seating presented by a variety of speakers on the lower level of Roy Thomson Hall.

Masterclass seats may be reserved when purchasing tickets for the show. Those opting for Early Bird admission will enjoy priority entry into the main tasting hall when their pre-show class is over.

Spoiled for choice…

The schedule for our 2020 Masterclass Series is now online and we’re happy with the variety it offers, be it something that appeals to seasoned connoisseurs, novice tasters or those simply looking for an adventure on the palate.

Kicking off our 2020 series is ‘Santé: The Spirit of France’, a relaxed, pre-show session that explores the craft and culture of drinking French through a curated selection of handcrafted spirits that explore grain and fruit. Joining us to host this one-of-a-kind tasting is none other than Regis Lemaitre, a long-time friend of Spirit of Toronto who will regale and delight with his unmitigated passion for all things distilled.

In keeping with this continental feel we are pleased to have the Italian Trade Commission presenting another set of pre-show aperitivos as they invite guests to discover the ‘Spirits of Italy’ and explore the building blocks of our most beloved cocktails.

Those of you looking for a deep dive into whisky won’t be disappointed and we’re pleased to be showcasing some of Scotland’s most esteemed distilleries courtesy of Balblair, Benromach, Glen Moray as well as a selection of single malts from the blending portfolio of the Johnnie Walker range. For those of you whose taste runs towards the Emerald Isle will be torn between exploring whiskeys from the world’s oldest distillery, Bushmills, versus the Hinch Distillery, one of Ireland’s many newcomers – decisions, decisions.

Closer to home Bearface will unpack the art of Canadian whisky blending with samples of their component whiskies, Forty Creek will take guests on a trip down memory lane, and we welcome the return of Dr. Don Livermore who will be presenting a few of his all-star favourites as well as a sneak preview of his 2020 releases. And speaking of releases, we are excited to be showcasing Canada’s newest single malt whisky courtesy of Dr. Graeme Macaloney and the Caledonian Distillery on Vancouver Island.

Staying Healthy

Please know that as we work towards this year’s show we maintain an on-going discussion with our venue, Roy Thomson Hall, with regards to the public health risk from COVID-19.

While Toronto Public Health has stated that the virus is not circulating locally at this time, Roy Thomson Hall monitors the situation on a daily basis and has taken a number of additional precautions to ensure the well-being of its staff and patrons, including a daily disinfection of the entire venue, and the installation of hand sanitizer stations and anti-bacterial wipes in all public and office areas.

BLACK GOLD 1989 BOWMORE SINGLE CASK SHERRY HOGSHEAD

Black Gold is one of the most exceptional single cask whiskies to have ever been released by Wemyss Malts. This unique cask, selected from the oldest distillery on Islay; Bowmore Distillery, has a deep rich colour of polished rosewood.

As one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, said to trace its distillation roots back to 1779, it keeps with its over 200 years of heritage by being one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries that still traditionally malts and kilns its own barley.

The once pungent local Islay peat aroma has evolved into complexity and subtlety thanks to the 30 years of maturation and has developed an earthy character like freshly kilned clay or walking into a old humidor.

Rich notes of burnt toffee, stewed dates and raisins coated in dark chocolate have developed due to the intense maturation in a sherry hogshead. The oak tannins, however are not overwhelming but instead they provide wood spice and the aroma of vintage leather.

The sherry and smoke combine to evoke flavours of sweet balsamic glazed bacon and the mouthfeel is thick, oily and heavy bodied.

Black Gold is single sherry hogshead cask of 1989 Bowmore that has matured for 30 years and been bottled at a cask strength of exactly 50.0%ABV.

In response to the call to stop the unnecessary movement of people and to slow the spread of Covid-19 we have taken the very hard decision to close The English Whisky Co. to visitors, including The Kitchen at St George’s from tonight (18th March).

This includes the cancellation of all upcoming events including Tasting Tours, Mothers Day Lunch, St George’s Dinner, and our annual Easter Egg Hunt.
